My cameras and kit

  1. Hello, My name is Daniel Kharlak. I'm a long time reader and lurker and I've decided to join the forum and share some of my work. This is a film I shot in my senior year of film school for my friend John. We were looking for a look that was reminiscent of intimate 70s photography and wanted to avoid the crisp, shiny look of modern DSLRs and large-sensor cameras, and go for something grittier and all-together more old-school. So in a fit of monstrous insanity, we fitted an Eiki 16mm anamorphic adapter to a Panasonic HPX already wearing a Letus Depth-of-Field adapter. It was a Frankenstein-esque contraption that required calibration at the top of every day. It's a procedure and a look that I don't think anyone else has tried before. I hope that you guys enjoy! And try to spot the one single shot that we actually pulled focus on!
  2. My first footage shot with my Baby Hypergonar anamorphic lens. Cut to the music of Dances with Wolves. Enjoy
  3. Two Luchadores face off in this battle for supremacy.
  4. Hey there, I wanted to share my first test with my SLR Magic Anamorphot adapter and see if anyone else is using this adapter and what lenses they've found work well. Specifically for EF mount. I shot this with a Canon C100 using the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art lens, which worked beautifully. I'm looking to find other lenses that will work well which I've had little luck. I think it works best with lenses that have a narrow front lens element. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Here is the video:
  5. Did a little test yesterday with a friend, getting shots have become much quicker since I can single focus with the FM now. This is a relevantly cheap setup as I got the takumar for about $70(US), Isco Ultra star fro about $400, FM was about $750. Pentax Super Takumar 50mm 1.4, Isco Ultra Star Anamorphic Lens, Focus Module Lens, Panasonic GH4, Natural Picture Profile with all settings dialed down, Simple color grade in Premiere, BGM : Bic Runga 'Listening for the Weather'
  6. Comes with: Sankor 16c in great condition 46mm thread Redstan clamp pics up soon $400 shipped in USA
  7. Hello, I've been experimenting with shooting anamorphic video on my GH4 in 4K photo mode, using a Rectimascop 48/2x adaptor. The more I shoot, the more I see the need to monitor the unsqueezed video in real time, for better control of composition and focus. Can anyone recommend an HDMI field monitor, 5" to 7", with the ability to stretch the video width x2? Many thanks, Izhar
  8. Wanted to share: I just recently shot this new music video by Bay Area musician Jeff Campbell, "Save Me," shot on the Canon 70D with only the help of tripods and a monopod. Black and white, flares galore. The camera was great, through and through. Had much tighter focus than my 7D. Have a watch:
  9. Hi anamorphic friends, I'm working a lot these past months so I post less than usual ;) Here is a teaser of the new album of Arthur H, a famous french singer. It was done before last summer, shot on GH3 + my baby Hypergonar 1.75x on my Qioptiq 35mm f1.6 MeVis-C C-mount lens. Badfully I didn't have the GH4 yet ;) My actual work is a 26mn Making Of a long feature movie, shot by me in 4K anamorphic in Ethiopia last november. Stay tune. Thanks
  10. Testing out lenses with the Iscorama 36 wide open. I really want that separation from the background. It's easy now with the Metabones Speedbooster EF. There is something to be said about full frame lenses used with the Speedbooster vs micro 4/3rds native lenses. Also the Iscorama is the sharpest of the anamorphic adapters, although there are still some lenses that don't do well wide open. Shot on a GH4 4K (before v2.0 firmware, 16:9). Iscorama minimum distance is around 6 feet, half that with the Tokina +0.4 diopter.
  11. UPDATE: FOR FOCAL LENGTH PLEASE CHOOSE FULL-FRAME (35MM) EQUIVALENT (with focal reducer calculated into equation if used)! I think you should be able to delete your vote and then re-vote if you haven't. If your exact answer is not listed, please chose the closest. Feel free to explain and/or elaborate in the comments below.
  12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh_IGpE-JGA&list=UUBWpVAaEn9CvmidPcK_mFHw After work yesterday, drove past the Auckland Domain. Weather was too good to pass up the opportunity to shoot something. Although it got cold really fast again. Can't believe its supposed to be summer. Slowly getting used to the dual focusing. I found myself rushing a little bit in this kind of situation because I wanted to get shots while the sun was still up.
  13. Please have a look at the music promo I made using a kowa 8-Z anamorphic adaptor, mounted on a voigtlander Nokton 35mm F1.2, using a Lumix GH3. I also had a Tokina .4 achromat and a Cokin Diopter +2 for the Close ups. It was all shot at night which presented problems as the Lumix isn't very good in low light. I was shooting at 50fps which reduced the amount of light I had even further. I also found that if the lens was fully open it was difficult to get a focus. Not because it was too shallow, but because it wouldn't focus on anything! As you can see I over-cranked the ISO on occasion, but I couldn't set lights up on the banks of the Thames at 3am, as we didn't have permission to be there. I wish I'd got someone to stand close by reflecting a bright torch off a white shirt though. I can only hope that I get away with the graininess in the spirit of low/no budget film making, and it looks like 16mm! Staying close to the subject, using the diopters, gave me a picture I liked the most. The bokeh looks lovely and soft and cinematic. Shots where I had to focus to infinity were difficult - the bokeh is ugly in those shots (in my opinion), taking the shape of a kind of horizontal tear. But I couldn't film the whole video in close ups! It was difficult to shot this as a one-man-band. Having to screw two different diopters on or off every time I wanted to change my proximity to the actors made it quite fiddly. I was also moving lights (I had x3 LED panels). I had some other taking lenses, but it wasn't practical to change during the shoot. Lastly, I know its normal to crop the super-wide picture you get from shooting 2x anamorphic on a 16:9 sensor, but I decided to embrace it. It's fun, and a bit silly, but its a music promo, so why not. Hope you enjoy. The track by Durlston George, his debut single, is lovely.
  14. Screw A7s! Here's my 60D in low light lol. Just a quick test around the city. Tell me what you think. Is this set up working? Pentax 50mm 1.4 mounted with Isco ultra anamorphic lens http://vimeo.com/113132382
  15. Just a short fashion film I shot during a photoshoot the other day. Its pretty much the first real thing I have shot with my anamorphic lens, mainly due to its lack of run and gun ability, but I found with the 35-70 things worked out pretty smoothly. Never had to swap out lenses and it performs very well. I did not use the new firmware update photo mode. Mostly 48 & 60 fps Let me know what you think?! (Ive got a 15second version on my page too)
  16. Hey, Was wondering if anyone could give me a hand with this. I am totally new to this topic, I know absolutely nothing about it. I work for a local movie theater, and they had an old projector upstairs, with this lens attached to it. The manager said I could take it, so I figured I'd post online to find out more about it, and maybe see if it's worth anything. I had troubles uploading the pictures directly, so I hope linking is okay on this site. Lens is in good condition, just needs to be cleaned up. Hasn't been used in years. Thanks in advance. http://tinypic.com/r/2d94izn/8 http://tinypic.com/r/c3xja/8 http://tinypic.com/r/mv46zb/8 http://tinypic.com/r/w811jn/8
  17. I don't know if this has been posted before, but here's Mauri Galiano's very nice test which compares the GH4's various aspect ratios in 4k "Photo" mode using a Bolex 16/32 1.5x, an Isco 1.7x and a 2x Proskar. This sealed my decision to finally pull the trigger on a GH4. The only limitation I see right now is it's only in 30p and 25p. Apparently someone within Panasonic is pushing hard for 24p. Otherwise the GH4 (except low light) is an embarrsment of riches. eris
  18. Trying to understand / fix the LA7200 to make it clearer, less CA, sharper and more usable. Building a lens from other lenses to attempt to do this. In any case, im trying to understand what is causing the issues in general using the LA7200 on DSLR or Blackmagic cinema camera. Is it because of the sensor cropping then? The LA7200 was designed for a 4:3 sensor crop therefore it will not work correctly on the BMCC, or larger sensors? Or is it simply a design flaw overall of the LA7200 , poor lens design / poor coating If it is a crop sensor issue, what is happening on the LA7200 to cause issues because the sensors are larger crop. Is the back lens element simply too small, where the image is being projected against the taking lens too small therefore when desqueezed you see parts of the image you really should not? i.e. the taking lens and the sensor is capturing too much of the la7200? By adding a diopter behind it does that then, make it larger i.e. projects less of what is seen from the front of the la7200 to the sensor? Or is it more complex than this. I have tried using a diopter behind the LA7200 i think its a Tokina 0.5 Not sure. I mean it says No 0.05 so I dont know at this point. In any case it does not seem to help. Just trying to understand, thanks anyone that can help.
  19. Hi, I'm starting doing anamorphic photography and EOSHD has been great helping me understanding this technic. I'm shooting with a Nikon Df that have a 3:2 ratio. My anamorphic adapter is a Kowa Prominar 16-H 2x. To find the aspect ratio, I took a photo at home to a circular box and squeezed the image until it turned circular. It gave me a ratio of 2,82:1, as you can see in this image https://www.dropbox.com/s/bmq13xv97syuzx5/DSC_7602_2%2C82.jpg?dl=0 I read an article somewhere that talked about a value of 2,66:1. I tried that but the box resulted a little ovalized https://www.dropbox.com/s/qxmxy9qtn9iokgi/DSC_7602_2%2C66.jpg?dl=0 Is my aspect ratio correct? I have this doubt because I can't find anywhere what's the best ratio when we are shooting in 3:2. My first anamorphic images with a 2,82:1 ratio https://www.flickr.com/photos/96852153@N00/sets/72157649089398262/ Thank you, Nuno Boavida
  20. 4th anamorphic exercise, now with +1 diopter. Shot in Tel Aviv, Nov. 7, 2014 using a Panasonic GH4 in 4K Photo Mode, 3:2 aspect ratio, Cine D. Lenses: Canon FD 50mm f/1.4, Rectimascop 48/2x anamorphic. Edited and graded with FCPX.
  21. Hi, I would be hugely greatful if someone can offer me some advice on this lens and the problem i have with it. I have just recieved a Isco - Gottingen lens and the focus ring seems to be locked at 16m. I'm unable to focus and was hoping someone was able to inform me the correct way to be able to fix this, or inform me as to which sew to undo. Many thanks for you time :)
  22. I've been looking everywhere, but I can seem to find anything solid on squeezing anamorphic footage on Premiere Pro, only found methods for FCP. If anyone knows the best method of squeezing 1.5x and 2x anamorphic footage on Premiere Pro, that would be greatly appreciated.
  23. I've just received my second Iscorama Cinegon. The first Cinegon I have I noticed when I rotate the focus ring below 2m it will just fall apart. This doesn't happen to the original Iscorama I have. I thought it was the fault of my Cinegon at the time since its condition was so bad. When I got another Cinegon it's just exactly the same as the first one. It's like you're screwing the front glass out. So, is it normal for the Cinegon version?
