My cameras and kit

  1.   The first thing you have to think about, working with a camera like the Black Magic Cinema or Pocket Camera ist the power solution and how to split the video signal to serve video village, camera crane and so on.We searched a lot in the internet and found some solutions for HDMI signals.   Full article: CLICK
  2. With this recent price drop in BMCC, buying a 2.5K camera seems relevant again. Especially since it has one extra stop of dynamic range over the 4K version, and with the metabones speedbooster it actually has similar form factor regarding the DOF. And It could be a great B cam once you decide to get a 4K version (or if finances are low, get a pocket version as a B cam for 2.5K) Now my question is, would I need to buy a metoabones speedbooster for each of my lens types as I have contax yashica, Leica, Nikon, EF, etc... (which would be extremely expensive), or could I only get the EF to MFT version (once it comes out) and use the C/Y, Leica, etc... to EF adapter? Thanks a lot for your responses.
  3. Does anyone know if it's possible to create a good "recipe" for converting BMCC raw video to something similar to what the BMCC camera would create when it outputs Film Log ProRes - preferably using Adobe Camera Raw and After Effects? (I'll be using Resolve at some point, but I'm waiting for the new MacPro's to upgrade, and my 2012 Pre-Retina MacBook Pro can't handle Resolve).   To be more clear: I'd like to shoot RAW, but immediately batch convert to something that closely resembles what I would get if I had shot ProRes422 Film Log.     Is there such a recipe?  Or does the BMCC apply something more like a changeable algorithm to create it's ProRes Log?   So... what kind of curve, saturation, highlight control, shadow control, sharpening, noise reduction, etc... would you be best to use if you were willing to do a batch convert and then grade the ProRes afterward?  There may not be a "one-click" solution but my current workflow is brutally slow.   Thanks for any help anyone can be,   -Aaron
  4. Hi all, I've been hesitating forever of even thinking about starting the long process of collecting lenses, due to the inertia that the neverending onslaught of new technology brings. There are so many promising directions this whole world could go, from the super-16 BMPC to the full-frame Canon 5D Mark III RAW, so my current thinking is that it's most sensible to go with the largest coverage format (full frame) and collect lenses from there, and then if the market settles anywhere (super 35, full frame, APS-C), you won't have obsolete glass lying around. I'm looking for as many people as possible to poke holes in the intuition or offer different plans as my current one:   I've been thinking lately about collecting Nikon AI-S lenses, since they are the final (and presumably, best?) generation of Nikon manual focus glass.   Some advantages as I see it are: adaptibility to the largest range of lens mounts long-focus throw age-related image character je ne sais quoi good build quality relatively cheap relatively compact Nikon quality (perceived? Is Canon just as good/better? Does Canon have an equivalent AI-S-era option that would work on current Canons?) Nikon-optimization, as I prefer Nikon for stills work Cheap adapters can control aperture, as opposed to Canon mount Fast   Some disadvantages that I would imagine: Breathing and every other problem inherent in stills-optimized/non-cine lenses Difficulty finding cheap super wide options that would translate to normal lenses on much smaller sensors (Super 16, M43, BMCC, 1") Futility of collecting for BMPC when you end up settling on a 5DIII and have all these useless super-wides   I'm sure a lot of people on here have thought a lot harder than I have about this quandry, or have skin in the game already, so if anyone has some personal experience or insight on how the filmmaking community is currently addressing this issue, please contribute any and all wisdom! What are general lens collection strategies to maximize utility and minimize cost? Is it presumed that lenses will hold value, so you can just sell them off with minimal long-term losses? Are there lenses that better meet ones needs? Would Canon make more sense, since a follow focus will allow for long focus throws anyway? Are there cheaper options (Contax (Zeiss), for example?)   One caveat:   I shoot stills as well. Is it ridiculous to think that shooting manual focus on all my various stills cameras (NEX-7, GH2, frequent Nikon rentals) is possible, and that I'd need to invest in a second set of AF stills camera (obviously this is a nuanced question, as different photography genres have different needs, but my work does include street photography).
  5. Hey Andrew,     I saw your post about working with premiere/ae with the bmcc and noticed you said you are using a macbook with an SSD as the main drive.     I just got my BMCC and havent been able to really use it at all because my macbook keeps crapping on itself everytime I try to do anything with the dng files or resolve. I have the same exact laptop as you I believe: Apple 2011 Macbook Pro 17' i7 8GB RAM.   I've been trying to do as much research as I can about installing an SSD as the main drive and switching the optical drive out of my computer in order to place my current 750gb HDD where I can save files to and actually have space to put stuff in. (I have plenty of external hard drives too, but it's nice to have space on your computer as well) The SSD I am very close to purchasing is the Samsung 840 Pro Series 256gb, which is supposed to be VERY, VERY fast.     The only thing stoppnig me from going through with it is the "cloning" process. I know I will have to put my OS (lion) on the ssd, but I am very confused about what I should do with all my applications (adobe cs6, divinci resolve, lightroom, film convert, etc, etc), and all the plugins I use like magic bullet, video copilot stuff, twixtor etc, along with everything else that is on my HDD right now. The reason I'm confused is because some people have told me that even though all that stuff will be saved on the HDD, I will have to go back and reinstall all the applications I use, onto the SSD. In short, I am just COMPLETELY lost about what I actually need to put on the SSD and how.     I have asked many different BMD and apple reps and have called nearby computer service stores and have gotten different answers from each of them. So I hope I can finally get an answer I trust from you since you have actually done the upgrade to the same computer I have, and have had great results with it, especially with your BMCC.   Thanks so much,   Omar A.

  7. I am not affiliated with Audio Developments, nor have I received payment in conjunction with this offer.   I posted this originally on BMCUser.com, but thought that you guys might also be interested?? Audio Developments are a UK based company that make ultra high end mixers that can usually be seen gracing sound carts of major motion pictures. They have recently produced a mini-mixer aimed at the thinner wallet but retaining the quality they are renowned for. This thing is a beast and it has been offered to us at a discounted rate as a part of a group buy. We have had an offer from Audio Developments. I will PM all members that show interest this deal. Please DO NOT PUBLISH THE PRICE ON THE FORUM. There is potentially quite a significant discount on offer and we don't want to upset ADs resellers. If you're interested, just post below. Remember. As with all the group buy offers I've been posting there is no obligation to buy by showing interest if you don't like the final offer price, you don't buy.. Simples. Also, could you please tell me the country you would want the mixer shipped to when expressing your interest. Thanks! Cheers! Owen
  8. In this interview: http://vimeo.com/63892665#at=0   ... Petty says, that due to debayering the image of the Pocket BMCC was 'not so sharp as that of the 2,5k camera, but close'. He also talks about the idea to wrap DNGs as Quicktime files in order to facilitate playback (okay, I see Andrew wrote about this a week ago, I lost that then).   The interviewer made a short film with the BMCC and compared the camera to the 5D, this is his channel.

  10. I'm currently use a canon 70-200 f4 with my iscorama 54 on my 5d mark II and it fits perfectly and allows me to zoom with the canon and focus with the isco.  I'm thinking about buying a BMCC and an not sure how to mirror this setup on that camera. I did look at the panasonic 35-100 f2.8 but its kinda pricey.   Also what is the widest lens that I can use on the BMCC with a iscorama 54? 28mm?     Any other suggestions?      Thanks Greg

  12. I'm in a tricky situation.   I have been saving for the last 6 months to buy a camera (about 3k) and am troubled about which one I really should pull the trigger on.   I have been using purely Canon DSLR's for the past year by working for a friend filming and editing "cinematic" weddings as well as our first commercial work. For the past 4 months it has been enough for me to work full time on. We have used 5DmkII's and 60d's mostly with a full set up of L glass--all his.   Now I want to own something for myself. I'm used to Canons but not terribly excited about their new tech out. I can borrow glass from him to start but plan to purchase some of my own later in 2013.    I want to use this on small documentary work and some narrative shorts that I have been writing. Something I could use for work though is important. Can't justify 3k on just a hobby.   My initial thoughts on cameras:   -Need to be versatile and adaptable to different situations for Event Videography -Form factor is important. Less rigging the better. I shoot mostly on a monopod and try to get my subject to feel very comfortable. I don't like hiding behind a wall of cords and knobs. Also the more rigging the less creative I tend to be with shot angles as I feel too worn down by weight. -Unique. My one complaint with Canon and L glass is it just feels so sterile. Not much character in flares and things. -Stills are not important. -Needs to last me 2 years.   Which camera fits my need? GH3, 6D, 5DmkIII, or BMCC? To me they each have a lot of ups and downs.   Thanks
  13. I loathe the idea of buying a camera whose rolling shutter speed is not significantly faster than the 5D mark ii. The BMCC would be far more appealing to me if it had a global shutter.A rotary disc shutter add-on could do the trick. The sensor is small enough on the BMCC that an appropriate rotary disc shutter needn't be very large.15cm in diameter is probably overkill, but the bigger the better for the purposes of eliminating rolling shutter. It could have a male mFT mount on the camera side and a female canon EF mount on the lens side. The shutter angle should be variable as in the Photosonics and Hulcher 70mm cameras. There needs to be a syncing mechanism. It's complicated, but not ridiculously so.Blackmagic oughta whip something up in time for the wide release of the mFT-mount BMCC.I would pay $500 without a second thought.Matter of fact, any one of the 35mm-adapter companies could make themselves relevant again by making a universal e-mount/mFT rotary disc shutter. The spinner guys are already almost there. (Why the hell hasn't this happened already?)Thoughts?
  14. Hi, Can anyone help me with these question? Now we can have the option to use BMCC with M4/3 mount, isn't that right? If that's right, can I use my anamorphic lens on BMCC? On GH2 ,with a sankor for example, I have to use at least a 50 mm lens to avoid vignette. How will be these issue with BMCC sensor? Best regards. Francisco.
