Official Magic Lantern forum for Raw Video - http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?board=49.0

Updated for 2017 Magic Lantern camera capabilities at EOSHD - http://www.eoshd.com/2017/06/magic-lantern-raw-video-current-camera-capabilities-updated-2017/

Creating a sticky thread for this as it's one of my favourite topics. This thread is just to compliment and contribute to the main magic lantern site.

I am testing:

5D3
5D2
100D (beta / experimental build)
70D (beta / experimental build)
50D

Bitrate calculator:

http://rawcalculator.bitballoon.com/calculator_desktop

Following 70D progress is a priority for me as it's the only one with both Dual Pixel AF and articulated screen... 5D3 doesn't have that!

Main builds and ports in progress at Magic Lantern:

Experiments including 10bit/12bit raw and 4K raw crop mode:

My regards to all the Magic Lantern devs!!

Please test any slow motion possibilities with the 100D(SL1) and the 70D. To have a second camera that can shoot grab and go slow motion without having to change so many settings in the 5D3 would make life a whole lot easier.

Of course I'm unsure if any higher frame rates are even possible with the experimental builds on the 100D and 70D?

Haha ! Nice catch ! Do you think if we do the same for the 5DIII we will discover a CFast card reader ? :glasses:

Well i'm also a user of 5DII + 5DII and amazed to see how ML can unlock many features on Canon DSLR.

The 5DII was for me the first step in the world of raw video. Your thread is a nice idea, lot of people are scary about ML or think it's not for profesionnal use, but they're wrong. If you know at 100% how work your camera and ML, you can really discover an other side of your camera with a full control without any anxiety.

I recently shot a wedding with the 5DIII, in RAW 12bits at 1920x1080@30fps continu without any issue, for a total of 250GB ( 1x 64 komputerbay 1000X | 1 x 64gb lexar 1066X | 1 x 128gb lexar  1066x)

I directly edited all DNG (without any transfert on hardrive) open with MLVFS in Resolve and then export in DNXHD 10BITS.

MLVFS is for me the best tool for work in RAW with ML. It's fast, often updated and many options.

In order to compare to the theoretical values, you can use this tool. It is quite accurate :)

I'll add my results with the 50D asap.

BTW, the 50D is missing dual ISO recording and Digic IV cameras are missing 10-12bit recording. If someone has some knowledge to implement that, that would be perfect. The thread on magic lantern forums has plenty of information but lacks developers

I have a B&W shoot coming up, would using grey scale in live view give me any significant bump in write speed? Or would it just make my life more difficult monitoring my exposure. When I correct my footage, in post, I always drop Saturation all the way down and I find it really helps, would it have the same benefit while shooting?

i wonder is it possible to record raw video in anamorphic mode on the 5DIII, and I assume there is a desqueeze built in? Also I am a bit confused as to what the dynamic range is in raw mode. I have looked through their forums but I get lost easily on there

Are you absolutely 100% sure on the 10bit? Still have my 50D but I'll have to correct the post if that's true. http://www.eoshd.com/2017/06/magic-lantern-raw-video-current-camera-capabilities-updated-2017/

The other Digic IV cameras are 7D and 5D Mark II.

There is not builds available on magic lantern on the experiments pages :

59515c1585492_MagicLanternNightlyBuilds-GoogleChrome.jpg.d5aba11c31409b90da41007ca218cfd8.jpg

And there is no option on the latest nightly builds (in MLV_lite or MLV_rec modules)

There has been experiments in the past, but I am not aware of a working version for the 50D. (Can someone help us for the 5DmkII & 7D ?)

Edit : Lates experiments are here : http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5601.msg185344#msg185344 but you'll see they are not recording properly (every two frames is corrupted / repeated)

100D is missing from the experimental builds too, sometimes you have to look on the forum amongst the 1000's of posts for someone who has compiled his own build with 10bit in it.

See if you can find one for the 5D Mark II and 7D :)

In the mean time I've updated the article to say the DIGIC IV cameras don't do 10bit.

These are all compact flash so 10bit missing is no big deal... they can do 14bit just fine up to near the maximum of the sensor.

On Digic 4 cameras the 10bit/12bit raw mode is corrupted in full sensor mode, every other image is pink. reddeercity in ml forums is working hard to solve this problem with his 5D2. In crop mode all of the cameras are working in 10/12bit, they just need a little black level adjustment with exiftool (or maybe this is solved with the last MLV DUMP?)

The secret of the 5D3 4K is not just the 10/12 bit mode but the new lossless raw compression feature. It's possibile to use 14 bit raw mode with 54% compression rate which is more effective then the 10 bit mode alone. It can be combined with 12 bit to get even smaller file sizes (or higher continous resolutions). The strange thing is with 10 bit the compression is not that effective.

The downside: the live view is unusable right now if you use compression, and the recording could stop if the image information exceeds the card's max write rate. So the efficiency  of the compression level is flexible. 3,5K continous recording is possibile if you are using higher ISO values (lower dynamic range, less steps in the highlights, more compression possibile) with the 5D3 such as ISO800+

The MLVFS just updated few weeks ago to handle to compressed raw

The compression is an original canon feature and it could work with any camera from 5D2 through 600D but it's in the alpa stage in development right now.

Exactly, that’s what wanted to point out but Deadcode wrote it before me :) !  The most significant development and breakthrough  on 5D Mark III since April the 1st is not 10/12bit but lossless compression in camera similar to Blackmagic. It reduces the bit rate much more than 10/12 bit. And combined with 12bit it makes possible 3K continuous at 2:35 ratio. 12 bit looks better than 10 bit and is almost indistinguishable from 14 bit

With all due respect this piece of information is missing in the main article but there is plenty of info in  the  No Joke - RAW 4K on the 5D Mark III thread on this forum.
