My cameras and kit

  1. I single-handedly shot an entire narrative short film during the first lockdown, using the original BMPCC. The camera performed magnificently but I did have it fully rigged out. Shot using two SLR Magic primes - 10mm T2.1 and the 17mm T1.6. A one-person crew and one-mother cast, this is a film featuring my poor mum, who’s never acted, and a very, very unlikely hero… Jean-Luc Godard once said “All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl.” My mum doesn’t speak very good English, so I had to do without dialogue. I didn’t have a gun so we had to do without that too. We couldn’t leave the house, so I shot it all there. And I had no crew to help me, so I did everything myself. If anyone has any feedback or questions I'm always happy to hear! https://youtu.be/SBwje8EDl84
  2. Hey all, I'm looking to shoot a narrative short film with controlled lighting early next year and am thinking about shooting it on my original BMPCC... I know, I know. No 4K, terrible low-light, and horrible battery life. But if 1080p was fine, controlled lighting throughout, and an external battery solution, is it better for me to use the original and cancel my 4K pre-order? I could use the money saved to pay for an additional cine prime/actually pay actors a decent wage... What would be the advantages in this case of using the 4K over the original?
  3. Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum but have been following it for a while. I'd like to share some music videos I shot for an electronic music album I wrote and just released. They were all filmed on the Blackmagic pocket cinema camera. The videos are essentially camera tests, but I tried to capture the mood of the music when putting it all together. I used the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and 55-200mm f3.5-5.6 lens with a Metabones speed booster (Nikon mount), and also the Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm kit lens and Olympus 9mm bodycap lens for the 4th video here. Editing and colour was done on Davinci Resolve 12.5 ASGAT (raw) Story of Photon (raw) Themis I (raw) Parallax Error (Prores HQ)
  4. Blackmagic 4k video assist is going to add a ton of good stuff to it. Might be a great buy for the money now. https://***URL removed***/news/8519969651/blackmagic-designs-promises-scopes-for-4k-video-assist-monitor-recorder
  5. Hello guys, just to share a new shoot about my grandfather´s brother, based on photos and items of his time (1905-1930). He was a poet, writer, painter and a theater actor. Filmed with Blackmagic Pocket, Speedbooster MFT and Sigma 18-35mm and one shot with the Samsung NX500 (4K) and Samsung 16-50mm power zoom (03:16). It´s in spanish, written and narrated by my sister Carmen de la Rosa, starring my nephew Manuel de la Rosa and the rest made by myself I hope you like it!
  6. Below is some footage I came across on YouTube. They calm this was shot on the Ursa Mini. Comments welcome...
  7. I'm a filmmaker in LA. Most of this was shot on BMCC and graded in DaVinci Resolve. https://vimeo.com/116922849 Feel free to share thoughts. Thanks!
  8. I'm starting to set myself up a small videography business: just a one-man-band doing local stuff - community group promos, weddings, etc. I'm still working on the website (www.lintelfilms.co.uk) and have just finished the 2nd draft of my promotional film. I'd really appreciate your feedback on the film. I don't mind at all if you are brutal!
  9. Looks like my BMPCC is dying. Or something is wrong with it. I've had it for a few months, and it worked just fine until now. With the latest firmware update. I haven't used it for the past three weeks, and it has been stored appropriately in a closet during that time. Today I took it out to prepare it for a shoot, and noticed that it wouldn't power on normally. First I thought the battery had dried out inside it, so I swapped it. Same result. When I press the power button, the screen will flash on like it normally does, but after that the camera goes dark, in less than a full second. Another press of the button either does the same, just a blip on the screen, then nothing, or it doesn't do anything. After recharging and trying out four different batteries and even with the power chord plugged in the camera, with or without a battery inside, the result is always the same. The camera powers on for less than a second, then becomes a brick. The camera does still have a warranty, obviously, and I know I'll probably have to send it in for a warranty repair, but I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem, and if anyone might know if there's anything I could try before sending it in. After all, sending it in for a warranty repair will probably take quite a while, and I'd like to avoid the hassle, if this happens to be some known issue and fixable by the user.
  10. This is a promotional reel I've just made for the small videography business I'm currently setting up (one-man-band doing local community organisations, weddings etc). Everything in it was shot on low-end/cheap cameras, several of which have been discussed and compared extensively on this forum over the last year or two. To boot, other than the Tokina 11-16mm all of the lenses were each bought for under $300. After a couple of enquiries about the gear I used for this reel, I've decided to add subtitles to show each camera (and lens) each shot was taken with. Just click the 'CC' button in the Vimeo play bar to turn the subtitles on. I'd welcome feedback on my reel, but this is mainly posted here in the hope it might be of use to others: Sorry the subtitles aren't synched perfectly to each edit (it's not easy with Amara). You'll work it out though I hope ...
  11. Noktor asked me to test out their new SLR Magic Hyperprime 10mm T2.1 for MFT. Thought some people might interested to see footage, as lately most MFT tests are done on the GH4. Here's the video: It's a pretty good wide angle option for the non-Speedbooster folk. Thanks for watching!
  12. Hi, Few weeks ago, the french dealer Digistore lent me the blackmagic URSA camera together with a set of Canon CN Lenses. We had fun shooting 'Petit Bateau' : The codec was set to 4K RAW, we had Canon CN lenses and my lovely SQN3 mixer connected to the camera. My friend Broad Rush made the sound design of that short experimental film, if you wish to know more about the characters, here are two music videos that I have directed and shot on BMCC :

    My first BMPCC footage

I received my BM Pocket last week (after buying it in the summer sale and waiting aaaagggges for it). Anyway, I haven't had much time to play with it so this is my first attempt (RAW and ProRes 422 mix): Graded in FCPX (Resolve to convert the RAW) I love the camera already. The image is just so rich and full and happy to be pushed around. The moire bothers me a fair bit, but it's not a deal breaker.

  15. No official prices announced. Estimated between 300 - 400 $.
  16. Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera users now have audio level metering, time remaining indicator and histograms, bringing the cameras’ display functions, into line with 4K and newest URSA models. http://www.newsshooter.com/2014/08/21/blackmagic-design-firmware-1-9-3-finally-offers-audio-level-meters-time-remaining-indicator-and-histograms-to-the-pocket-cinema-camera-and-bmcc/
  17. Here. Remaining time is top on everyone's wish list, very probably it will soon come for the smaller models. As histogram (a nice one!) and audio levels appear through the touchscreen-function 'Head-Up', they might be still missing for the Pocket, but let's be thankful that there are things to come (instead of the theory that BMD abandoned the BMPCC after clearing their storage rooms with the summer special).
  18. Hello! I've finished this music video and I wanted to share it with you all. Shot mostly on the BMCC (Sony FS700 for the slow mo and some GoProHD Hero 3). Edited in FCP 7. CC with Magic Bullet Colorista and Cinegrain.
  19. Hi everybody, 2 Years i'm following Eoshd and only discover the forum now ... So i share with You a series of travelling movie i start to shoot with a blackmagic pocket CC with a pancake 20mm f1,7, This starts in Japan / Tokyo:
  20. Was amused, recently, at some of the posts about Blackmagic ignoring their current users. Looks like laugh is on me. I don't know why they advertise Resolve 11 when you can only download 10. Noticed a new version from yesterday, 10.4.1 and downloaded it. Immediately I could tell there was something not quite right. Slow. Crashed. Wouldn't import BMPCC dngs as a clip. Noticed other bug reports on their forum. SO SUGGEST YOU WAIT UNTIL 10.1.5, or 11. I meant 10.1.4 in title, sorry. Maybe BM is over-extended?
  21. Have been seriously considering this lens for my GH3 and (eventually) the BMPCC - though I can't seem to find any non-nature/event footage to get an idea of how it performs when shooting narrative work... The focus-by-wire and electronic aperture will be a pain for video shooting also... But the 12-35 range is really appealing (esp for the BMPCC). Anyone have any experience with this lens beyond test videos and home movies? Is it possible to create cinematic images with it under the right conditions, or are primes the only way to go? And if so, what would be an ideal prime lens set for the BMPCC (regarding focal length, not brand/model)?
  22. Cheap CFL bulbs are convenient, efficient and economical - but they typically have a lower Colour rendering index compared to Tungsten based lights and other more expensive lighting systems. Just how much of a difference is there? You decide (additional images/stills on my website: http://www.tommajerski.com/critest.html ) Shot on the BMCC 2.5k in Raw mode. Samyang 35mm 1.4 lens with no ND or filters. White balanced perfectly before the same colour grade was applied in Davinci Resolve 10. Debayered to UHD for better youtube viewing quality. For best results, set it to 4k quality and video on a HD monitor. White balanced exactly to the same point before applying a simple Contrast + Saturation grade. Debayered to 4k for best youtube viewing quality: Select 4k Streaming
  23. Hey there, I am relatively new to these discussions; but after having scoured the internet for some answers I have been at a loss, so where better to ask than here??? I have been working for a my organisation for a year now, and my job is essentially being the in-house film-maker, for the past year I have been using my Hacked Lumix GH2 (don't ask me what type of hack it is, I did it in 2012, recording between 88-90mbps with no negative side effects, except that no playback is available until the camera has been turned off and on). I typically shoot in cinema 23.976 fps in 1080p and have a very fluid workflow (I produce about 2 videos a week for the company I work for). Since last month I have been 'upgraded' to the Canon 5D MkIII since the company didn't want me to use my personal gear (for insurance reasons, I travel a lot with the gear). And while there are some downsides in terms of bulkiness of the 5D body compared to the GH2 (and lack of swivel screen) it is a standalone camera and I find the two can't be compared too much: they are both great and stand well on their own depending on the job required. My ultimate question is: now that we're in 2014 and seeing as the GH4 is about to be released, what is the 'next level' in affordable DSLR's (or even dedicated cameras, like the Black Magic)in your opinion? I feel like I have been out of touch with the camera world since I hacked my GH2 in 2012, is this a camera that seems 'future proof' (with the hack) or will it shrivel to the upcoming 4k's?
