In my experience of trying to maximize efficiency of lights, the answer is no.
In your example, at the same distance if you used the fresnel vs softbox, the fresnel would produce a small hotspot which is totally useless for soft lighting.
If you then moved the light with the fresnel back to cover the same area, it would be farther away and the intensity would greatly decrease.
If I've learned anything about softlighting it's that nothing beats more power.  The most effective way to get more soft light is to literally get more lights.

    Hi All,

Just contemplating adding a few bits and pieces to my lighting kit and was wondering about fresnel lenses. From what I've read (ie what is advertised) they actually increase the light output over the bare bulb by focusing it all on one place - does this mean a COB LED would give more output with a fresnel pointed towards say a 4x4 silk, than it would just mounting a softbox directly on to the light? Or am I missing something?

I can see that being a big benefit, not only for getting the most out of the lights but also being able to put them further away from the subject where fan noise will not be a problem (while still having the diffusion nice and close to the subject).

Anybody got practical experience with this?

I'm 2/3rds through a big project now and glad I chose not to upgrade - my current system is handling it amiably.

I built this i7-6700K machine back in 2016, never really intending it to do heavy lifting with 4K. It was designed to ride out the HD era as a stop-gap build.

Nonetheless it's happily cutting through an 8x22min series with all 8 eps in a single project (over 300 4K sequences in the project). 18TB of source media from a mix of Red, BMPCC6K, GH5, GoPro, 5DmkIV, and lots of AE dynamically linked graphics.

CPU & GPU barely puffing, but definitely wishing I had more ram. the 32GB is maxed out when I have 2 projects open at once - which I do regularly to consolidate versions from multiple editors.

I think I'll manage fine at least until next year; I've actually been impressed by this old rig so there's no way I'm going to upgrade while prices are at the current inflated levels.

I'm using Adobe Premiere. Occasionally After Effects for motion graphics.

For editing my own footage, my current machine is mostly fine because I'm shooting Prores (Z Cam). I started off more as an editor, so I tend to prioritize edit-friendly cameras for my own purchases. However others don't do this so much, and the latest gen of cameras (R5, A7sIII, C70) are going to be a much bigger strain for editing supplied footage.

I'm not always editing my own work either - I've just started as lead editor an 8x22min series and the footage supplied is a mix of Red, Blackmagic, GH5 and GoPro. This is going to be tough for my current system, though thankfully I'm not having to deal with those latest codecs just yet. I'm trying to avoid proxies for this one as we'll be bouncing projects around between editors quite a bit, and I don't want things going offline constantly when switching between different machines.

I think the primary controls will still be on the top-mounted touchscreen just like with all the DSMC2 bodies. The added controls on the other side are just another option. Although, it does make adding a side handle... awkward.

Guys this camera is not meant to primarily shoot 12K. It downsamples BRAW in camera, so the RGBW sensor enables full sensor full rgb over sampled 8k and 4k. THAT’S the selling point, not the 12k.

    Hi all,

Just wanting to get a bit of perspective before upgrading my workstation. It seems the price of GPU's has skyrocketed lately and from the reading I've done it seems like it's a combination of a) new import laws in the USA which have ripple effects around the globe, and b) scalpers hoarding them to drive the prices up, and c) covid lockdown meaning people are staying home to play videogames.

Does anyone know if this price pressure is something that's likely to ease in the next 6 months or so? Perhaps as supply/demand starts to level out? Or is this simply the new normal where a GPU is going to cost more than what an entire editing setup used to?

I'm getting close to updating my current workstation (built in 2016 to last me until the end of the HD era - but now happily cutting up to 6K prores), but I'm really not keen to spend $1500 on a video card if prices are going to drop sharply in a few months.
For reference, I'm looking probably leaning towards a build with i7-11700K, 64GB ram, and RTX3070.

    I'm currently on a i7-6700K with 32GB and GTX1060.

found this little nugget posted by gt3rs posted March 11
Resolve 17.1 now supports hw decoding of h265 4:2:2 10bit.
For intel you need an ice lake and tiger lake cpu. For Mac an M1.
not sure if this is applicable for you or not. How much adding a gpu would shake things up i have no idea.
does anyone know if adobe or after effects take advantage of icelake or later cpu's already ?
i can however guarantee whatever you buy, a newer, faster, cheaper product will be released two days later.

Two things may well improve supply in the near future. First is the Chinese government's recent policy changes regarding cryptocurrencies, which have apparently already caused large numbers of used cards to hit secondhand markets in locations near to crypto data centres; second is that nVidia are supposedly releasing cards that can't be used for mining. So hang tight.

That was another thing holding me back slightly - I did have a good look at the M1 and considered it, but it's hard to cut through the hype and figure out whether it will actually do what I need. I decided it probably would not, but I also agree that Intel will answer with something soon, and at much more professional levels (and I'm sure Apple with have more professional options or an M2 very soon, but if I was happy to pay $8000 for an editing machine then I wouldn't be asking the question about current video card prices!)

I'd wait unless you're really in need of doing it sooner. I suspect we'll see prices drop in the next couple months and things will get back to normal as production picks up again. I also suspect we'll see Intel and AMD releasing their answers to the M1 in the next year or so, which should make things very interesting.

I don't think anyone would consider now an ideal time to build a new machine. But, perhaps you could explain your workflow and list the programs you use?

    Seem pretty easy to me.

If you get the FS7 for it's gun-for-hire appeal, you can still use it for self-produced client work as well.

If you get the 6K for self-produced client work, you'll probably miss out on a lot of gun-for-hire work.

Used it on a shoot for the first time today. I was slightly worried about the fan noise beforehand but didn't even notice it on set. Certainly not enough to make me want to perform surgery on it and if there is any hum in the recordings, it should be nothing that a bit of noise reduction can't fix.

I had a setup that was pretty much worst case scenario - a moderately wide shot looking out a window in to midday sun on a very bright day. It maxed out the FS300 but I was able to get a decent amount of wrap and fill on the subject. Lost the sky due to shooting in Rec709 (client request) but managed to keep most of the detail in the trees. I feel like if it had been log I could've saved the sky... maybe.

It's a lot of light output for the price!

Well I've done a tonne of research and I think I've actually come back full circle to the projection lens. I was previously leaning towards getting some barn-doors and using cookies/flags, but that still seemed like a lot of extra gear (and space) dedicated to reducing spill.

I think I've figured out what that I need:

Godox SA-P Projection Attachment (which comes with an 85mm lens)
Godox SA-17 Adapter (which makes it fit on to a standard bowens mount)
    Selection of Godox Gobos

This seems like it will do what I need, based on what reviews I could find, although I do wish it was available somewhere as a full kit rather than having to buy all the components individually - I just hope I'm not missing something.

The Panasonic EVA1 was a great camera, giving the power of an FS7 (and arguably a prettier picture too) in the smaller form factor of a FS5, but.....  it had a few problems, a few examples:

    1) came out too late, the FS7 had already got a firm grip on the low/mid end market (same problem the C300mk2/C300mk3 suffered from)
    2) lacked a MFT Mount, thus couldn't build upon the huge huge success Panasonic had created with the GH series (and the rest of their MFT range)
    3) Panasonic lacked a history in the S35 market to build upon, unlike Sony or Canon (which had their older F3/FS100/FS700 or C100/C300 etc). Not even on the high end did Panasonic have much of a track recorder having not long ago (relative to the EVA1 launch) brought out their Panasonic Varicam S35.
