12 or 10-bit RAW Magic Lantern!!!!

I have done some measurments of recording times with the newest build (with fine resolution settings)

Everything tested with 24fps 10bit on 5d3 113, CF sandisk extreme pro 128gb 160mb/s. 1320 is the maximum vertical resolution for 5d3 when recording raw video.

3168x1320 2.40:1 (1.81x crop) - 14 sec

3104x1320 2.35:1 (1.85x crop) - 18 sec
3104x1298 2.39:1 (1.85x crop) - 21 sec

3008x1280 2.35:1 (1.91x crop) - 38 sec
3008x1258 2.39:1 (1.91x crop) - 56 sec

2976x1266 2.35:1 (1.93x crop) - 60 sec
2976x1246 2.39:1 (1.93x crop) - 123 sec

2880x1226 2.35:1 (2x crop) - continous

And wider aspect ratios - just for fun:

3520x1320 2.67:1 (1,63x crop) - 6 sec
3296x1320 2.50:1 (1.74x crop) - 12 sec

Now I would like to see the comparison: 5d3 vs 5d4 - raw 10bit 3008x1258 (quite usable recording time - 56 sec) vs MJPEG 8bit 4k. Not so much different crops - 1.91x 5d3 vs 1.7x 5d4. Similar bitrates. That would be very interesting.

what is it fine resolution settings?

I tryed 12 bit and 10 bit on 7D but the files are 100% corrupted, I have load it from mlv lite 1.1 module. can you suggest me the default setting to make it work please?

I'm doing it in no-crop mode,  global drow off, tryed also to change ml preview options and nothing change.

which sofftware do you use to convert mlv into dng? I did a test with mlrawviewr (it doesn't open the files but the problem should be related to mlv lite), and mlv producer.

thx a lot

Fine resolution settings - i mean there is ability to change recording resolution in smaller steps, around 30 pixels or so.. Normally it was 2880 x something and next 3540 x something, now you can choose many options in between. So you had continous 2880 and than couple of seconds of 3540. Now it is very nice to adjust horizontal resolution precisely. I use 5d3 and it has no problems with pink artifacts, i dont know about 7d but i think it doesnt have fully working version yet. And i use old version of mlvfs on pc - the one with pismo, i just quick-mount mlvs and open them in resolve, no extracting.

I'd love to see some outdoor shots with this high resolution.

More good news (well, for certain shooters). A1ex is on the way to fixing the off-centre 5x zoom crop centering. If you weren't aware, in the "5x" grayscale preview crop mode (the one that allows you to bump up the resolution) the portion of the sensor that was being sampled was not exactly in the middle. And the more you'd increase resolution, the more off center it would become. This was a PITA for those who are trying to make precise geometric compositions in this mode as it was impossible to get a symmetrical planimetric framing, or for anyone who wanted to use an anamorphic in crop mode as you would start hitting the vignetting on one side.

It isn't in the nightly builds yet, but is on the way.

do you mean will be possible to shoot in crop mode having a colored preview with good refresh rate (fps)? because now to have precise framing the only solution is to use grayscale preview, this mode allow precise framing but kills fps refresh rate and is black and white.

thx

No, unfortunately. This mode is still not good for shooting styles that require any level of response in real time. However, I seem to recall that if you half press the shutter button (at least on the 5d3) you get a colour preview and slightly faster fps. This helps a bit but it's still tricky if you need to follow fast moving action.

Great, thank you for sharing :)

Last time I checked (17/11 nightly build) the 10 & 12 bit recording weren't working on the 50D but i'll try again as soon as there is another build.

Interesting the 5DS and 5DIV are on there. ML isn't :)

The 5DS actually shoots quite nice 1080p. It will be a contender if they end up porting ML RAW to it.

What apps are you guys using to convert compressed RAW 10bit MLV to DNG on a Mac?

I have searched for a few and only Mystic beta 0.5 works so far - but there are green focus pixels all over the frame on the 100D.

If you don't want to use MLVFS, Raw Magic works really well and can be bought through the App Store.

Raw Magic is great but it doesn't support the new 10bit / 12bit compressed RAW yet... At least my version didn't...?
