Hey Sage!

I love the LUTs!!!

I have the Ninja V and it even loads the full 65x versions ! ! ! !

In fact I'm considering realtime recording with LUT applied straight to your REC709 versions using the LUTs and even to the LogC variation he he

It would be a godsend to have files already in ProRes and in LogC ?

What do you think about the LUT processing inside the ATOMOS recorders? Have you tried one?

Is the internal interpolation/math for LUTs good? Is it tetrahedral?

I'm a math noob he he just asking to understand if the LUT algos inside the recorders would be of the same quality of Resolve...

I mean potentially it would be even better because occurring on an uncompressed signal and BEFORE compressing the signal to ProRes ! ! !

What do you think??

Thanks!!!!!

@dia3olik I haven't tried the Ninja. Yes, it would work on the hdmi signal, and with 65x, it takes interpolation concerns off the table (for 8 bit, every fourth value would be dictated for a given dimension).

That said, be sure to record a backup internally, should you need to go back to the VLog. It is key to have an accurate WB and moderate exposure for the EC variations (moreso than interpolation)

@Sage Why 8bit? Isn't the output 10bit? would this still apply?

To get 4k 60p 10bit out of the HDMI you have to disable internal recording...that's why I'm so invested in this he he

BTW I always set the WB when it changes with my white card so no worries here, I lean towards OCD a little so this helps too ?

The 8 bit example is just to demonstrate the density of 65x - it changes from every eighth value along a dimension to every fourth (eight times as dense)

As long as you're careful to WB and expose (and you'll have a live preview - a WYSIWYG approach), you'll be fine

@Sage, I have very little free time of lately and therefore little time to post, but your V3 is so nice I am astonished. In fact, I am so impressed that I was, for a short time, considering not trading the GH5 for P4K since the look you created there is amazing. But...

The P4K will be different though

...this means you will be creating your conversion for the P4K? Because, YES!!! If so, your conversion plus .braw will be so potent that I can't see needing much in an upgraded camera for some time. I am still so busy that I can wait for both .braw and your conversion.

Please please please keep us posted on the P4K progress.

Btw, I think this is a brilliant decision for you. Both the Gh5 and especially the P4k will be purchased by scores and scores of filmmakers. Your consumer base will be yuge.

Thanks again man. Great work.

Thanks Jonesy, that's the plan. There is a lot of ground to cover; I am laying the foundation for it now. Just got a new Alexa Classic last week, due to the early demise of the former

Before moving forward, I wanted to make sure the original work was fully defined, and V3 is really there

Great Product, Sage.

I'm about to to purchase it.

One question, for those of us who like shooting at 4000 K in daylight to get that toned down blue mood, what version of the lut should we apply? or does it have to be shot at daylight temp according to the manual to get the great fleshtones

Also, looking forward to the  P4K version. How far away are you? and are you waiting till they implement BRAW in it to mach on?

Keep up the great work

@RCV It does need to be a neutral WB for the key light. You can get the same monochromatic reduction following the conversion in post by desaturating and then doing a WB shift, or midtone wheel shift. The color conversion underneath will be true to form.

The P4K is still in the distance; if Black Magic would sell one to me, I could get started ? Alas, one day

I've been carrying around my little GX85 w/ Oly pancake zoom more often for casual photography, and the occasional impromptu video. Who needs a "Pocket 4K" when you can have a Pocket Alexa! ? But really, it fits in my pocket.

Bottom screen grab has GHAlex with some additional grading. It works miracles on this "hacked" Cine-D at like f/20.

@Sage What codecs are you using? At the moment I am using Atomos with DNxHD, and might switch to ProRes as it offers 10 bit recording for all of their offered codecs in Atomos. I was thinking of using ProRes LT, but not sure how aggressive you LUT actually is. Should I rather go with 422? Atoms has these options (HQ, 422, LT).

I would use HQ myself (which is still a touch soft). GHa v3 will be transparent to the material (no need to worry about teasing apart macroblocks etc)

do you mean soft VS uncompressed vid coming off the hdmi or VS the best quality option of DNX inside the Atomos?

Back a few years, there was a comparison of the various flavors of mezzanine codecs against raw, and they all softened the image. They had a filmic quality (inherently soft), and I quite liked it, though that's why I opt for at least 200mbps with a 2K intraframe codec

Hello everyone!

I'm been working in several projects lately, here i wanted to to show some still of a new short film i shot last week. The final look will be in black & white, but here i will put some stills in color with V3 and my grade. Also some Vlog stills.

Really stunning... just WOW!!! I’ve been a fan of your work since your Nikon days, I loved your short about the author (sorry can’t remember the name) I thought it looked so high end for a Nikon DSLR and once again you are not disappointing. I love seeing frame grabs from narrative shots... it really lets me see what these cameras are capable of. I can tell from the frames why you would want to go with B&W for this project, but with color that good, it makes for a difficult choice I’d imagine. Do you shoot in 4K or 1080p?

Also, what lens(es) are you using?

Thanks! Yeah the short you mentioned is called "Best-Seller", is now on some streaming services, also in youtube.

You are right, when watching this color, is very tempting to go for this look. But the B&W style was something i already decide in Pre-production. Is gonna take some time, I just made a first-cut, then come sound design, scoring and Mastering. But is looking neat!

I shoot in 4k, then down scale. Looks better and you can push it more in post.

Here i used a lot the Sigma 18-35, and then a 50mm Super takumar(super filmic!)
