They said at about 2:35 "we used six witness cameras synced to the timecode of the 35mm camera" which sounds like they were used for reference for the VFX. It's not totally clear but that's what I took from that. I just saw the movie tonight and I was sure it was shot digitally until I saw Kodak Film in the credits. The movie is great, by the way.
