do tripods really matter?

Axel, I agree about the sound and lens stuff... but don't forget that the GH2 is made in China :-) The rest of the world's businesses are happily exploiting the chinese ability to produce large amounts of very cheap products, and then we complain about how badly made they are... The chinese can make very cheap knockoffs themselves, but if you pay well, you can get really sofisticated products there too... It is very arrogant to assume that the chinese are incapable of producing original, highly sophisticated products... and there are produced a hell of a lot of shitty products in the US and Europe as well!

There you mix something up. Things are more complicated. A lot of products are made in China but invented elsewhere. Take an Apple computer. It's american. Chinese people just can't. Take precision clockworks, cars, tripods. Manfrotto has a reputation, their tripods are high tech products. Sachtler would be out of business quickly if they delivered something that's not up to the highest expectations. Every part, it may be plastic, carbon fibre or magnesium, is thoroughly tested. You can dissasemble it, make a equal-looking copy, but it will never work the same.

I think if you are working on the set of a movie or even a commercial then yes, you had better show up with a capable tripod. However, Craig is just starting and still needs to learn the basics of Photography. I don't think the $500 tripod is going to make or break his filmmaking career. Later on when his skill finally exceeds the capabilities of his equipment he can step up to a $500... hell, a $1,000 tripod. That's really my only point. I also think we all need to start out making some truly bad movies before we can even get to the truly amazing visions we have. God knows I've already made some crapy videos recently but It's part of growing right?

Alright, the exception proves the rule. The chinese even fake their own food for the foreigners. I am not arrogant, I have chinese friends, but they think the same. I buy chinese products. There is a wise saying: cheap, fast, good, pick any two.

Superb:-

heavy yes. sturdy yes. rugged yes - but you have to replace the rivets with m3 bolts after about 6months of heavy use - £5 maximum for the bolts and anti vibration nuts required.

also, the fluidity improves over time. straight out of the box it is not as smooth as you'd like. but after a few uses its beautiful. best value £125 I have spent.

yes:). I think the one I went for last year is a copy of the fancier. very good value. the head is good once warmed in. mid spreader is good for all round use. if most of your stuff is done in a nice clean studio then ground spreader. but mid level is adequate imo. if i need the extra rigidity I opt for a lower level shot.

just be warned to purchase 10 or so nuts and bolts (m3), 25mm long bolts. nuts need nylon 'anti vibration' part. just replace the weak rivet parts which attach the spreader to the legs. 2 minute easy job to replace.

The fancier probably has a nicer power coating then the copy. parts on mine are not as thickly coated as Id have liked but I'm happy overall. ps. you can order spare quick release plates for about £5-10. Order a few when you purchase - surprising how easy it is to remove and leave somewhere
