It looks like some Nokia Lumia owners are going to be in for a 4K treat. It doesn't seem like it is a continuous recording mode but if you can do 10 second clips that's all I need. http://www.wpcentral.com/lumia-denim-firmware-announced-microsoft Nice to see a phone company expanding video features through a free firmware update. It's amazing that a phone that launched for less than $100 on contract last year will get 4k for free. I wish Apple would take a page from Microsoft's book instead of making people pay through the nose for basic features tons of other phones have. I mean am I to understand you have to pay $300 ON CONTRACT just to get the only iphone that has an HD screen? Terrible. And still no microSD expansion slot? -

Hi all, I'm looking to get more into video- some short films, some video work- nothing serious, and I don't need the absolute best quality. I just want a decent bitrate, minimal rolling shutter/moire/etc., decent low light performance, etc.- something that's good enough where the quality of my videos are distracting because they're bad enough to be noticeable to the average person. The GH4 seems like a huge step up in video compared to the GH3, but It's like twice as expensive, and I can't see myself using 4K (I'm assuming that would require a more powerful computer to edit, hard drives to deal with the extra data, better memory cards- all things I'm not willing to invest in at this point). I will probably stick with 1080p, maybe one step up, but definitely not 4k. Given, I'm weighing my options between the GH4, GH3, and GX7 (which I read is actually better than the GH3 for video). I was considering the Blackmagic pocket, but there's too many quirks for me to want to deal with. I would jump on the OMD EM5, but the quality isn't there. I hate to buy a camera during these years of seemingly the most growth the camera industry will see for video, but this summer I must upgrade. Any advice/words or other models I haven't mentioned? The 1080p image quality gains from a 4K GH4 file are well documented, but I've got a basic workflow question to extract the maximum IQ from my 4K files destined for FullHD output: I've got a basic two cam interview I shot with the GH4. I'm wondering how to maximize the extra information when outputting to 1080p. Will I have equal sharpness and color information gains if I edit on a 1080p timeline and output to 1080p as if I edit on a 4K timeline and output to 1080p? Is it the same effect in the end? -
Hello, This year started with some new 4k consumer cameras releases and 4k projectors, TVs etc. I'm not an expert, but it seems that this 4k thing is not close to become the standard yet. It took years to get 1080p RAW and once that it hit the market, they released the 4k, but it seems rushed. Now, I'm writing a script for a feature, which I'd like to shoot with my own gear. For that I am planning on buying a BMPCC+speedbooster. That is a major upgrade from my T2i. My question is: Is it a bad investment to get the BMPCC now, or is it wiser to wait and see what the market brings in mid 2014? Thank you

In reading and responding to this post please keep in mind I am an amateur who only makes very little money shooting stock video. I mostly want this camera for hobby purposes. With the march to 4k in full swing (ie GH4, Sony FDR-AX100, BMPC 4k, Galaxy Note III, etc) where does that leave the BMCC? Is the BMCC a reasonable camera to buy used now or should people wait for more price reductions? I have always been averse to owning Black Magic cameras. Their lack of pedigree in the camera field and the delays and bugs scared me off. But at this stage if I could pick up a BMCC with Resolve for $1,500ish is this something wise to do? The reason I ask is of all the new wave of cameras to lauch in the last couple of years the BMCC seems like the cheapest to get up and running. I could use my ef lenses on it and SSDs have come down in price. $1,500 is still a lot of money but I could shoot the camera on day one just by adding an SSD. I don't need to shoot for hours. I mostly shoot 10-30 second clips. So there is not a pressing need for an external battery. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

I fed mic-level output from a Sound Devices USB Pre 2 (standalone mode, has the same preamps/circuit as the 7xx recorders) into the GH4 set to -12dB mic gain (uploaded as 4K):

My first test of using the GH4 with Cinema 4K setting at 24hz. Also my first test with my "new" Iscorama 36. I had a hard time adapting it to a rails system, but it's OK for now. I finally understand what it's like to rack focus, as well as how sharp it is. I have to do more tests though to see what I really prefer. I like the SLR Magic a LOT for run n gun, and it is just so easy, and I really don't need diopters. However it really isn't as sharp as the Iscorama. The other option is my Sankor 2x but that's way more bulky and heavy although just as sharp wide open as the Iscorama. I used diopters in this video, that's how I got close focus. +0.5, +1 and +2. I'll do a test using the SLR Magic Achromat +0.33 and +1.33 later. The fllter thread is different though, the Iscorama being 72mm and the SLR Magic 77mm.

I am new here and to 4K. I just got a GH4 and I edit in FCPX 10.1.1. Is there a tutorial available that explains the nuances and workflow for efficient editing of 4K for a 1080 output? Thank you Kent

Our first shoot with the GH4 in 4K, edited and delivered in 4K (everything played in real-time in PPro CC ("Full") during editing; 2010 12-core 24GB MacPro and Quadro 5000). Watch in full screen if using a >HD monitor (1440p and 2160p available): Audio recorded with the FS700 (Audio Technica BP4029 stereo shotgun (Mid+Side)). Close ups with FS700. Background plate shot with GH4, JPG, full auto. Keyed with Ultra Key. Since many of the items were also green, I had to perform a bit of post work using Track Matte keys to mask off areas from the green screen keyer. A couple areas with motion not masked off and those go transparent (can be fixed by animating a Track Matte key). Could use a bit more color work- ran out of time. Everything done 100% in PPro CC- no round-tripping. File rendered to a custom profile at 3840x2160 32-40Mbit/s 2-pass H.264 MP4.

I've been trying to edit some 4K GH4 sample footage in Premiere Pro CS6 and it continually crashes my system. I'm using a 2.6 GHz i7 Macbook Pro with 8GB of ram on Mountain Lion. I realize that's not the most robust system, but considering what some other people have said they're using it doesn't seem like I should be having the amount of issues I am. I can drop the 4K footage into a 1080 timeline just fine, but as soon as I scale the footage to the frame size - or sometimes once I try and play it back - Premiere says "Sorry, a serious error has occured that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shutdown. We will attempt to save your current project." I get the same error if I try and create a sequence with the native resolution. I don't even get the chance to change my playback quality before it crashes. I can never open this project again without immediately getting this error. Premiere will prompt me to save a copy of the project and use that from then on, but this copy opens to the same error. I've seen this error on my system before, but maybe like once or twice in the last 2 years. I've searched around on the internet for other people with this issue, and they seem to be everywhere, but I can't find an adequate solution. Has anyone else had this problem, 4K footage or not? If I'm an idiot and this has been answered plenty of other places, please link me. Super annoying thing that's making me doubt the GH4 right now... definitely don't want to have to upgrade my comp or to CC just to see if that resolves the issue...

I just got back from a five-day trip to Bangkok: it's hot as hell this time of year! I thought I'd pick up a cheap drive while I was there, so I went to the Fortune IT Mall (it's supposed to be more relaxed than the notorious Pantip Plaza). The mall has four floors devoted to everything in electronic goods, including cameras, computers and peripherals. Although I'd been planning to pick up a WD My Passport Pro 4TB drive (after watching Blunty's effusive video), I since learned that the Seagate Backup Plus Fast 4TB has faster performance at a price somewhere between 35-40% cheaper. It turns out that the drive is actually more expensive in Thailand than in the States, but it's still a great value. I am currently copying the contents of one of my Buffalo Mini Station Extreme drives: the Seagate is around the same size, only thicker and quite a bit heavier. It also gets quite toasty when in action (50 degrees!) - but it is silent, and I can't feel any vibration. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for speedy, inexpensive, bus powered storage. Anyhow, I was wondering how many readers would be interested in a sticky topic about the following (pursuant to Andrew's approval) 1. Storage solutions Now that you're shooting 4K, you probably realize you'll need faster and larger drives. While I was at the mall in Bangkok, I discovered that storage can be sexy! I also learned that RAID isn't just for professionals (sorry, I'm a novice). One drive I'm especially interested in, which hasn't been released yet, is LaCie's Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 - it can achieve read speeds of over 1375MB/s, so when hooked up to my rMBP, it would be twice as fast as the internal drive. Of course, it will cost half as much as the laptop! 2. Color grading So many readers talk about a cinematic look and how to achieve it. This sticky could be where readers post their grading breakdowns or ask for advice, talk about LUTs, etc. Reader ruanlotter contributed an excellent basic >tutorial that could be the start of more tutorials as well. 3. 4K News I just learned that South Korea has supposedly created the first dedicated 4K channel, called UMAX. Would a sticky with discussion about 4K news and events, along with analysis interest readers?

A "tech geek's" comment inspired by the Sony A7S release... I appreciate the quality of codec/bitrates of the new Panasonic GH4 (there are several first examples available online), the maturity and all-round versatility of the system, as well as its plethora of great improvements (like the “depth-for-defocus†contrast-detection AF). However, there is one thing on GH4 I have never found to be the most elegant technical solution. Namely, it is rather high megapixel score (16MP). I do suppose for a motion-stills/video oriented micro 43 camera the optimal resolution would be 12+MP. The arguments are straightforward: 1. 12+MP on a micro 43 sensor is a “native†resolution for the academy DCI 4K standard (4096×2160 pixels). On GH4, DCI 4K is supported in the crop mode (x2 vs x2.3), owing to the higher horizontal resolution of its 16MP sensor (4608 pixels). To note: x2 vs. x2.3 crop is noticeably less pleasant for a video maker (!). 2. Higher continuous shooting rates for stills: 30% speed-up in the continuous shooting does matter (!). 3. Slightly lower ISO noise (and slightly higher dynamic range) in the video and pictures’ modes. For the motion-stills/video-oriented cameras (1) and (2) is much more important than extra 4 MP in stills. B.t.w, I lived a quite happy stills’ live with my G2 – just be thorough with composition and no need to crop :). There are well-known successful examples of the strategy (“less MP = more speed/IQâ€) in the DSLR world (Nikon D4 (16MP/FF), Canon 1D (18MP/FF)… And now – “suddenly†appeared at NAB, the first 4K mirrorless full-frame Sony A7S. As compared to the GH4, A7S has lower bandwidth/processing power (50 Mbps vs. 200 Mpbs for 1K, UHD (3840×2160) vs. DCI resolution, 4:2:2/8 bits vs. 4:2:2/10 bits etc.) with the advantage in the high ISO of course. Note that A7s has also 14 bit RAW for stills. However I would rather applaud Sony for limiting the sensor resolution by 12MP. It is a very harmonic engineering solution for the motion-oriented hybrid camera. Dreaming forward about 4K on micro 43… I would like to see two lines of Panasonic sensors: 16MP for the stills-oriented cameras and 12MP for the motion-oriented ones. For that I would gladly pay extra. Apparently, Panasonic thought about it more than me. Sadly, they do not follow this path likely due to the high financial burden for maintaining the two lines of the "perfect" sensors on one consumer’s products line. This is in contrast to Sony which always seem to have enough cash to sit on several sits (e.g. A7, A7R, A7S, NEX, ... )… PS I do not intend to compare 4K/micro 43 vs. 4K/mirrorless-FF as systems themselves here: the pro/cons are be basically the same as for the stills’ counterparts. I've been holding onto ~$1400ish waiting to hear on the GH4, but with no new information on price or release in a number of weeks I'm starting to look at other options. If it isn't for sale until late April, fine, but tell us! I'm content to wait if I can know how much I need and when I need it by. Have I missed something? Has Panasonic said when they're announcing/what the holdup is? I've hear sometime around the 14th rumored on forums, but it just seems to be conjecture. Anyone have any insight?

Hi guys its time for me to buy a new camera i did have black magic 2.5k but sold it to buy 4k. I am thinking to go with BM 4k since the price is right but i am thinking to wait until end of summer before jumping in because i am not sure if other companies will come out with something better for same price and BM 4k is Canon EF Compatible Lens Mount does this mean i can only use canon lens because i have some old lenses that i use like nikkor on 60d with adapter can i attach adapter to BM4k? What would you guys do? Thanks guys

Dear Panasonic. :) This new GH4 seems great and I bet that many of us indie folk and others thank you for listening. Since you may soon find out with strong sales of the GH4 it's smart bussiness to listen. The next camera you could and should do is an improved version of GH4 but with more video work in mind. Make it so that it does not have a handle but a handle is removable and comes in the package as standard. Then make a link that enables two of the cameras to be synchronized via cable or connector for 3D-work. This would mean the camera needs to have the battery under (accessible from back wall) or behind the screen and accessible from bottom. -Use the newer SD card system. -Add higer bit rates for 4K .. (100 is not alot GH4) -and more bith depth. . 12 bit would be good. (perhaps only via sata connector) -add higher frame rate. 48FPS at least for 4K .. would be great -Add an external sata connector so users can record to an SSD if the high FPS + bitdepth require too much from the SD cards. And to top it off.. If you can make a new sensor 8 K resolution or 4 K which dimensions conform to video work first and for photography second. A pure 4K / 6K resolution video sensor in micro four thirds mount would be sweet and likely less noisy.
