sanveer Posted October 12, 2012 Share Posted October 12, 2012 The picture quality on the GH3 seems to have seriously been improved (though the video quality, is suspect). Even though the framing is not identical in the picture comparison, between the Panny (GH3) and the Olympus (EM5), the GH3 seems to pack just a little more detail, than the Olympus. Also, the low light capabilities of the GH3, till ISO 6400, is phenomenal, and even 12800, isn't too bad. Did Oly ever reveal the read time of the sensor? The EOSHD review talked about super-fast read time and low rolling shutter, yet Panny reps say the read time of the GH3 is a "standard" 1/10th of a second. It was crowded, but I got ten minutes. I had read the manual online in advance. The RX-100 clips were not too bad, but my GH2-clips were. It was steamy in the shop, I hadn't put my grip on, I was too eager to see the Sony's recordings asf. Based on the clips of my hasty test, nobody would ever have chosen the GH2. Actually another thing that kills me are those 'first look' camera reviews that are basically just a hand holding the camera and a guys voice listing off the names of the buttons the most basic of features. "So, here we have the click wheel and over here is the menu button where you can access your various menu options." Really? You do realize there are press photos along with the press release right? Again, I just wanna say to them, "Stop right there! put that camera down. You are unqualified." Alright, Sorry guys. I'll stop talking about this now. I just had to get that off my chest. ;-) [/quote] That's hilarious. This is exactly my problem... Some D-bag points a Red Epic at a wall for 15 seconds and posts "NEW RED EPIC FOOTAGE!"... Two weeks after it comes out. The 30fps bit is another one.. He somehow manages to take cameras designed for cinema use, and makes them look as video as possible. Take an Epic, C300, F65, Alexa, etc, and put a some canon kit zoom lens on them and walk around sooting someone's back yard like a video camera at 30fps. I think it would be funny to see how bad you can get the footage to look. That way, when we see these crappy video looking clips we can always say to each other, "Well, remember how bad the those cameras looked that one time." :-D Hmmm I guess there is one problem though. Some of those cameras are really heavy and wouldn't exhibit as much shakiness as a little GH3. One of the pitfalls of using a small camera is that it's more susceptible to jitters while handheld. I have to say, these do not look impressive to me at all. There are some that look downright sub-par. Especially the "Firebread" food cart image. Take a look at the noise and mushy details in that one. Oh, and take a look at the alley shot with the hanging bicycle. Look at that weird salt and pepper noise all over the image... Now that I've really looked at the images and compared similar images to other cameras (the bookcase image, is in most of the camera reviews) I can see that it's obviously some kind of user error or a lens issue. The bookcase was shot at f8 there is no reason why is should be as soft and mushy as that. There are even some shots where there is simply no clear focal plane at all (look at shot #33 of the pipe coming out of the brick wall). Even comparing images to those of lesser cameras like the LX7, you can see all the shots seem soft and blurry. In the bookcase shot, look at the "Arizona Highways" book with the little image of the waterfall. Now go look at Sony RX100 review and see how they compare. I can't see how the GH3 could be this bad. jgharding Posted October 19, 2012 Share Posted October 19, 2012 I too wanted this camera to be good, I kind of wanted an excuse to try out M4/3, but so far it looks like it's a big ugly beast with ropy video quality, and possibly poor photos too. Probably poor menus as well, compared to Canon and Sony, unless very much redesigned from the previous model. Maybe I'll get an old GH2 instead. I've seen plenty of GH2 footage I liked now, but that promo film for GH3 and all the rest look a bit rough so far: dodgy colour (especially skintones), moire, just really "nothingy". It'd be nice to get someone to do some talking to camera using internal mics, to wear a fine-patterned shirt in a kind low key lit situation to test low light and moire. A second shot could be walking along in front of someone (back-stepping) in the street at night, it would give an idea of low light and dynamic range as well as jello and stability. It should be easy to get someone to stand in for those and shoot in a few minutes, if you're up for it. Just anything but still shots of waterfalls or grass or cats please :) Get some frame-filling faces, a bit of movement, the kind of thing you actually shoot in a film or music video etc. and we'll all love you forever :wub: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The GH3 doesn't have smooth/nature or cinema, it has 'Natural' though and you can adjust every seting - or + 5. I think a lot of people are looking at the Gh3 for its possible cinematic characteristics and if it is truly a step up from the GH2 image wise... We have nothing to base that on but "Genesis", and i've seen far better on a GH2. (I know it's early firmware.) Also if you can figure out the picture styles and if there is a possibility of getting an almost "log" style PP??? (That's huge for me... It's the only thing i like about the Canons.) Just a flat, log style test at 24p, 1/40 shutter (good motion blur..) with good stabilization... Especially if you have some old glass like some Canon Fd's or Nikon AIS's.
