My cameras and kit

  1. Hi, I'm starting doing anamorphic photography and EOSHD has been great helping me understanding this technic. I'm shooting with a Nikon Df that have a 3:2 ratio. My anamorphic adapter is a Kowa Prominar 16-H 2x. To find the aspect ratio, I took a photo at home to a circular box and squeezed the image until it turned circular. It gave me a ratio of 2,82:1, as you can see in this image https://www.dropbox.com/s/bmq13xv97syuzx5/DSC_7602_2%2C82.jpg?dl=0 I read an article somewhere that talked about a value of 2,66:1. I tried that but the box resulted a little ovalized https://www.dropbox.com/s/qxmxy9qtn9iokgi/DSC_7602_2%2C66.jpg?dl=0 Is my aspect ratio correct? I have this doubt because I can't find anywhere what's the best ratio when we are shooting in 3:2. My first anamorphic images with a 2,82:1 ratio https://www.flickr.com/photos/96852153@N00/sets/72157649089398262/ Thank you, Nuno Boavida
  2. Hi. I just wanted to show of my latest short film STORM. I shot it on the Panasonic Lumix GH4 with Kowa/Bell and Howell Anamorphic Please let me know what you think. //eric
  3. Testing my Sony a7s with kowa prominar 16 H, Taking lens is a Russian Jupiter-11A
  4. Some moods testing the new photo mode in the 4:3 ratio with my 2X kowa anamorphic adapter. More in the description. Very nice feature to have now.
  5. Please have a look at the music promo I made using a kowa 8-Z anamorphic adaptor, mounted on a voigtlander Nokton 35mm F1.2, using a Lumix GH3. I also had a Tokina .4 achromat and a Cokin Diopter +2 for the Close ups. It was all shot at night which presented problems as the Lumix isn't very good in low light. I was shooting at 50fps which reduced the amount of light I had even further. I also found that if the lens was fully open it was difficult to get a focus. Not because it was too shallow, but because it wouldn't focus on anything! As you can see I over-cranked the ISO on occasion, but I couldn't set lights up on the banks of the Thames at 3am, as we didn't have permission to be there. I wish I'd got someone to stand close by reflecting a bright torch off a white shirt though. I can only hope that I get away with the graininess in the spirit of low/no budget film making, and it looks like 16mm! Staying close to the subject, using the diopters, gave me a picture I liked the most. The bokeh looks lovely and soft and cinematic. Shots where I had to focus to infinity were difficult - the bokeh is ugly in those shots (in my opinion), taking the shape of a kind of horizontal tear. But I couldn't film the whole video in close ups! It was difficult to shot this as a one-man-band. Having to screw two different diopters on or off every time I wanted to change my proximity to the actors made it quite fiddly. I was also moving lights (I had x3 LED panels). I had some other taking lenses, but it wasn't practical to change during the shoot. Lastly, I know its normal to crop the super-wide picture you get from shooting 2x anamorphic on a 16:9 sensor, but I decided to embrace it. It's fun, and a bit silly, but its a music promo, so why not. Hope you enjoy. The track by Durlston George, his debut single, is lovely.

  8. Like to share this one shot acoustic Music Video I created for Arctic Chanteur, North Star Blues singer, ex Madrugada frontman Sivert Hoyem. Shot with a Kowa Anamorphic. Tokina Diopter. Redstan Clamp. Canon 50mm FD 1.2
  9. Hi! I have this anamorphic lens but I can't really know what it is exactly. Who can tell? It's exactly similar to a Kowa/Sankor/Singer 16D (and the "72mm Front Filter Ring" works on it), but it's only written on "Japan 2X anamorphic lens for BELL & HOWELL". Is it better or cheaper than the others Kowa/Sankor/Singer? My other question is: would it need an achromat or is it good enough to work "nude"? (I would like to try an "okina achromatic close up +0.4" with this anamo and have maybe a sharper image.) Would it work inevitably better with an Okina, or not? Thanks a lot!
  10. Simple, all-in-one lens kit for S35 and M43 sensors, I've shot many fun projects with this sharp and agreeable little setup. It's for sale now for anyone interested. Moving to SLR Magic Anamorphot soon. Let me know if you have any questions, thanks for looking! Click here for eBay auction, demo video in description.
  11. A Day at the Zoo with a Kowa Prominar 16-D in front of a Nikon (e) 50mm f/1.8 using the Redstan clamp.
  12. Hi there, I have just got a Kowa 16D over the weekend. I am completely new to this and I have read on this forum and elsewhere, but I am not sure yet of what lens and clamps are best. Apparently, the Kowa 16D is not the same as the 8Z, as they say here. I have seen that in a lot of videos people is using the Helios 44 with Redstan Clamps. Is this the best for the Kowa 16D? I have also seen that some guys are using the Nikon 50mm. I have got a Panasonic GH2 with a SLR Magic 25mm T0.95. So I believe I will need to buy a lens anyway. I would like to also add some diopters as well. If you guys have some suggestions, I will very much appreciate any comments. Thank you PS: I am at work and I have the lens at home, so I will post some pictures later.
  13. Hello, I've been traveling since may 2013, and making travel videos with my gh3 and a ts3cine highspeed camera. I was inspired by EOSHD to try out an anamorphic lens. Having blown my budget on gear before i left, I was looking for something on the cheap. I managed to grab a Bell & Howell Kowa 2x from ebay for $340. I had it sent to my mom and she met me in Bangkok. So here is the first stuff I have shot with a anamorphic. Run and gun with a dual focus anamorphic, not the easiest..... If you like please check out my vimeo page for lots of other travel videos.... Thanks, James
  14. The EosHD Anamorphic guide persuaded me to buy this lens so i see only fitting to post this here. So im auctioning off this Kowa Bell & Howell 2x anamorphic lens. 17. Hi anamorphic lens buffs,   I've just purchased a GH3 and want to get involved in the wonderful world of anamorphic lenses... but after extensive reading and looking on ebay, I'm confused. Apologies if some of my questions are idiotic.   It seems the consensus is that iscorama is the best - but with none currently on ebay I can't find how much one should be. How much should a 36 go for, or a 54, and where might I source one?   What are the Isco Optic Ultra / blue star? Are these related to the iscorama? Some on ebay are labelled Isco Iscorama - is it the same company? Are these wrongly labelled? Here is an example of one:   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Anamorphic-Lens-RARE-Isco-Iscorama-2x-MINT-DSLR-GH3-GH2-5D-Canon-COMPACT-Sharp-/171168616302?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item27da71cf6e   Also many of the pictures of the lens have a ruler showing how long they are. How does the length affect them?    This one for example (though it has no ruler) is marked as 120mm. What does that refer to?   http://www.ebay.com/itm/isco-optic-120mm-with-schneider-super-cinelux-anamorphic-lens-/121211839272   One of my main concerns is getting a lens which will fit over my taking lenses. I have a Voightlander 35mm (which has a 52mm thread), which should be fine... I'm assuming I'd struggle to use my Rokinon 24mm, which has a lens circumference of 77mm, both because it is so wide at the front, but also cause it would vignette badly.   On the GH3 the 35mm lens becomes roughly a 70mm. With the anamorphic adaptor, does it effectively become a 35mm again?   Please could people give me their opinions of the following choices, and their pros and cons? They vary a lot in price and size.    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kowa-Bell-and-Howell-2x-Anamorphic-Lens-Perfect-Condition-w-Lens-caps-RARE-/181235078150?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item2a3273d406   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bausch-and-Lomb-Anamorphic-Lens-2x-Cinemascope-lens-holder-for-15mm-rods-/231089701199?pt=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item35ce05014f   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Isco-Optic-Ultra-MC-2x-35mm-Anamorphic-Cinemascope-lens-DSLR-Micro-4-3-/121210681244   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SANKOR-ANAMORPHIC-16C-16mm-WIDE-PROJECTION-LENS-/221311304014   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KOWA-16mm-Prominar-Anamorphic-16-H-LENS-52030-/281127357879?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41747f0db7     I'm also interested in the SLR Magic anamorphic. Does anyone know when that will be available to buy?   Lastly, people seem to recommend the  Helios 44mm a lot. Why is this?   If it makes a difference to my choice, I think I prefer blue flares over brown, and the nearest focal distance the better... I guess thats what everyone wants!    Thanks for reading my rather long post! All advice gratefully received.   Many thanks all,   Jules
  18. Hello Guys! Just a small example how good this combo is. Really happy with the results  ;)   D5200 used here because I'm waiting for my Nikon F to mft adapter. 20. Hi, All!   Just thought I'd share some color grading that I've been fiddling with. I shot a bunch of footage at the local carnival a month back, and now I'm working on grading it for one of my personal music video projects.    I've used my own take on a bleach bypass process that simultaneously adds the teeniest touch of blue to the lows, then with a couple more nodes, I've tweaked exposure and of course that nasty red/orange/yellow/green zone of color that seems to always make or break skintones has had some subtle adjustments.   Lemme know what you think!   http://www.flickr.com/photos/68917223@N05/sets/72157634804640007/with/9375308962/

  22. Here are some stills from footage I shot this evening. I'll probably use it in the music visual for a song that I am writing.   Shot on GH2 with Driftwood's Moon T5 patch, through a Kowa 16-H, Tokina ATX 0.4 diopter and a Konica Hexanon 40mm, mostly wide open at f1.8.   http://www.flickr.com/photos/68917223@N05/sets/72157634273204895
  23. http://vimeo.com/68443110   This is my new graphic, in animated form. I created and animated it in PowerPoint (I've been animating in PowerPoint since elementary school). I then played the animation on my Dell 30" monitor and recorded the monitor with my GH2, Kowa anamorphic, Konica AR 40mm and Tokina diopter all on a tripod. Then I moved the monitor out of the scene and recorded various flares with a flashlight. Brought it all together in Final Cut Pro, set the flares as additive layers, and added some grain overlay effect. I think the outcome is something clean-cut but with a dash of organic mojo that is difficult to achieve with an all-digital animation. There's no faking those real flares!
  24. I made my first anamorphic purchase with a Kowa 16-H.  I am waiting for Redstan adapters and I wanted to get  some feedback on which taking lens would be ideal with my setup.   I've heard that anything below 80mm will vignetter due to the Kowa's 2x and the mk III sensor size.   For any mk ii / mk iii owners out there... what taking lenses are you using/recommend for your Kowa 2x?
