How do you do run and gun without IBIS? You know.. I’ve come on here for years and listened to Andrew ask for the one thing that would have made Canon a champ all these years - all we wanted was a decent upgrade to the 5D Mark II - a perfect hybrid camera video shooter. All those years ago, Canon saw the potential when Hollywood was actually utilizing 5D Mark IIs on set. But rather than capitalizing on this moment and continue to create consumer-grade products that were so good - they could be used in Hollywood, Canon instead went the other direction - chose to “monetize” those Hollywood customers with Cinema EOS - purpose -built products specific for video, and much more expensive too!
In 12 long years Canon failed to recognize the need for a consumer-grade hybrid - a proper update to the 5D Mark II. Today - More than ever before - photographers are becoming videographers - it’s just the nature of the business. People still take photos, but people want video.
In those last 12 years, Canon has only released two more products that are as “perfect” as the 5D Mark II as a hybrid shooter - the 1DC and the 1DX Mark III. Every other product Canon has released has had some sort of diminishing return - what we call “the cripple hammer”. But that cripple hammer is mostly thanks to Cinema EOS, and the mental gymnastics Canon continues to take their customers through in order to “protect” this Cinema market.
Yet I haven’t heard of any of those “Hollywood” customers purchasing Cinema EOS products - I certainly don’t see them at the top of the sales charts. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure ARRI and RED are more popular at the Hollywood level?
So then why the need for Cinema EOS? To me it’s just a ploy from Canon to force you into buying one product for video and one product for stills.
Knowing this past history I went into this R5C announcement with expectations that IBIS would likely be missing - looks like I was right.
Without IBIS I just don’t know who this camera is aimed for. In hindsight I guess we should’ve seen this a mile away. We have the C70 and the R5 - had Canon made a “perfect” solution then why would anyone buy the C70 or R5 moving forward?
And so perhaps the issue is that Canon has too many products with no focus? It’s no wonder that they’re losing money. Why do consumers always have to trade off with Canon in this manner? Especially when no one has to trade off when it comes to Sony or NIkon.
My current camera is a 5D Mark III. I haven’t upgraded not because of cost but because Canon refuses to release a perfect camera. And if I’m spending $10K on the camera, lens, batteries, battery grip, adapters and CFExpress cards - all required for the R5C - then we must demand perfection.

Perhaps the R5 Mark II will be the true spiritual successor to the 5D Mark II? Would certainly make sense? But how many more years do I have to wait? And what features will continue to be omitted as part of a stupid effort to keep Cinema EOS “protected”?

I've heard great things about the IQ of the Sigma, and I'd probably choose that over the Tamron, unless you are looking for primes to pair with it... the Tamron 35mm and 45mm get pretty good reviews. Good luck.

Thanks, yeah I love that 35. The crash zoom has become part of our visual vocabulary on a mockumentary we’re developing so I think we’ll need to carry one of these heavy zooms. Would try the Tamron first, as that looks to perform better, but the Sigma will pair well with the 18-35 we’ll also be using - so I may buy and try the Sigma first, and return if it’s just too heavy and the stabilisation doesn’t work as I hope it does. I worry about that zoom ring placement too - so need to get a feel of it. Will let you know my thoughts.

Thanks Mercer, that’s a good looking picture. I used f/4 for a while but kept finding a needed more light.

Yes we use it to match with EOS R and C300 c-log 1 — it works well. The M50 dynamic range is limited but Andrew’s profile helps squeeze the most out of it. Grades well.

PaulUsher got a reaction from IronFilm in Canon Cinema EOS C70 - Ah that explains it then!
There’s the excellent RF 15-35, not a lot of reach but will be great for indoors. Though in that use case I’d prefer the Sigma 18-35 and just use digital IS, if it’s as good on the C70 as it is on my R. I personally like the 18-135 image, and for outdoor ENG, especially when paired with a body (like the C70) that supports corrective auto iris. There’s the option to add servo ‘power zoom‘ with the nano version, but I never did.

For a one and done though, I’d still be rocking that trusty 17-55 and cropping out any really obvious vignetting in post, when needed. My C100 would crop in for EF-S lenses so hoping the C70 has a similar setting, maybe combined with some fancy RF-era improvement for peripheral illumination correction. For me the only thing against 17-55 is its autofocus - old fashioned and certainly not the smoothest - yeah it’s definitely been crying out for an upgrade for years! Still, it’s a solid doc lens, I’d never sell mine. Not until we see some RF-S type glass but I won’t hold my breath.

C70 ticks a lot of my boxes on paper (except EVF... hmmm) so looking forward to scrutinising footage of its DR etc and keen for some real world reports - especially on the ergonomics.. Not sure how it would feel, how I’d hold it (or brace it, especially without EVF) or how well my usual rig would work with it. Sounds like nitpicking but I’d definitely want to rent one before investing.

C100 Mark II - 4K sensor downscaled to 1080p in camera - small file sizes that most computers can edit - good AF.
Here's a short film I watched recently and it looks clean and detailed to me...

Oh, the other thing I recommend is to test things yourself.  I've proven things wrong in 5 minutes that I believed for years and never heard anyone challenge or question.
Most of the things that "everyone knows" online is pure BS, and the ratio of information to disinformation is so small that if someone is disagreeing with the majority of people, then the majority is probably wrong and maybe the minority right.
Oh, and if someone tells you something is simple, they just don't understand it enough.

PaulUsher reacted to Video Hummus in Shooting "C-Roll" and mental health
A YouTuber that does this basically full time is Trout & Coffee. He shoots really authentic stuff with his phone, GoPro, and I suspect an old 5DM3 or something (the video quality isn’t great) but his stories are, and that’s the meat of it right there.
He doesn’t care about AF loosing focus. Doesn’t care about lack of DR or getting the perfect shot or the most cinematic angles. Doesn’t talk about gear at all. He captures things raw and its honestly my favorite channel because its a total breathe of fresh air from all the overly serious, overly produced, overly shot and edited stuff out there. It has changed my perspective.
He shoots what Christian calls “C-Roll” as his style and his choice and makes money doing it with ads on instagram for lots of different brands.
Creators allow YouTube to bend their will to its needs. It should be the other way around.
If you enjoy vintage things, cabins, nature, good stories, campfires and canoe trips and a bit of Buddhism sprinkling here and there then I would recommend his channel.

Thanks @wolf33d. The petition now states "We, the undersigned Canon customers, demand a reply to this request - before our 30-day returns period expires." Please add your comment to the petition to give colour.
IMO Canon know what they did. A petition can only add pressure, not force admission. There's little to be gained from a petition masthead that forces Canon to deny claims that are improperly worded without a lawyer’s drafting. This salvo is a reasonable customer request for comment. Each of us can add our own personal views in the petition comments, make our own claims based on personal experience with the camera, swear, and state that we're taking our business elsewhere, to add further pressure.
If Canon don’t respond within the 30-day returns period then the legal letters that may follow from customers, drafted by a lawyer, will be strongly worded. Evidence of timers etc can be submitted to courts later. IMO it won't come to that, Canon won’t respond directly (that would be admission) and apologise, but they can and should at least add a firmware update that helps make it right. Given their options now, from their POV (even if they don't give a hoot about their customers), surely they'll decide on "a bug fix" - or whatever they could call it - as the path of least resistance to salvage their company's reputation.
Need way more signees and comments - please help and share.

The question is will some of the heavy-hitters out on YT and the web sites will call Canon out on this? They should if they're not biased. It's nice to see most who have already started the drum beat are crediting Andrew as well as others. Well deserved.

Hurray at least. This is the important thing, that it gets out there and prompts Canon to rescue the situation as they should
And that it gets out there credited to the right people, unlike with TONEH, even better.
Never under estimate the power of embarrassment!

Signed and shared. Considering putting money on advertising it as well.
I don’t like the description though, it’s not strong enough. You should say there that It has now been demonstrated that the R5 limitations are based on a timer and that with simple tweeks the R5 can record 8K and any video mode for much longer than advertised. Those artificial limitations are an insult to us customers and we require a software fix and nothing else (not a press release or whatever pure BS from Canon as said in the petition).
