My cameras and kit

1. Made a music video to my band.     https://vimeo.com/55679443   GH2 Vanilla hack   Panasonic Lumix 14-42 3.5-5.6 Canon 1.4 50mm FD
2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V3npOYaktw&feature=player_detailpage     This was my first time shooting with my new hack and I really liked the way it handled shadow, color and motion.   While this was a test in a way, it is also a little more than that becasue it includes mood, character and emotion.   Trey
3. Just thought I'd share this also on the anamorphic forum specifically. Gotta love the Kowa image!   http://vimeo.com/56519741
4. On top of my low light high ISO tests I also tested my Sankor Anamorphic 2x lens.  One thing I really learned is that anamorphics need to be focused at a specific distance to get the desired effect.  Of course I only realize this after I do this, so I'll try and do another test later.  Focus is very difficult, next time I'll bring an external monitor.  The 100mm Macro surprisingly was the most difficult to focus.  I think it has a much shallower depth of field than either of the FD 1.2L lenses.   http://youtu.be/U5Oh-IBFZyY   http://youtu.be/eL0HesvFrPc   http://youtu.be/zEk-7OEkVAU   http://youtu.be/ZaRwD_L0n-g   Out of all these tests it's clear that there are limitations with both cameras.  Here are some notes:   - EX TELE mode is much improved on the GH3.  There is more detail and less noise, although it is still very noisy.  Not sure I can call it "grain" but if you really need to use it you can.  But I would still go with a prime over EX TELE mode, even if it is a great lens like the Leica 25mm.  GH2 clearly is bad in EX TELE mode, worse in very low light - Detail is excellent for both cameras.  I still think the GH2 has more but only by a little.  Again focusing is critical. - GH3 clearly has more dynamic range and retains more details especially in the shadows.  The last video you can see more tiles in the shadows at the left of the image. - GH3 can shoot more flat and retain more color detail too.  The last video I upped the saturation to 150% to match the GH2.  You can't go far at all with the GH2, it is so baked into the codec. - GH3 is 2/3 of a stop brighter at high ISOs.  However the codec isn't great for low light.  I think the 50Mbits IPB is better than the 72Mbits All-I for low light.  Just the noise grain is better and easier to remove.  In bright conditions they are about the same.   I prefer the GH3 over the GH2 for usability and for the image.  I'll still use my GH2s because they are still very stellar cameras.  But I think there are many improvements in the GH3 that overall make it a better camera.
5. It is winter in Minnesota, and that means snow. There is nothing quite like the experience of a walk in the snow clad Minnesota forests. The soft snow and sharp cold winter air create a new extreme of quiet that can only really be experienced first-hand. The accompanying music can only hope to capture some of the mood. Shut out the hustle and bustle this holiday season for a relaxing 11 minute walk by the frozen Sunrise River behind my home.   http://vimeo.com/56519741
6. Finally put my GH3 through it's paces and I got my anamorphics too.  I shot the local teen group EMKE Hawaii live at Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu's 25th Anniversary celebration.  But to shoot all anamorphic, well you can call me crazy I guess.  Shooting dual focus is no joke, and I really had to change my thinking in terms of zooming and framing.  The videos below are from the middle of the set when I finally got a hang of it.  Well sort of, some shots are still soft.  I can say that I'm happy with the performance of the Sankor and Eiki 16D (pretty much the same lens).  Both are sharp if focused correctly.  The LA7200 I could never get good results past 50mm, so I just use it wide angle, in this case 17mm.  Overall the GH3 works very well, and I think I have a good combination here.   Wide Angle Shot - Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack, Panasonic 14-42mm kit lens @ 17mm, Panasonic LA7200 Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5, 1/80sec, Vivid (-2,-2,-2,-2)   Medium Shot - Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack, Canon FD 50mm F1.2L, Eiki 16D Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5, 1/80sec, Vivid (-2,-2,-2,-2)   Medium/Close-up Shot - Panasonic GH3, 24P 72mbit MOV, Panasonic 45-200mm lens, Sankor 16D Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5-5.6 (zoomed), 1/80sec, Vivid (-3,-5,-4,-5)   http://youtu.be/N2RsGEoWtkM   Edit: Sorry forgot to add that the LA7200 is 1.33x, the Sankor/Eiki are 2x anamorphics.  So I cropped the Sankor/Eiki to fit into a 2.35:1 space.  Sorry no super-wide look, I needed it to match the LA7200.
7. Hello,   I've spent weeks researching, and I've decided to turn to some aficionados.   First up, Camera: I've found that the GH2 is the best price/performance camera. Is this still true today, or are there better ones, such as the Olympus E-M5? Or, would it be best to wait -- do you think there will be anything extraordinary worth waiting for in the first few months of 2013?   Lastly, Lens: I've seen some people use old TV SD 2/3" Lenses, like B4 and C-Mount, etc. Are these worth it? I've heard that (for the most part), the IQ isn't very good, and there's a large amount of work (modifications) to get them to work.   Should I instead be looking at native lenses, like the Leica 25mm? Lots of people talk about anamorphic lenses, and the Voigtlander f/0.95. It seems like almost everyone raves about the Voigtlander, and while it seems expensive, is it truly worth it (price/performance) over say the Panny 20mm or even the Leica 25mm?   Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope this topic helps others as well! -Josh
8. Hi, All! This is just some of my "practice footage" from late night (early morning) walks around NYC with my trusty GH2, 37mm Mir, Kowa, Redstan clamps and Tokina 0.4 diopter. Hope you like it. http://vimeo.com/55186577
9. My question is about mixing footage specifically from Sony to Panasonic (or secondly Canon) cameras. In my experience each company has a color profile, and within a brand cameras tend to match decently out of the box.   I am a Sony owner of an NX5U video camera and have had experience mixing footage with Canon videocameras and DSLRs.  The colors do not match perfectly,  but for my wedding clients it is passable.    Does anyone have knowledge of how well pana + sony might mix? I'm wondering specifically how well the Sony NX5U might match with a panasoinc GH2/3 (used as a b-cam)?   I'm considering purchasing either a Sony NEX series (NEX 6) or a GH2/3.  But I don't want to have to color correct all my footage to match with my workhorse NX5U.   Thanks, .David
10. In the Tim Burton tradition, here's some Halloween fun at Christmas time...   http://vimeo.com/55190441   Stuff used:  GH2 + Century Optics + Nikkor 24mm F2 + FilmConvert
11. Strange problem   I own two GH2 camera bodies, one is about 1 year old, one is just a month old or so, various lenses and am shooting a documentary in Asia (Burma/Thailand/India). Both cameras are hacked with the Vitaliy patch – so as to achieve 44Mbit bitrate as well as the longer shooting time possible – up to two hours. I am having a very curious problem with BOTH my cameras, which I have find very puzzling. I am from the US and am wondering what to do as I have a couple more months of filming to do before heading home. I am about to sit a meditation course, so I have some time to have something shipped to me if neccesary.  Today - camera again working fine for short clip length of 5 min. or less....  no idea why.   FIRST OCCURANCE: The first problem cropped up when I was filming an interview and attached my new “small hd” monitor. After the interview was over, both files just dissappeared and did not show up when I uploaded the footage. Thankfully I use dual system sound recording, so I was able to retain the audio portion of the interview at least.   SECOND OCCURANCE: I was filming in Burma on a hot (but dry) day – on a farm – then at a temple.  I tried to take a long 30 min + shot and when I checked the camera it hadn't gotten the shot, had stopped and gone to sleep.  The file was also missing.  When I got back to the hotel – a huge portion of the day's shooting was just not there. I can see that 16gig of footage is on the SD card (Sandisk 95mb/s Extreme Pro 16gig/32gig) but only a few files show up (much smaller than 16 gigs). I have set aside the SD card in this case hoping that footage can be salvaged somehow.   THIRD OCCURANCE: I was filming another seated interview (with the same guy – perhaps this guy has some kind of magnetic pull??!) and again the file failed. Ie: When I stopped the camera it said: “This motion picture cannot be played”. I grabbed my second camera body, used the same lens, used a fresh 16gig SD card and asked for him to repeat the whole story which he did. Then mid filming, the camera suddenly stopped filming and started going to sleep. I pushed record again and at the end both files were unreadable with the SAME error message as my original GH2 saying: “this motion picture cannot be played”.   I did get the audio – thankfully. I have also set aside these two SD cards (from both cameras) in this case hoping again that the footage can be salvaged back home somehow.   Otherwise all shooting has been going very well... but at this point, I am beginning to get unnerved...   Questions:

Could the airport scanners have ruined my SD Cards? I have about 15 cards... so it would be a big loss, but perhaps in Burma??
Could both camera bodies fail in the exact same way due to the hack? Should I load a lower bitrate that is more stable, say 42Mbit?
Could both camera bodies fail due to extreme heat or humidity? Seems doubtful as the cameras are made in Asia afterall.
Is it worth ordering another camera body and having it shipped here? Or buying another GH2 in Bangkok? I have found Panasonic is really hard to find in Bangkok as Canon is so heavily marketed. But maybe I could find it, not sure.
If I buy another camera – is there a more stable hack? Or should I avoid the hack at this point?
Could the batteries be adversely affecting the camera? I use only panasonic batteries. I have about 9 batteries or so.
I am charging using a converted plug that converts the power from 240V to 110V – even though most of my devices are fine with 240V. I then plug in a US made power strip to this small converter and then charge up all my batteries etc.
12. Hi! I wanted to share with you our new channel (which has actually existed for some time now, but it's only now that we've officially launched it). It's a way for us to work on very short narrative videos every week and get to be a little more known on what we do, and specially sharing the stuff we've made and we'll keep on making. There's mostly old shorts by now, the majority of them being comedy and a few drama and action oriented, among others. Still, our strength as a group is comedy and these are some of the highlights (all of them feature English subs, so please enable them if you need to):   First, the promo for the channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfEdp5fH95o   Now this is a teaser we made for a contest, and it's a movie that we've been working on in several ways for a long time, but it still remains to be shot (this is a fake teaser, as was requested by this contest). Shot on the HV20!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG04H-8jjvU   And finally the only short we've shot on the GH2 so far, a kinda advertising spoof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rylbADFc4I   Oh, and this one is very old, it was mostly improvised and there are several "dead times" and other problems with it, but if you enjoy massacres you'll like it. :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nPnEPV1bGY   If you like what you see, please like, comment and subscribe to find out when we release new short films (every thursday is what we're planning), and if you can please give us a Like on Facebook as well! Down at http://www.facebook.com/DDDproducciones I hope you like this, and please tell me what you think!

14. Hi everybody! This's my first post on EOSHD, I'm very happy! My name 's Brice Rudelli filmmaker of south France. I work on a accesories line for dslr like GH2, rig, dolly, jib crane and others... I present to you my first test of ultra light jib crane, it's just a prototype. Heavy 14 pounds with the GH2 and lense. 16. I'm curious what you guys think. Since it looks like there is a distinct possibility that the GH3 will indeed be inferior in video quality, what will happen to our beloved GH2? A boom in demand? Will retailers quickly burn through their backstock, only to see prices on the secondary market climb higher and higher? Or will the mainstream simply push ahead and leave it forgotten to the past? Pending the actual delivered state of the GH3, will anyone here go out and pickup a backup gh2?
17. Here's a short longboarding video that my friends asked me to film for them earlier this summer. As always, I'd love some feedback! I'm still working on my grading skills with Resolve Lite, and on my grain effect, which Vimeo still doesn't seem to be capable of encoding properly. 18. Fair warning, there's some lens flaring in here but that wasn't the reason I shot this. Honest ;) http://vimeo.com/52214451 [background=rgb(244, 245, 247)]I was about to pack it in because I just didn't find anything interesting to shoot this night, testing out the Century Precision Optics anamorphic adapter with my F2 Nikkor 24mm taking lens, the widest, fastest prime I currently own. Then I heard a noise by the front door.[/background] [background=rgb(244, 245, 247)]Originally I thought it was a bat, since they're all over the Austin area at night. 19. Hi all, Wanted to show you guys my latest music video made for the dutch funkgroup Juicy Jones. Shot it on the last sunny day of the summer at a great location just outside of Utrecht. Great fun doing the shoot! I brought along a lot of gear but ultimately opted for simply filming handheld. Opened up my voigtlander between F0.95 and F4 most of the time (using an ND fader) and deliberately tried to overexpose and let the sun flare to get that dreamy summersday vibe. Pretty happy with the result! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTqP_enLUl8 and check out a fun little prologue we made as a lead-in to the release (subtitled). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmKoVy1_C7A cheers!
20. Take a look at my last work to date. Lot of work on this one ! I shot 720p50 with shutter 1/100 with voigtlander 25mm and olympus 12mm. Thanks for watching.
21. My crusade against color banding on the GH2 continues. The Flowmotion hack (v2.02) minimizes banding as well or better than any hack I have tried, but I still get unusable shots from time to time. Today, I used FCP7's log and transfer to import a single clip with banding issues. Then I used 5DtoRGB to process the same problem clip and exported every possible combination to see if there was a magical setting that would stop color banding altogether. There isn't. But somewhat unsurprisingly, ProRes 4444 / Full Range / ITU-R BT.601 seems to be a significant improvement. Here are the settings: Andrew has posted about using these settings (or with ProRes 422 at least) to preserve color information, but it seems to have an effect on banding as well. To see for yourself, you can go to my photo album on this site ( http://www.eoshd.com...anding-problem/ ) and download the screen grabs. For best results, I recommend viewing them in rapid succession in a program like Preview like this: The only downsides are that the files are about twice as large as good old ProRes 422, and it takes MUCH longer than FCP7's log and transfer window.
22. Hi guys, I did some test shooting in lowlight and high ISO on my GH2, nothing scientific, just pushing the camera. I noticed a strange dark pattern on the lower half of my footage on high ISO settings. Exactly the same darker line as this guy gets: https://vimeo.com/19563762 Sometimes it's visible, sometimes not, at ISO 2500 or lower it disappears. Is it a faulty sensor or normal behaviour in low light? I use the EOSHD Unified 88Mbit hack.
23. Hi, I'm new to DSLR and HD DSLR photo shooting. Up until now I've being taking HD video with a Sanyo (now Panasonic) HD-2000 - a Full HD camcorder which allegedly can do stills (not good ones..). At the time I had a hard time choosing between the Sharp and the Canon 550D but the fact that I was interested primarily in Video I chose the Sanyo. Over time I accessorized it and even built a DOF adapter for NIKON lens. Now it's time to move on and I feel it's time to revisit the DSLR scene.. (you know DOF, movie style).. I've read a lot of reviews and I pretty much narrowed it down to the GH2 when I stumbled across the reviews for the Sony Alpha A57 or A37. I hope I will not raise hell with the following questions, I would like to kno why not choose Sony Alpha A57 over the GH2? Assuming that I will be 70%-60% videographer and 30%-40% photographer. It seems that for the same amount of money you get with Sony better built camera, larger sensor, good continues autofocus, larger selection of original lenses, much better back screen and higher resolution for stills. I've big hands and I spoke today with a former GH2 owner who complaint that the GH2 was on the "too small" side for him. Thoughts? Ideas?
