Finally the type of test that everyone should be talking about, but nobody bothered doing!
    Richard Butler:
"In just under two hours I shot 164 images, all in CRAW, some as parts of short bursts. I then switched to video mode to capture some 4K HQ footage and was confronted by 04:00 minute limit, despite plenty of card capacity.
The overheat warning displayed immediately and, after shooting three sub-10-second clips the camera said it would only shoot for another 02:00 minutes."
    FUCKING SHIT!

It does have. At ISO640 and ISO16000.

And the ISO performance has been stated to be better by 1 stop from all mid to high ISOs.

R5 overheats after 9 minutes in All-i 8K 24/30 fps (not even RAW) when testing the camera in the car (10:20). Then, a little while later when he starts recording again, it overheats much faster. This camera is basically unusable when recording longer than 1-minute clips. You also have to wonder what is happening to the long-term health of the internals (e.g., circuit board) considering the excessive heat generation. This $4K investment could easily burn out its circuits after the warranty period.

It’s nice to see talk about art intrude a bit on discussions of gear for a change. Here is a video I think stands out against the usual YouTube eye candy in both skill and substance.

    ANALYSIS
The new sensor technology that allows you to shoot at lower resolutions for higher framerates is arguably the most important aspect of this camera. That and...price. There's really no reason to be in a RED at this point in time. I guess if you hated money you would stick with them? I'm scrambling to find one area that RED would beat BM in and I can't think of one. It was always codec but we might just be there with the release of this new version of Blackmagics Color. Add in the full ecosystem compatibility with Resolve and the fact that it's almost 3x the price. Seriously, if Blackmagic wanted to make a dent on the high end I think they just blew it up. RED is going to have to innovate AND lower their prices (drastically) just to be competitive again. You will have outliers and people that stay loyal to the brand for whatever reason...but if you're unbiased and just looking to make the right purchase, I don't see how RED makes any sense. As of today at least.
Seriously a crazy release and few days here. I don't know if I have ever pre-ordered>cancelled pre-order>pre-ordered new camera in a 48 hour window before.

Next thing you know, wedding videographers will be tweaking all over the dance floor... dreaming about how much they could crop into a 12K image to properly capture the snot from the bride's nose in a glorious 8K delivery...

The most important thing is that apparently, it does not overheat and there is no need to wait for it to cool down, to continue using it.

S35 sensor does go well in a M43 mount as JVC showed.
Blackmagic have such great innards. It is time to step up the game and put them in a camera body worthy of the image, sensor, codec, and touchscreen UI.
A $2500 Pocket camera with EVF and IBIS would be a roaring success.

Look I'm not going to get personal here.
I don't know the guy in real life.
At the 1:10 mark: "Let me be clear on something. There is way too much speculation going around about an issue that doesn't actually exist (yet)".
    Really?!
    No. It's not speculation.
100% factual. Canon official test timing info.
    At 1:23 he whines:
"None of the press has had a production camera. All the cameras are pre-production"
Perhaps he can explain then why Canon went to all that trouble testing the pre-production camera to calculate overheating times and releasing them publicly if the problem suddenly won't exist by the time the final firmware is ready?
Canon did all the testing on the beta firmware camera. Same hardware as Peter McKinnon was given and likely exact same firmware version.
It's two weeks from shipping, the beta firmware is basically the final one. The hardware is final. The thermal design is final.
    Jared just doesn't get it.
But then the whiney voice really ratchets up a notch because one of his viewers dared pointing out a fact or two!
The viewer said "stop ignoring the overheating".
"What I am ignoring?" he responds!
"The document that is floating around purportedly from Canon?"
    Purportedly...
    I get it...
Discredit the facts. Discredit the source.
Heaven forbid - Don't mention the original source EOSHD, during the time all other major sites were stone dead silent on it.
I am not finishing for credit.
But again it illustrates the sheer cheek of it. Clearly I or CVP don't deserve an ounce of his publicity or thanks for expanding his knowledge and breaking the news first to his audience?
And when you do simply add up what Polin has said, it absolutely stinks.
Gloss over the fact the timings are legitimate. Imply they aren't even final. Imply the overheating is "speculation". Imply there may be zero wrong with the final camera. Say how great a stills camera it is. Claim abject poverty and that the video you're watching puts no money in his account. Say the actual overheating timings may not even be real!
And then to top it all off...
"If it is real, Canon are really honest!"
The sheer fucking cheek of it.
His viewers commented that he's "getting his bank account lit up for these videos".
And of course he denies it.
"I'm not getting paid by Canon..."
What he forgot to add was "...this time"
This is a guy who has no problems sitting on a beach in Hawaii for the EOS R launch, hotel and flight paid for by Canon.
Of course he is getting his bank account lit from the videos. They are monetised.
And the gist of the last 5 minuets if you can get that far is... Canon are honest! I am honest too! Now watch these YT ads and click these links so I can get even richer. 160k views on the overheating controversy and of course not a single mention of his original sources for the info. Not even the CVP video let alone EOSHD.
I don't envy these creators. I don't get any satisfaction from being handed cameras for free or going on press controlled junkets. I make a good living off EOSHD and don't feel the need to have 160k views on each video. But if people wonder why I'm not championing the American YouTube Circle Jerk and chomping at the bit to join in, well... Here is exhibit B, out of 10,000.

Doesn't look too great for 60p to be honest.  However, they're quite extreme pans.  At some point, we'll get proper measurements.  Comparisons to say the S1 would be useful when they arrive.

Yup. Informed decision is what this is all about.
No unnecessary bias, just the facts, however negative they may be.
Peter McKinnon in the cool April Canadian breeze on his yacht noticed the overheating - so why didn't he dig a bit deeper and give us any info whatsoever on how this occurred, in what mode, after how much time and on what type of shoot? (Well we can guess what shoot - Canon advert!)
Instead he immediately moves onto how great the small body is and how it has to be small so can't have a fan!
    The sheer cheek of it.
He thinks we are that stupid!
Some people may not like the facts, but when the problem bites them on the arse in the middle of a shoot I hope they'll remember my blog and how many of the shill-types glossed over it.

Smartphone H.265 encoder / CPU are off the shelf components and not even expensive. Look at BOM cost for a Samsung S20.
Nothing to stop Canon from using latest 7nm node manufacturing if they wanted to.
The EOS R5 overheats because it is not the latest cutting edge silicon.
Frankly, for £4000 it should be!

The shortcomings of m43 are the reason it gets less praise. You’re stuck with a couple mediocre sensors and shitty AF if you go Panasonic or mediocre video if you go Olympus, if that’s fine with you great, but they don’t work for me. Photos look no better than a RX100, too much noise and lacking in DR. Every time I see the 43rumors weekly roundup half the images look like phone shots. Those don’t work for what I get paid to do. I shoot FF for stills, to get the reach with with m43 I’d have to carry two kits. So yes this is a big deal. You get the best of both worlds, superior IQ and the reach, the difference between 40+mp and 20 is significant. And now it comes with crushing video specs that makes cine cams well over $10k look like a joke. If m43 works for you enjoy, It just doesn’t work for me. Cheers.
