My cameras and kit

1. Take a look at my last work to date. Lot of work on this one ! I shot 720p50 with shutter 1/100 with voigtlander 25mm and olympus 12mm. Thanks for watching.
2. Hello everyone, I'm relatively new here considering my post count, but I've been reading these forums for quite a long time now and I'm at the brink of buying a Panasonic GH2. So first of all, which kit to buy? I think I will use this camera mainly for run and gun docu/event shoots (low-light?!), but I like to do some pseudo-artistic hobby shoots from time to time as well. I thought of these options; 1. GH2 with 14-140mm kit and a Voigtländer 25mm. 2. GH2 body (or with the 14-42mm, as there's not much of a difference in price) with a Rokinon/Samyang 24mm and 35mm cine lens. Or should I wait for a longer focal length cine lens as 24 and 35mm do not make such a huge difference for a starter kit, right? Both kits end up being somewhat in the same price range, but I'm a little bit concerned with investing a lot of money in a M43 lens collection, that's why I added option 2. I also like the Cine-versions of the Rokinon lenses, as they've got click-less aperture and follow-focus gears (I already have a Gini rig with Follow Focus). With the Voigtländer being a F0.95 lens and the Rokinon a T1.4, is it a night and day difference in lowlight? (If you'll pardon the pun and ignore the lowlight performance of the GH2 in general). Second question, filters. Should I buy a 77mm variable ND (with step-up rings of course) or should I invest in a mattebox with 4x4 filters. Which of these two options will bring me longterm value for money and convenience? What are their pros and cons? Well, thanks for reading. Jon
3. Hey all, Here's my first music video shot with the Panasonic GH2. I've done several with the 60d, and working with the GH2 was a serious step up. Such crisp images! :) Numerous vintage primes were used for various scenes, as well as a Glidecam HD1000, and even my Kowa Anamorphic for a few of the "sun shots" although I kept the image squeezed. This one was pretty tough to edit, I could only go four about 4 hours at a time before becoming too queasy. Still though, I think it turned out pretty good. FWIW, the audio mix was by Fredrik Nordstrom & Henrik Udd. If you're into metal that might mean something :)
4. It's the eleventh hour for the GH2, but it will still be a few months before I have its replacement in my hands so I am still trying to get the best possible performance out of it. And I'd still like to hang onto it as a B-cam, but not until I work some issues out. I did a full-range ISO test of my GH2 with the Flowmotion 2.02 settings, starting at 12800 and working my way down to 160. I did this after reading a little more about the GH2 ISO bug. Initially, I had read that if you wanted to use ISOs 320, 640 or 1250, you had to switch the camera on and first go to any higher ISO, and then back to one of these three to minimize noise. Then I did some more reading on Personal-View and apparently what you want to do is go to the next ISO increment up, and then back down to the desired setting (so if you want ISO 320, go to ISO 400, then back to 320; if you want 640, go to 800, then back to 640). This seemed to result in a MUCH cleaner image than my initial tests with the first image. The footage is pretty usable up to ISO 1250, at least with the Flowmotion hack. What really surprised me was this: ISO 160 Flowmotion 2.02 Noise enhanced for visibility 500% crop ISO 320 Flowmotion 2.02 Noise enhanced for visibility 500% crop This tells me that working around the ISO bug as I have talked about above, ISO 320 is actually much cleaner than 160. In fact, it's the cleanest ISO (at least with this hack on my camera). Thoughts?
5. Can anyone tell me what is causing the horizontal banding at the top of the wall outside of the bedroom in these two shots? I was testing a steady cam today and noticed my Gh2 (24p, flowmotion hack) was showing these horizontal bands along the top. Yes, I've had trouble with the already much discussed High ISO/Underexposed area (mine shows up as low as 400 ISO) and thought I would try the same work around...shoot at a shutter speed of 30. Didn't help, the first photo was with a SS of 30, the second is with a SS of 50. The banding looks different, but is clearly there on both. Part of me is hoping it has to do with the light coming in from the windows and reflecting off the lens...but I don't think that's it. Anyone had anything similar. Getting REALLY frustrated with all the crap that keeps popping up trying to shoot with this camera. Every time I think I'm getting used to the work arounds, something else comes up. I REALLY hope panasonic has read some of these forums and correct all of this banding issue in the GH3....it really makes the camera almost unusable in any kind of professional situation. Sigh. BTW...the pics are frame grabs from video...not still photos.
6. Could anyone tell me please if compatible batteries will work ok with the Panasonic GH2 with the latest firmware installed? I heard somewhere that Panasonic blocked the use of third party batteries with one of their firmware upgrades and I wondered if this information is correct? Is anyone using the compatible batteries from 7dayshop.com?
7. Hi everyone, I have a chance to pick up a Panasonic GH1 body for $350 (US). I already have lenses from my other cameras so I'll just use an adaptor. I'm wondering what the major differences are between the GH1 and GH2? Is it still a viable choice? From what I've gathered, the color is a little less saturated and it's not as good in low light. Any other features that I might miss from the GH2? Also, I noticed that there are not as many patches available for it. Is that just because the GH2 cut off the GH1 patch development or is it because the GH1 isn't as hackable? Thanks for you help guys, I really appreciate it!
8. I finally got some Anamorphic footage, rather than just tests. Here's my footage of EMKE Hawaii performing at Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu. I only have 2 anamorphics (waiting for #3) so the I faked it by making the 5dmkIII super shallow DOF. Not the best option, but it fits in just fine. Please enjoy! 9. This trip cost me a GoPro. I didn't have an underwater housing and thought it could survive a couple splashes...nope. Luckily the footage survived.Awesome trip, though. We rented a Catamaran and circled the island, which is surprisingly barren outside the town of Avalon. It's about a 4 hr journey from Long Beach by boat. http://vimeo.com/47936990
10. Andrew's review from a while back: http://www.eoshd.com...age-full-review If anyone is interested: http://www.ebay.com/...6#ht_617wt_1367
11. Hey guys, GH2 owner.. I have seen Rokinon's 7.5mm Fisheye they have for m43'rds and then I saw their 85mm F14 telephoto lens made for 4/3rds (on my wish list) for $300!! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/769411-REG/Rokinon_85M_O_85mm_f_1_4_Aspherical_Lens.html So I decided to take a look at their site and find out they have some also a 24mm F1.4 lens for $800.. I know its not as popular as the Voig F0.95 http://www.rokinon.com/product.php?id=191 Furthermore, they even have CINE lenses coming soon, including a 8mm HD Fisheye T lenses http://www.rokinon.com/product.php?id=206 and 35mm T1.5 CINE lens for Canon (for now hopefully).. http://www.rokinon.com/product.php?id=202 under $600 !!!!!! deal or no deal?? Wanted to get other people feedback about Rokinon and their come up with lens for both photographers and now cinematographers...
12. Shot this little doc promoting my band's upcoming release. Shot on my GH2 with the EOSHD Unified hack, mostly at 6400-12800 ISO. Internet compression kills me, but I still like how it came out. Check it!
13. Hi, I have a blog with self-hosted videos. One of the main functions of the blog is to be able to view videos on a mobile device like an iPhone 4s. I currently use the h.264 format with the "iPhone widescreen" preset on Adobe Encoder, which has the benefit of a small file size but the images tend to be muddy. Anyone have any export settings presets or tips for exporting videos to be viewed on mobile devices like an iPhone 4s or Android device? I am looking for a custom set-up that has better video image quality than the "iPhone widescreen" preset mixed with a reasonable file size for medium to fast load-up time for a 3G mobile network connection. My content: - I shoot all of the videos with the GH2 hacked high bitrate setting; - All of my videos are about 30 seconds to two minutes long, so encoding a 200-300MB file to around 30-40MB file size. Looking forward to any advice you have!!
14. My name is Taylor, im a student filmmaker in Sedona and have just recently switched to cinematography as my major. This is my first time posting on this site, however i have been following for a while (i own the GH2 shooters guide and anamorphic shooters guide). If i am posting in the wrong place, feel free to bump/ let me know how to fix. I am a new owner of the GH2 and have hacked it with the anamorphic hack in the anamorphic shooters guide. It works fantastic when i dont have a external monitor plugged in, shooting in beautiful 2.66:1 with an incredible bitrate. However, when i plug in my DP6 the gh2 automatically switches out of mjpeg (4:3) and into variable movie mode (16:9). Is there some setting i am missing? If anyone has any advice id appreciate it!
15. Hi I'm shooting a short over 4 days in England around October and looking to hire an Iscorama 36? The budget doesn't justify buying an Iscorama (plus they're a buggar to find!) Are there any owners in England who would rent their Isco 36 and clamp out to me? Also, out of curiosity, would people prefer the GH2 (Anamorphic hack with lomos?) setup or 7D (with Isco 36?) We have the option but can't find many good examples of the GH2 ana hack? Many thanks, James
16. Hey guys.. I need to hook up with some Panasonic buddies!!!! I have no body in the area who loves and shoots video like me. Its dead over here as far as filming and cinematography community.. 17. Recently Singapore just opened the new gardens by the bay. And I decided to take my new GH2 for a spin. http://vimeo.com/46205226
18. Hello everyone, I first heard of the gh2 and anamorphic lenses on this blog and I got curious. After reading and reading I finally decided to take the leap and ordered one. Although I'm not new to images from my post-production trade I am new to film making and it's fascinating. I'll share the videos of my journey in this thread, there is a complete rundown of each vid on vimeo if you are interested. I should get my anamorphic clamps and diopter next week, can't wait to get them and finally try my anamorphic lens! :) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts thanks http://vimeo.com/46627432 http://vimeo.com/46683852

20. I had this cage made for me by Berkey System. It uses mostly off the shelf parts except for the custom top plate and a modified baseplate that allows for the use of a Arca Swiss styled mounting system for the camera. The main drive behind this was that I wanted a cage that would allow me to easily remove the camera and use my GH2 for Photography work as well as videography work, or so that I could use the bare camera in a more discreet way if need be. To accomplish all of that, there were some compromises, but overall I'm happy with it because it checks the following boxes:

Camera secured at both mounting screw and hotshoe to prevent flex and rocking when using a follow focus.
Ability to quickly and easily remove the camera from the cage incorporating an Arca Swiss clamp inside the cage which would also solve my next wish:
Absolutely no camera twisting! I hate camera twisting!
Easy access to all camera controls, ports, battery door, etc while camera is mounted in the cage.
All holes spaced to the ARRI and RED standard to allow use of professional quality accessories.
A built in rail block that mounts the cage at the correct height above the rails and prevent the camera and the cage from rotating on the rail block. Have I mentioned I hate camera rotation?
A cage that will allow me to upgrade my camera without having to buy a new cage.
What do you guys think? There's more pics and more thorough write up on my blog: http://tvpglabs.com/2012/06/08/my-new-upgradeable-gh2-cage-from-berkey-system/
21. Hi all, First of all thanks for taking your time to read my post. Here is my situation I have hacked GH2 that I use for shooting short narrative films and I also intended to shoot a feature on it. Now with the appearance of the Black Magic Cinema camera I m considering selling my GH2 and buying the BM camera, however I really love what I get from my liitle GH2. Now first question is would this be a smart decission, or should I keep shooting on my GH2. In case that my finances improve drastically I m considering buying a BM camera without selling my GH2, which leads to my second question - would I be ablr to shoot with these 2 cameras a serious narrative film in a 2 camera set-up situation? If yes, than that is something to seriously think about. And my last question is would I be able to use my LOMO OKC 18 lenses and my Carl Zeiss 85mm 1.4 on BM camera, and if yes what kind of adapter would I need? I simply love these lenses and practically shoot 99% of my stuff with them (I still need to save up for 14 mm and 35mm Semyang as I m having problems with focus pulling on some shots with my LOMO's). Anyway, thanks a lot on your responses. I m looking forward to hear some suggestions. Cheers!

Apparently a lens is needed though. How about that? These are kind of two separate questions, but what would be best for my needs and then what would be cheapest but workable? My research seems to point me to the Voigtlander 25mm, but it's a little pricey for me right now. I plan on getting the cheap kit lens (14-42) just for the purposes of learning the camera, but it seems the kit lenses aren't quite going to deliver me that nice shallow DOF look I'm hoping for. Any budget options that'll do the trick for me, putting it on a tripod and getting close up, blurry background, b-camera interview beauty stuff? Thoughts? Much appreciated. -Noah

24. Dear Andrew, Dear All, I am one of these fans visiting EOSHD.com every day, a couple of times and checking every update. So finally after purchasing my GH2 I decided to register to the EOSHD forum. Just finished university and now have some time to film with my brand new GH2. I am living in Germany and bought my GH2 from a Germany onlineshop. The serial number starts with WE1HA. Now as I have rad the EOSHD GH2 shooters guide and went out filming I discovered one really sad GH2 bug which I found out is well known. The horizontal darker line ind footage shot over ISO1000 and underexposed situations. Panasonic is aware of the problem and many users complain about this problem. http://vimeo.com/17281822 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/693/gh2-showing-fixed-darker-bandstripe-20-pixels-high-across-footage/p1 If you read all these posts you'll see, that each GH2 seems to have a problem with this issue. Andrew Reid, from reading sooooo many of your posts and articles I know you have some contact to Panasonic. Don't you think it is time to ask Panasonic to solve this problem and take back all the thousands of defective GH2s? I am so sad I just discovered this after my 2 weeks return policy expired. Now I have to live with this but maybe Panasonic could work around the problem? Any chance you could ask Panasonic for an official statement? Kind regards, Vincent
25. Hi guys, writer/director here working on getting my first feature up and running. I entered this comp with only 9 hours before the deadline, primarily, as when I saw the judges, I knew it was real people who make and live cinema and not funding bodies and other lack of film education types, who were going to see them. I shot it on the GH2 to test what I have always believed in, which is, that when it comes to any kind of artistic or creative expression, it is what you have to say and not what you say it on or with that counts, and nothing else, and I knew others had made full blown productions with full crews, budgets, locations and everything, so I was slightly taken aback when the judges: Paul Greengrass (Bourne films) Jeremy Bolt (Producer Event Horizon, Resident Evil films) and editor Eddie Hamilton (X-Men: First Class, Kick Ass) were unanimous as picking it as the winner!!! Here are a couple of their comments: Judges comments included Eddie Hamilton (X-Men editor)… ‘Very cinematic, excellent use of camera, composition, editing and music… a tour de force, and for me the clear winner.’ Producer Jeremy Bolt (Resident Evil Franchise) commented… ‘Subtle and visually bold. Made you think and the boys performance was very believable it was understated. I also thought editing, cinematography and music were very strong.’ Would love to know what you all think. Less than 2 mins so nothing heavy. For me the GH2 totally rocks for all the reasons that Andrew has been tirelessly cheerleading it for, I am a guerilla filmmaker and don't like the time and wasted energy associated with waiting around on film sets to do this and setting up that, ok maybe if you are spending someone elses money, however I just like to shoot and get on with it. I am really wanting to shoot my feature in exactly the same way I made this and with this camera. So am always looking for likeminded, cine-literate, passionate about film... filmmakers. Best wishes to all and rememember if you can imagine it, you can do it... the mantra of Stanley Kubrick, who is GOD, that would be Greatest of Directors and my favourite for the integrity to the purpose of what you do and how to accomplish it :-)
