Shooting 5K on the Panasonic GH5 with the new 'Open Gate' mode

Everyone with GH5 can test this HEVC by shooting some 6k photo files. It makes the same 200Mbs 10bit HEVC mp4 file than the new open gate mode. It is though 30P. When selecting 3:2 ratio the video has resolution 5184 x 3456. The new graphics cards for example NVIDIA 1060, 1070 etc should play HEVC files up to 8k. Can someone test it in practise.

By the way GH5 has power to play these HEVC files smoothly.

Can we monitor out recording in 5K? If so I s it 4:3? Can it output a 16:9 image out of the hdmi so there isn't all that wasted space on the monitor? Which makes me wonder, why isn't there a 5k 16:9 mode internally? Maybe you could mention that to the Panasonic reps as well.

Panasonic GH5 delivered...

V-Log on the way....

Only had a brief 5 minutes handling the camera - this thing feels incredible in the hand.

Threw on the Olympus 40-150mm 2.8 (which is also an incredible lens), IBIS is great at 150mm.

Looking forward to trying out all this groovy stuff on the way.....

The obvious and most logical would be the 5.2k 16:9 video mode. Is there some reasons Panasonic is not adding it to this FW? Why only anamorphic users get the high resolution mode?

And please Panasonic change that exposure value blocking thing. It would be no harm to anyone if the camera would show shutter speed, aperture and iso in all video modes.

Andrew, any chance you can inquire with Panasonic about implementing a full sensor width 10 bit time-lapse mode in HEVC?  It doesn't seem like it would be a very heavy lift for them to add considering the hard work has already been done on the encoding side of things.  It would also save a ton of storage space and time compared to shooting raw stills + image processing.  Thanks.

My company was debating purchasing the GH5 for sometime. Last month we finally folded and upgraded from to the GH5. We now use GH5's and the Sony A7S II for VistaVision 65mm type shots (or special low light situations). Haven't regretted the decision one bit. And now with news of this firmware update coming so soon, we're even more happy that we made the decision. Yes we'll still rent an ARRI or Red when needed, but I think our current setup will work quite well, especially for run and gun/quick interview setups. Thanks Panasonic. As a Canon fan, you're leaving them in the dust. The C Series is nice, but their DSLR's (which started all this) got left WAYYYY behind as a result of them pushing their cinema line.

Agreed, some sort of in-camera 16:9 crop of this high res mode would be very nice

Another good suggestion.

In the meantime it would be interesting to see how slow the shutter goes in open gate 5K H.265, because then you have timelapse in video mode already for long exposures, 1 frame per second stuff.

It's trivial to do in post, you just create a 16:9 timeline and put the clip on it. It's still 5K, and you have the added bonus of being able to shift the frame up and down to compose the shot better.

Also the crop marks for 16:9 assist with shooting it in the first place.

If you read the post you see it's not just for anamorphic users, you don't need an anamorphic lens and can instead shoot 16:9 with crop marks and crop in post really easily.
