dtr Posted January 14, 2012 Share Posted January 14, 2012 Hello forum, I came across EOSHD in my search for a still+video camera and figured this would be a good place to drop my question. I'm looking for a camera for documenting my media art projects (end result and development process). I make audiovisual performances and installations, in a 'black box' most of the time. I'm searching for a cam that will perform well in dark environments and will catch the subtleties of the light installations. My current project is especially demanding on the recording equipment. The visual part is all about light projections in the fog of a hazer (smoke machine). Some of the footage at the bottom is shot with a DSLR and shows it much better (although it was done very quick and dirty, little attention payed to setting up optimally). So I'd like to ask for the advice of the readers of this site. What camera would be suitable for this kind of work? My budget is €1000 max. Preferably less. Quality and useability of video is more important than stills. I've read lots of good things about the GH2 and from what I deduce the 14mm F2.5 ASPH pancake lens would be a useful addition for low light work. Though I'm a newcomer to DSLR and lens systems so I might be wrong. Are there other options I should look at? Administrators Andrew Reid Posted January 14, 2012 Administrators Share Posted January 14, 2012 The GH2 is good when you crush the blacks like in the 12,800 video I posted (Thanks Amro). The NEX 5N is good in low light, it holds onto a lot of shadow detail but the overall image isn't as good as the GH2 in my opinion, looks more compressed and lower res. The 5D Mark II (OK it may not be under $1000 but just FYI) holds onto colour more accurately than anything else in low light. But again it cannot beat the GH2 for sheer detail. For my particular needs, could I get decent results with Panasonic's 14mm F2.5? Or would something like the SLR Magic 12mm F1.6 be indispensable? Don't really know what F value I should get.
