I just got this lens the other day and noticed that it makes a vey quiet, yet noticeable grinding sound when focusing manually. Is that normal? It also makes a noise when focusing automatically. I have the panasonic shotgun mic attached to the GH3 for audio recording and it definitely picks up the sound. Is my lens defective or is this normal for this lens? I don't notice it on my 17mm or 45mm, but haven't tested. Would love some direction on this. Andrew's post about the Hackintosh for editing RAW files got me thinking about how to approach an editing system for the GH3 I'll be using (once it finally ships to the US). I'm curious how much power and storage I would when shooting with a GH3. (Keep in mind I'm not thinking of a PC system, but open to the idea if someone feels they have great results). Would a Mac Mini with quad core and 8gb RAM suffice? And has anyone done any DIY upgrades to a Mac Mini that works well? I've been leaning towards a new Imac but can't stand the lack of adaptability and higher cost, which is why I was wondering if I could get away with a Mac Mini and getting my own monitor at a cheaper price. Tweeking a Mac Mini may be an exercise in stupidity I realize, but you can at least get into the guts and people seem to do various unauthorized upgrades, like putitng in an extra hard drive and such. But will this be worth it considering the cost? I assume a laptop would not be enough power but maybe not? Curious what others thought based on what you know about the GH3 and the file sizes and demands that will be required... Cheers, Dr. John

From what I understand the only image stabilization with the GH3 is through the lenses, specifically lenses made by Panasonic. Assuming this is true, I'm curious how people have fared with the GH3 when using legacy glass and/or non Panasonic lenses in regards to image stabilization. Just curious what people thought was wise/reasonable in how to maximize a stable image when shooting with the GH3. Obviously a tripod helps but was looking to see if anyone had thoughts on this issue.

Would a Century Anamorphic adapter with a 37mm mount work with a GH3? I'm unclear as to whether this goes between the camera and the "prime" lens, or after the prime lens?

Hey guys, So I'm running into a problem when trying to conform my 60p, 50Mbps footage, to 24p in Cinema Tools 4.5.1. Might be because of my version of the software, but has anyone else run into this issue? I have a shoot coming up and I really don't want to use AVCHD. Thanks. Any help is appreciated. Also, Cinema Tools keeps saying that my files have temporal compression. Not sure what that is. I ran the .mov files through 5DtoRGB first before importing into Cinema Tools.

Has anyone encountered a color shift to green when not looking at their GH3s back LCD perfectly straight? Screens tend to get darker when looking more from the side, but this shift to green is really distracting, at least for me...

Finally got my GH3 and found a quick fix for the loose card slot door. It's VERY easy. Circled is the actual contact point of the locking mechanism. These indentations on the metal arm slide over the door hinge when you close the door and hold it shut. Simply remove the metal piece with a screwdriver and give these little arms a slight bend towards where the hinge will be when re-attached. Just a VERY SLIGHT bend at the circled area is all you need - this photo was taken AFTER I bent mine. When re-attaching the piece, take care not to strip out the screw hole.

I've uploaded some test footage from the new Panasonic GH3. The first portion of the video contains fairly even lighting with tests from f2.8/ISO 200 - f16/ISO 6400. The second portion introduces a hot spot via a desk lamp. Test are from f4.0/ISO 200 - f22/ISO 6400. Gradation looks very good in the bright areas of the footage. Blacks are fairly consistent throughout. ISO 200 - 800 appears damn fine, as far as noise is concerned. ISO 1600 fairly good and easily workable. We plan to shoot a series of video motion portraits using a GH3 and wonder what is the best lens to use? We would like to shoot at somewhere between 50-80mm in 35-equiv. Thanks

Here is my test I did today. There are a few notes to be aware of: 1) There is moire evident when set at 0 (roof of the pavilion). At -5 there is none, although the compression of youtube introduces moire. 2) Excessive sharpening in post is akin to sharpening in-camera by re-introducing moire. Not only that but it also exacerbates banding as well. The last shot of the sunset, you can see a sort of "pulsing" wave above the sun. This is not present in either the 0 or -5 setting, although you can see some banding in the 0 setting. 3) There is a lot of noise at -5, but there's more detail too. Proper noise reduction will help. 4) Contrast isn't easy to fix. I made a bunch of other shots, however I wasn't able to match them. Never forget we're dealing with an 8 bit codec. You can grade the footage, but only so far. And trying to fix things in post could result in worse problems. The banding was especially surprising, and it looks worse in the ProRes version. I think it best to find the right compromise for the type of shooting you do. And you have to get your exposure and contrast as close to final version as possible. Just did some lens tests with the GH3 vs GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack. Information below: GH2 vs GH3 Night Lens Test Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 Hack, Vivid -2,-2,-2,-2 Panasonic GH3, Vivid -3,-5,-4,-5 Lenses used: Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 Canon FD 50mm F1.2L Canon FD 85mm F1.2L Canon EF 100mm Macro F2.8 Perspective is different even though I used them on the same tripod. GH2 is 1.86x sensor crop, GH3 is 2x sensor crop. In very dark situations the GH3 is noticeably brighter, about 2/3 of a stop. I tried to compensate by making the GH2 1 stop ISO brighter. But by doing so makes the GH2 have more noise and have "milky" blacks. Color correction is very difficult with the GH2 even with the hack. On top of my low light high ISO tests I also tested my Sankor Anamorphic 2x lens. One thing I really learned is that anamorphics need to be focused at a specific distance to get the desired effect. Of course I only realize this after I do this, so I'll try and do another test later. Focus is very difficult, next time I'll bring an external monitor. The 100mm Macro surprisingly was the most difficult to focus. Here are some notes: - EX TELE mode is much improved on the GH3. There is more detail and less noise, although it is still very noisy. Not sure I can call it "grain" but if you really need to use it you can. But I would still go with a prime over EX TELE mode, even if it is a great lens like the Leica 25mm. GH2 clearly is bad in EX TELE mode, worse in very low light - Detail is excellent for both cameras. I still think the GH2 has more but only by a little. Again focusing is critical. - GH3 clearly has more dynamic range and retains more details especially in the shadows. The last video you can see more tiles in the shadows at the left of the image. - GH3 can shoot more flat and retain more color detail too. The last video I upped the saturation to 150% to match the GH2. You can't go far at all with the GH2, it is so baked into the codec. - GH3 is 2/3 of a stop brighter at high ISOs. However the codec isn't great for low light. I think the 50Mbits IPB is better than the 72Mbits All-I for low light. Just the noise grain is better and easier to remove. In bright conditions they are about the same. I prefer the GH3 over the GH2 for usability and for the image. I'll still use my GH2s because they are still very stellar cameras. But I think there are many improvements in the GH3 that overall make it a better camera.

Finally put my GH3 through it's paces and I got my anamorphics too. I shot the local teen group EMKE Hawaii live at Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu's 25th Anniversary celebration. But to shoot all anamorphic, well you can call me crazy I guess. Shooting dual focus is no joke, and I really had to change my thinking in terms of zooming and framing. The videos below are from the middle of the set when I finally got a hang of it. Well sort of, some shots are still soft. I can say that I'm happy with the performance of the Sankor and Eiki 16D (pretty much the same lens). Both are sharp if focused correctly. The LA7200 I could never get good results past 50mm, so I just use it wide angle, in this case 17mm. Overall the GH3 works very well, and I think I have a good combination here. My question is about mixing footage specifically from Sony to Panasonic (or secondly Canon) cameras. In my experience each company has a color profile, and within a brand cameras tend to match decently out of the box. I am a Sony owner of an NX5U video camera and have had experience mixing footage with Canon videocameras and DSLRs. The colors do not match perfectly, but for my wedding clients it is passable. Does anyone have knowledge of how well pana + sony might mix? I'm wondering specifically how well the Sony NX5U might match with a panasoinc GH2/3 (used as a b-cam)? I'm considering purchasing either a Sony NEX series (NEX 6) or a GH2/3. But I don't want to have to color correct all my footage to match with my workhorse NX5U. Thanks, .David

Does anybody know how long the 'package' battery of the GH3 lives - how many hours when filming? The xtra battery grip is rather expensive so.... Thanxs for the effort!

I'm in a tricky situation. I have been saving for the last 6 months to buy a camera (about 3k) and am troubled about which one I really should pull the trigger on. I have been using purely Canon DSLR's for the past year by working for a friend filming and editing "cinematic" weddings as well as our first commercial work. For the past 4 months it has been enough for me to work full time on. We have used 5DmkII's and 60d's mostly with a full set up of L glass--all his. Now I want to own something for myself. I'm used to Canons but not terribly excited about their new tech out. I can borrow glass from him to start but plan to purchase some of my own later in 2013. I want to use this on small documentary work and some narrative shorts that I have been writing. Something I could use for work though is important. Can't justify 3k on just a hobby. My initial thoughts on cameras: -Need to be versatile and adaptable to different situations for Event Videography -Form factor is important. Less rigging the better. I shoot mostly on a monopod and try to get my subject to feel very comfortable. I don't like hiding behind a wall of cords and knobs. Also the more rigging the less creative I tend to be with shot angles as I feel too worn down by weight. -Unique. My one complaint with Canon and L glass is it just feels so sterile. Not much character in flares and things. -Stills are not important. -Needs to last me 2 years. Which camera fits my need? GH3, 6D, 5DmkIII, or BMCC? To me they each have a lot of ups and downs. There's alot of talk about the GH3 sensor size: whether it's multi aspect ratio or not and whether this matters at all. So, since I didn't see this posted anywhere else, I ask the only question that should matter to members of this forum: Is the gh3 sensor size still good for 2.66/ 2.35/ normal anamorphic and does it need to be hacked to shoot video in 4:3? -
I'm curious what you guys think. Since it looks like there is a distinct possibility that the GH3 will indeed be inferior in video quality, what will happen to our beloved GH2? A boom in demand? Will retailers quickly burn through their backstock, only to see prices on the secondary market climb higher and higher? Or will the mainstream simply push ahead and leave it forgotten to the past? Pending the actual delivered state of the GH3, will anyone here go out and pickup a backup gh2?
