Please explain the advantages of shooting 4:3 with a 2x Ana

Hello all,

Like to say hello as I am a new member here.

My first post is explained in the title.

I have seen some suggestions that shooting 4:3 is best for 2.66:1 with a 2x Ana, because it does not waste pixels, compared with shooting 16:9 which 'wastes' a third of the horizontal for 2.35:1

I am puzzled by this since 1080p 4:3 format would be 1440 horizontal pixels, which is 480 less than 1920.

Seems like no matter which way, expect some losses.

If you are thinking of shooting in 4:3 mode with your GH2, just know that you'll be limited to 29.97fps instead of the cinema standard 23.98fps. I avoid it altogether.

If you can afford it, consider using a SmallHD to make shooting with your GH2 a little easier: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/1625-how-to-crop-2x-footage-to-15x-footage-on-a-smallhd-monitor/

In 4:3 mode you get MJPG codec and 30p. Of course is better to shoot avchd and 24p, but is good to have the chance to choose. My last work I decided to shoot in 4:3 with anamorphic. I experiment to try different settings to get the best on these mode and works fine to the look I wanted.

with the mjpeg anamorphic hack, you don't need to interpret footage in your nle to get the correct aspect ratio.

if i shoot avchd footage with my 2x anamorphic, i go to 'modify... > interpret footage > aspect ratio > conform to anamorphic 2:1 (2.0)' for every file to 'unsqueeze' the image. if i shoot in the mjpeg mode, i can use the files straight off the card, bypassing the interpreting footage step

1080p is a standard for hd video. 1920 (w) x 1080 (h) pixels, progressive frames (16:9 aspect ratio). it doesn't apply to a 4:3 aspect ratio. the gh2 isn't recording 'true' 1080p in 4:3 mjpeg mode.

what happens with a gh2 in the hacked mjpeg mode is that it takes advantage of the 4:3 image size of mjepg recording. the sensor is recording a 4:3 image, while the output file is a 1920 (w) x 720 (h) (2.66:1 aspect ratio). so with an anamorphic lens, this will unstretch the footage in the camera. at least that's the best i understand it, and i may not be explaining it very well...

read this article to see if it helps clear it up at all:

You still lose some resolution vs 16:9 1080p.You also get more noise.
