Very mixed. I am not dependant on ads and never have been so that side makes no difference to me, but there is definitely a shift to YouTube and social media. People aren't researching Google or reading long articles as much as before.
YouTube is a grind and I have mixed feelings about that too. I enjoy it when I have some ideas. But the thought of being on a treadmill of content is horrific. Don't post for a week and you may as well be dead.
On the other hand, EOSHD is great, having your own site independent from the algorithms of social media and YouTube is much more relaxed and I can do what I like, post what I want, when I want. And then there is this lovely forum, which is pretty unique.
Never was close to the PR side of the camera industry and rejected a lot of advances.
The site is not in a better position to cuddle up to the manufacturers, they are putting their free loans and exclusive invitations behind social media influencers instead now.
Bloggers with articles are the previous gen of social media influencers.
Now it is clowns and show offs on social media.
They are perfect for one another and I don't want to be involved to be honest.
I am looking to the future now and that is keeping EOSHD updated, at the same time as moving onto two new sites:
Full Frame AI (making most of AI for photographers)
    and
Ultra Camera Review (smartphone cameras and apps)
There is much more future development in these areas than in mirrorless cameras, or filmmaking. Video on stills camera has kind of been "done" hasn't it?

There isn't one reason for the decline in websites like DPR and IR, but clearly the ad money has shifted to TikTok and YouTube social media influencers, and away from written articles so that is a big reason. The jazz media company that bought the magazine company that Dave sold IR to back in 2019, saw no worthwhile profit in IR's books.
Not only are these sites predominantly about written articles, they are about a subject that is fast turning into a niche.
Smartphone cameras are mainstream as we all know, and that means proper cameras are now about as mainstream as cassette tapes.
I think AI will accelerate this retreat even further.
The other general trend is that both DPR and IR were not ideal from a content point of view, it was often like reading advertising copy, as is the case with so much in the camera world in 2023. There is a lack of drama, a lack of true insight, it has all become a bit dry.
The camera companies should be really worried about these two canaries in a coal mine and they won't be the last to die. It points to the fact that the camera industry should probably do something to stop the rot and support the remaining sites.
    Sadly they won't.

I don't understand why they can't leave the website live and just stop updating it. Web hosting can be very cheap. They can leave affiliate links and ads to pay for the hosting. I have used the site many times when considering lenses and probably have clicked an affiliate price link, I expect the same applies to a big percentage of photographers and videographers.

All I can do is rule out the Mi 10T Pro. It doesn't do 120fps. It isn't an option for any resolution. Maybe it's because frame drops are common. It just goes up to 60. I recommend you ask on their Discord server, where you will probably get a fast answer in the dedicated Xiaomi room.

Yeah, it's amazing the difference that app makes. But the developer and others acknowledge the limited glass on the phones. Maybe someone will bring out a more affordable version of the Xiaomi Leica concept phone where you can use Leica lenses with their latest flagship. Would love that with Fuji or Sony APSC mount or even M43.
Obviously ergonomically bad, but these devices are little powerhouses that could be very useful with decent lenses. If using a tripod the ergonomics don't matter too much and they have great screens. Would be awesome to be able to pick up something like this used after it has been out 2 years for the fraction of the price of a Fuji XH2.

On their Discord. He said this: "if i remeber well, Asus Zenfone 6 had exposed the 8k resolution native".
Then he brought up the old LG V35 and said that would be better with it's 16MP sensor, doing 4K raw.
I will probably just stick with my 6K phone doing motioncam raw and upscale to 8k, as it sounds like the ZenFone 6 may not be very good. I will see how much they cost. But he seemed to agree that sticking with the 108MP sensor in my Xiaomi would be best. Maybe the ZenFone is weaker and skips frames or something.

He also said: "As said before if you want the most details capture in daylight use an LG V35 w 256gb version. That sensor and optics mix gives the most definition i had ever seen in a smartphone.
Again 1 minute of 8k more then 40GB (plus is more sensitive in terms of capturing, easily you can get frame drops)
On newer phones i am sure this wont be an issue."
BTW LG V phones are great for audiophiles like me, who use wired earphones. Much better sound quality than other phones as they have a built in AMP DAC.

Unless you're shooting in a log profile or doing lots of color grading 8-bit is fine. I film the majority of my event work in 8-bit because 10-bit just isn't necessary when I don't need to do a ton of corrections. I film in the natural color profile on my Lumix cameras, set my custom white balance, and I'm good to go.
10-bit is great to have for narrative, commercial, and even corporate/interviews where you're going for a certain "look." It is also very good for green screen work. Since getting the Lumix S5 and full v-log I've filmed more in 10 bit. I really like it, but it's just not necessary for a lot of stuff.

Chxfgb reacted to PannySVHS in 8 vs 10 bit
8bit 100mbit HD codec from the GH5 is pretty good for a lot of stuff. Twisting colours is pretty solid with it. 100mbit on the 4K from my GX85 is amazingly good for grading. These are in 709 acquisition. Wouldnt film VLog L in 8bit. 100mbit 4K on the A7SII was some of the worst codecs I have had to colour grade for someone. 12 444 all intra hd on the C300II can fall apart badly in bad exposure giving temporal noise reduction artefacts galore. So it´s not 8bit vs 10bit but rather the quality of codec vs codec.

The regular S23 4K cDNG in Motioncam blew me away. Looks better than anything than I've ever seen from any phone, crappy and heavily processed "8K" phone included.

We had this topic in 2015 about 4K. Very similar responses i.e. anti-4K. I used a 4K Oppo phone before I got a GH4. Terrible dynamic range and I didn't attempt anything other than bright daylight. Had to go back and re-shoot the videos with the GH4.
The raw 4K sounds interesting. I shall look that up. Maybe there is a way to do raw 6K or 8K too? Apparently my Xiaomi upscales 6K to 8K anyway.
Either way, I will be filming on my A6400 in 4K this time (attached to the phone), as I am not relying on phone video. I am just open to it for the sake of having some 8K footage.
Maybe we will be back here in 2030 regarding 16K phones. 😉

Get an Android phone that supports motion cam.
Shoot 4K cDNG and upscale in post.

The S23 actually does an incredible job with motion cam.

Will look at least 10x better than any garbage like 4K and 8K phone video, iPhone ProRes included.

The idea of editorial independence was enshrined in the BBC’s founding Royal Charter in 1927, which stated the corporation should be “independent in all matters of internal control.” This was a way of ensuring the BBC’s coverage was not subject to political interference or pressure from any external sources such as the government.
Now the editorial independence of the BBC is at best completely neutered by the Conservative Party. Many talented journalists have left. In many respects the best news organisation in the world has taken to sourcing stories purely from Twitter and social media.

    "Sometimes it seems that..." 🙂
No one here assumed that raw video via motion app would be worse. Worse than what anyway? Take deezids comment onboard for sure. It is a great comment.
All that content is hurting our planet big time, electric power, fuel, materials all wasted for more and more shitty content. 8k is power hungry, devices are energy hungry and greedy for natural resources. Production is greedy as fuck for energy and natural resoures. All that mass mobile 4K, 8k acquisition and distribution plus storage, devices for that, all that is leaving a foot stomp on our only planet.
Mass production and consumption of garbage will ruin our planet, the capitalist attitude and consumer behaviour even moreso.
Not against your search for image quality. But my two cents without judging you!
4K raw will look stellar on your 4k TV. 8K TVs are not even legally produced at the moment for the European market anymore.

Chxfgb reacted to ac6000cw in Noob question about video type on TVs
The problem is probably caused by 10-bit files and/or too high resolution. I think 10-bit is more likely to be the problem on older TVs e.g. ones that don't support HDR etc.
    As Michael S says, for maximum compatibility use common/older formats e.g. H.264/AVC 8-bit 4:2:0 1080p
  19. Thanks
Chxfgb reacted to Michael S in Noob question about video type on TVs
What is supported by a TV depends on the model (obviously) and how it gets ingested; i.e. Is it read from an inserted thumb drive or through some dlna server etc. All three things you mentioned can prevent a TV from playing back the footage. The more you stick with bog-standard formats, the more likely it is to play. So something like 8-bit 4:2:0, 6 Mbs 1080x1920 or UHD will work. I think following DVD standards for HD Tv's and blue-ray standards for UHD Tvs should be a safe bet. (e.g. DVD has a max bit rate of 10Mbs if I remember correctly and are in practice on average 6Mbs).

I don't understand why you think phones are such a joke. Yes the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is a mid range phone, but it has a reasonably big sensor. It shoots video with a higher bitrate than Panasonics like the GX85, G85, G7, Sonys like my A6400 etc...
It wasn't too long ago that people used camcorders with similarities to phones, sensor size-wise. The computing inside phones "can" be very impressive.
Anyway, I am not expecting too much for £175, but it will be interesting to compare the phone to the camera. I wouldn't be surprised if the phone looks better in some circumstances on an 8K TV, like well lit simple day scenes.
I ordered a hot shoe mount so they can both film the same thing at the same time. I will hopefully get good enough footage to come back and do a blind test.

Ended up ordering a used Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro for £180 (probably around $220). Will try to remember to post an 8K sample after I get my hands on it in a month. I expect it will be decent for bright landscapes, but mushy and/or noisy for lowlight. Will probably bake in the look I want to avoid editing artifacts but I think it does shoot log, so will try pushing it with editing too.
Sounds like the sensor is the same as the one in 3 year old Samsung flagships like the Note 20 Ultra (Samsung ISOCELL HMX sensor). But it will shoot at a higher bitrate. I thought the first very high MP sensor on a Samsung was a bit of a gimmick when I tried zooming in with it in a shop 2+ years ago. Fingers crossed this isn't mushy too.

You must have missed the bit about it needing to be 8K for 8K TVs. 😉 I have had a better camera than the G9 for 4K, the XT3. I have an OK one at the moment with the A6400 (which has far worse video options, like 100Mbps bitrate), it's more for travel and street photography.
Those prices sound amazing for the Panasonics. Used Fuji prices have been going up a lot, maybe M43 is seen as dying now? Are M43 lenses cheaper now too? I do sometimes miss my G7 and one or two lenses I can't use on APSC, like the C mount Pentax Cosmicar 25mm f1.4.

Compression done after-the-fact will always have the advantage because the whole file can be analysed and processing can be done in slower than real-time, whereas cameras can't see into the future and have to be able to compress in real-time.
When you're talking about the types of bitrates that we operate at, ie, >50Mbps for 4K, it's in the diminishing returns part of the quality vs bitrate curve, so large decreases in bitrate don't impact the quality nearly as much.
