  1. All of Edgar Wright's films have had impressive or, at the very least, quite pleasing and slick cinematography and his most recent installment to his and Simon Pegg's "Cornetto Trilogy", The World's End, is no exception.  There's a great feature article covering the style and technical approach to the film in the September issue of American Cinematographer Magazine (http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/September2013/current.php).   When it got to the lens selection for the anamorphic portions of the film (once the scifi madness kicks in) I wasn't at all surprised that Wright and his DP went for a classic sampling that included C-Series lenses for their greater character versus new cinema anamorphics.  Wright likes to shine lights into the lens as much as anyone here (and he does it so much better than JJ Abrams).  Coincidentally, Panavision made a discovery at their Woodland Hills location, a B-Series that Panavision had failed to catalog and been long forgotten.      Given the way a lot of discussions go around here over this anamorphic or that anamorphic, I had to smile when I read the part where this DP praises aberration and soft edges.           ...and I always like when they go into this sort of detail, about working or target stops used on a film.  Anyway, it's a nicely detailed story about a contemporary anamorphic film that's worth grabbing an issue for.     Only God Forgives is likewise covered in this issue, and though it's not anamorphic it is, very surprisingly, a mostly practicals show with very few cinema lights used.  Having seen the film it's almost too hard to believe the information in the article.
  2. Hello, everyone. I'm new to the forum. Anamorphic lens are getting really tough to find on ebay so I figured I should try other means. :) I'm interested in acquiring one of the cheaper anamorphic lens like Sun, Sankor, Singer or similar. Please, if there's anyone interested in selling, contact me.   Thanks!

  5. I'm parting with my beloved LA7200 and all that goes with it: adapter rings, diopters set (+0.5, +1, +2), Cinetactics mattebox, the whole shebang.   Everything is in perfect working order, as new.   I bought it after reading Andrew's ultimate guide on anamorphic and must say I've been really pleased with it AFTER I managed to get my hands on the +0.5 diopter that is. It now focuses from infinity to about 20cm with a 14mm pancake.   Have been using it with my GH2 & following lens combo: 14mm Panasonic pancake, 24mm & 35mm Nikkor.   All pics are available on http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=171124778730   Get in touch if any question...   & while you're at it, check out the trailer I shot last month for a feature thriller film noir THRILLER FILM NOIR I'm prepping: https://vimeo.com/72806937   Cheerio, J.
  6. Just put up some examples of what a 1950s Zeiss Ultrascope lens looks like when shooting wide open at an F2. Has a really great dream-like quality to it.   Shooting an Anamorphic Music Video in 1950s Ultrascope
  7. Hey people, as a first endeavor I recently got my hands on some Rectimascop 48/2x lenses. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these and if so what is it.   Does anyone have a complete break down of a DSLR setup that works? (Clamps, bars, diapers, lens, etc...)   Thanks in advance
  8. Model Kyllie music video shot with Canon 5DmkIII RAW and Panasonic GH3. This is my first foray into shooting a music video with slow motion in mind. I also wanted to shoot with Anamorphic lenses and use a Steadicam for movement.  Learned a lot from this shoot, I hope to make the next one much better.   https://vimeo.com/72950991
  9. Reading through the shoother guide book I notice Andrew refers to the ML 50D as a Super 35mm raw shooting cinema camera, and this confuse me a bit, I know that within the ML you can set the camera to do a 4:3 crop mimicking the crop of a 35mm film yeah but the relationship with the optics is still like a crop sensor camera right? I mean the sensor is not getting any bigger so you still suffer from not being able to use all the glass and so having to do the Focal Length multiplication. I also noticed Andrew recommends using 64gb cards but frankly I can't afford them right now so are 32gb cards still fine? I will be working with a PC close so I will be able to upload the data while working. Thanks in advance. PD: I decided to make a forum trend after mailing this to Andrew after noticing that he doesn't like to be asked this questions by mail so sorry for that!!
  10. Testing out my recently acquired lenses with my Canon 5DmkIII using RAW.  The ability to record 3:2 as 1920x1280 is really great, but there is still a very limited ability to shoot wide with 2x Anamorphic lenses, in this case my Sankor 16D.  I have a Panasonic LA7200, but it's only a 1.33x stretch and doesn't get me the nice oval bokehs and stretched OOF areas that I want.  I really wish there was some kind of wide option using a 2x Anamorphic lens.  I also tested 1920x1280 versus 1920x1080 to see the difference.   https://vimeo.com/72941440   https://vimeo.com/72941441
  11. I have a newly serviced and tested, super sharp CinemaScope for sale. It has a deeper Rose Gold colour than the one illustrated.   The ISCO Ultra Star CinemaScope Anamorphic Anamorphot with 15mm rod rail support included. Focus range is 1.5m to Infinity at all F-stops with a normal focussing helicoid as standard.   You can purchase from me direct from the link in the footer or via my ebay listing.    You can purchase with confidence as I am an active member of this great forum and I am Paypal or Credit Card friendly and include a 14 day return with buyer paying shipping.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/130969131159?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
  12. This question is ultimately for a lens to pair with my anamorphic lenses, but it applies to non-anamorphic shooters as well so I have posted it outside of the anamorphic forum.   Looking at adapters, it appears the shortest flange distances (and thus, adapters) are C-mount, Contax, M39, and Pen F in roughly that order.   My only criteria is that the lens would need to be at the very least 45mm (maximum 85mm), and with a non-rotating front -- you'll see that this eliminates most "pancake" lenses.   The M39 Industar 50 (50mm f/3.5) and Contax Zeiss Tessar 45mm f/2.8 look like good options, but I'd like to start a discussion and see if anyone knows of any other good options.
  13. Hi   I just have bought a Canon 5DMKIII and am experimenting with the RAW hack. As a Anamorphic lover i would like to pair my 1968 Iscorama x1.5 (m42 mount with the original 50mm f2.8) with the MKIII. Coming from a GH2 crop sensor world and new to the FF world i would like to ask for some advise. On the GH2 i used the Helios 44-2 and a old FD50mm as the taking lens. Not so keen on the Helios....   Which (old) manual lens would be a great combination on the MKIII? (As a taking lens) Love the flares of my Iscorama so i am looking for a non/single coated solution. Any experiences?   Never used the MKIII with the Magic Lantern anamorphic combi yet. Is the hack de-squizing live, even in the RAW mode?    Hope that you guys are willing to share some thoughts.   Thank you in advanced.

  15. Hey guys, I found this new anamorphic lenses ... information here:   The Servicevision Booth was directly across from ours at NAB. Managing Director and Cinematographer Andres Valles surprised me on opening day with a preview of a set of 13 Scorpiolens anamorphic primes to be introduced at IBC in September. He also introduced me to the lens designer, physicist and optical engineer Cristina Alcaide. The Scorpiolens anamorphics are all 2x squeeze, and all have a slender front diameter of 95 mm. They are T2.0 from 24 through 100 mm. 130 to 260 mm are T2.8. The 300 mm is T3. Average length of the lenses is a mere 6.3 inches. The 24, 28, 150, and 200 mm are 7.5 inches long. The 260 mm is 8.3 inches, and 300 mm is 9.6 inches.     More info: :o   http://www.fdtimes.com/2012/04/29/scorpiolens-anamorphic-prime-lenses/       The Scorpiolens 2x anamorphic lenses are expected to exhibit practically no breathing and very little distortion, even at close focus. They will cover up to ANSI Super 35 Silent aperture (31.14 mm diameter). Feet and meter scales can be exchanged. Internal focus keeps the lens a constant length. Telecentric and multi-aspheric design, high resolution, and consistent optical performance are planned over the entire focus range. Servicevision is the largest motion picture rental house and manufacturing facility in Spain. Offices in the US are in North Hollywood. - See more at: http://www.fdtimes.com/2012/04/29/scorpiolens-anamorphic-prime-lenses/#sthash.jTi2HrSd.dpuf

  18. http://vimeo.com/70387959   For this video, I shot with a slower CF Card (60MBS) that gave me 1152 X 864 resolution at 24 FPS in 4:3 mode without skipping frames. I could shoot for at least 4 minutes (I didn't try shooting longer). I did my color correction with Adobe Photoshop and converted to 2304 X 864 in Compressor.   Anyone shooting anamorphic video in 4:3 with a 2X lens? Please share workflow and shooting tips.   Thank you.
  19. I recently shot a teaser video for a feature film I'm developing. I'm aiming for a slightly analog look so I've been using AIS Nikkor lenses with the Bolex Moller 16/32/1.5x adapter lens mounted to them. The Bolex has a 39mm filter thread on the back, so I'm able to attach it with a simple 39mm to 52mm ring. However, the only way I can align the anamorphic lens with this adapter is by keeping the filter thread screwed slightly loose, and rotating it to the right alignment, then sticking it in place with a thin strip of tape.   This works alright, but I'd like to figure out something more stable for purpose of a feature film. I've looked fairly extensively at the clamps available online, but I can't find anything (Redstan or otherwise) that is specifically tailored to fit the somewhat atypically shallow rear element of this lens, and I wondered if anybody else has had experience with this? I just need a solution that won't add a very substantial amount of length/vignetting to the lens, and will allow me to lock its alignment down. The tape solution results in slight, noticeable shifting around every time we refocus the lens.   Thank you!   Here's the teaser, shot it on an NEX-5n with the aforementioned lenses. Looking into filming the feature on a C300 or a Scarlet.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgqLqHZk3-A
  20. http://vimeo.com/71062233   For this video, I shot with a faster CF Card (100 MBS) that gave me 1344 X 1008 resolution at 24 FPS in Magic Lantern hack 4:3 mode without skipping frames. I could shoot for at least 6 minutes (I didn't try shooting longer). I did my color correction with Adobe Photoshop and converted to 2688 X 1008 in Compressor for Vimeo.   Thoughts and comments welcome. Thank you.
  21. Hello. I am fairly new to shooting dslr video. For the past several months, I've been shooting with a Canon t3i // Canon 50mm f/1.8. I'm now looking into wider (budget-ish) lenses. Obviously there are some really really nice ones I could get for $1000+, but for right now I'm looking for something a little cheaper.  The main two I've been looking at are the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and the Sigma 30mm f1.4. My main concern with the 17-50mm is that I'm not going to be satisfied with the f2.8 and might want something even faster. I want my shots to look very cinematic and professional, which this may be a good lens for that, I don't know. My concern with the 30mm is that it won't be wide enough. I don't like how close up my 50mm is on a glidecam, when I shoot outside and want to get a wide shot of the landscape or something. I'm just not sure that the 30mm will be THAT different from the 50mm. Working on a tight budget, I need my lenses to be usable for many different things until I can build up my inventory. The kinds of videos I would shoot are promo videos and weddings, mostly, but I also want to shoot videos of outdoor adventures I go on.   I plan on renting lenses before I make a final decision, but I wanted to get some input before I even did that.   Thanks for your help in advance,   Josh
