Philip Bloom is - by his standards: unusually - outspoken on the R5:

I've followed him for years and I've never seen him so damning on a mainstream camera release. I remember him ripping on a very niche Fran 8K but that product was total garbage and the company went bust. But this is supposedly Canon's flagship. Flagship bust more like.

All the signs point to it being unintentionally crippled this time.

It's astounding how broken the R5 is.

Philip Bloom has made similar observations.

It's now starting to emerge that the initial 'reviews' from the paid Canon shills and the affiliate link brigade glossed over how bad the R5 is in terms of overheating and its general stability.

Now that the camera is out there in the hands of objective reviewers rather than the YT canboys or those with a vested interest the truth is coming out. It doesn't look pretty.

It will be interesting to see results of Andrews tests, but at this point it's looking quite scandalous that Canon would release such a defective product with such deceptive marketing.

  3. The canboys object for one reason only - because people are saying negative things about their 'special one'.

Would they be objecting if it was all positive? Of course not. They'd be joining in.

They just want to shut down anything other than the Canon party line.

Andrew has created a forum where different opinions can be aired. This IME is reasonably rare in photography forums which can be the very definition of manufacturer party line echo chamber. If people want that (and it appears some here do) you have many other options.

  4. Certain people want to shut down any rightful criticism of Canon. Why? Because of course they are not so closet canboys.

The ‘argument’ that Canons very clear failings aren’t as bad as something worse isn’t an argument.

This is a camera forum, to discuss cameras. If you want to discuss geo politics there’s other forums for that.

This was arguably Canons biggest launch for a decade and they failed. Spectacularly. It’s not surprising people wish to discuss or rightly criticise them for their failing.

Debate stoppers reveal one thing, their blatant canboyism.

Fans in technology is something we've all become use to and whilst they can fail, I think they do more good stopping other componets failing.  I'd feel happier with one installed than not.

I'd rather have a fan and have them cut in when needed.

My MacBook and iMac have them and they only kick in when needed which isn't that often, usually when mega rendering. They just give you a bigger window to operate in safely.

We are only a few weeks away from “5 AWESOME WAYS to KEEP YOUR R5 from OVERHEATING 🔥🔥 🚫” and “My TOP 10 TIPS for Shooting 8K RAW on the EOS R5!”.

    With tips like:

    1. Buy a $400-800 external recorder for your $4,000 mirrorless photo camera.
    2. Take your battery out.
    3. Take your CFexpress card out. MAke sure to leave your SD card door OPEN!
    4. After shooting take off your lens and expose your sensor
    5. Avoid hot weather
    6. Don’t take photos before video
    7. Bring a second body, $2,600 R6 or another $4,000 R5 and swap them.
    8. Realize you paid $4,000 for another EOS R...again. LOL!

But its Canon...if any other company released a camera like this they would be out of business fast and all the Canon apologist would be saying the same thing: “Unreliable piece of junk!, Not professional gear!, I wouldn’t dare shoot a a job where I was getting paid with that camera”.

See my list above for 7 AWESOME WAYS to KEEP your R5 from OVERHEATING!!!

The fanboyism around Canon is quite remarkable. You're obviously joking about those tips but we all know those vids will start appearing.

The 'workarounds' are increasingly laughable but the canboys simply cannot accept that their beloved Canon has failed. They totally fell for the hype. I've only ever seen fanboyism this bad in gaming, Sony vs Microsoft.

I do think it's dangerous though, people are being swayed to spend many thousands on what is essentially defective product.

I fail to understand why anyone would use these workarounds for a camera with bad engineering design. Why promote this garbage? Why spend thousands of dollars on a camera that works half-assed at best and requires you to spend another thousand to use it for some of it's video modes but not all?

This is it. Only canboy's persist in coming up with increasingly comical 'workarounds' rather than admit it's a lemon.

Curious that they would have such brand loyalty when they've being royally screwed by Canon - but that's fanboys for you. Logic and reason left the building a long time ago!

  8. Canon arrogantly took people for granted and thought they could get away with it because they are 'Canon'. But this is not the year 2000. They have serious competition with Sony and smartphones are now photography for the masses.

Andrew and others have written how this is a problem with Japanese companies more broadly and their failure to adapt and keep an 84 year old CEO just for example. Canon is in serious trouble and in 5-10 years will not be the size they are now.

The only explanation I have is that the card itself is absorbing the heat from the the other parts of the camera.

I've seen elsewhere users state CF cards just get warm from having them in a camera that's on, not even writing to them.

Canon sell this very heavily as a hybrid, seamlessly switching between modes. The idea when you want to switch between stills / video you have to change out cards and attach an external recorder makes a mockery of that claim. As others have said, also puts more pressure on micro HDMI port, constant switching in and out. The design is poor. Period.

    You must have comprehension issues.

You're the one with comprehension issues - in the video above he was forced to state what settings he used in the comments below. I quote him:

"4K HQ, 23.98p, IBIS on, AF ON, ALL-I (even though that doesn't matter in this case)."

He also says in the video using an external recorder 'solves' 4K on the R5. This is an outright lie - he hasn't tested it at the higher frame rates. You can't trust a word he says if he's prepared to lie like this.

Look at the pretty much universal praise for Gerald's video. I know who I trust rather than this liar.
