We'll know for sure if they start appearing in stores over ere in Australia.

Why does every comment of yours has a massive elephant in the room?
Nobody is criticising Canon for being conservative on the EOS R5 specs.
You have to deliver the specs AND reliability, so that customers don't get a defective product.
Not hard to understand is it?

Somewhere in an Indiana Jones end scene type warehouse are thousands and thousands of R5 / R6 cameras that will never ever see the light of day.

I love how the URSA 12k is released and everyone gets mad because "who asked for this?" and "12k is overkill when all you will ever need is 4k". So Sony releases the A7siii. It only shoots 4K, it fixes the major issues that plagued it's camera, invested in better, not more pixels. Practically eliminates rolling shutter, adds 10 bit h.265 as well as 16 bit raw output and can shoot in full resolution up to 120p and SOMEHOW everyone is saying "this isn't enough" or "I was expecting more".

    You aren't filmmakers, you're hobbyists!

Braw was fantastic when I was using it with my G2, but for the A7siii I will probably record internally and transcode to DNxHR ( the form factor is why I m making the switch ) .
I did a few projects with a A7iii shooting HLG and it was very correct in post, so hopefully with the 10 bits 4.2.2 + high bitrate we will be able to correct colour balances and exposure disparities without damaging the images too much.

I like you and your blog and I think you're funny. But even so, I don't like all this personal negativity. I dont see the value in giving as good as you get. Seems better to me to rise above. One thing I like about newsshooter is how neutral the tone stays. I like where you're going with the comic direction and some of your posts have been really very funny. But I dont need the negativity in my life, it's why I quit twitter.
That being said - i agree that behiri is not giving us a lot of information I would like to know and I think he was very rude to you. But he has a point - if it didnt work for him to shoot documentary style on a typical shoot, it might not work for a typical shoot for me either. In any case, I dont want to be stressing about the camera. This is clearly not a documentary camera.
PS I hope I'm not coming off too critical or annoying. I love your blog and your insight - keep up the good work

People crapped on Sony for overheating. And it's a different time now. And the R5 is just so close to perfection that it's painful

I think the issue is that lighting design (and budget) is crucial for the look of that or any movie. I read an interview with the Hannah Grace DP somewhere where he said he had to baby the camera because of the 8-bit codec. In other words, get it right in-camera.
When I used to AC, I was on so many indy film shoots where the DP pushed the ISO of his/her RED or Alexa past their self-imposed limit (typically 1600) because their lights were too weak after being diffused.
So, I think that having a camera with the highest possible usable dynamic range and maximum ISO would probably help overcome some deficiencies of your lighting budget.

I miss the S1 but I knew I would. I don't regret selling it - especially since I'm shooting like 1/8 my normal volume right now! The fact is that the S1 would never have the features I want long-term (AF and no-crop 4K60) so I would want to upgrade sooner or later. I have other cameras (fs7, gh5 +...) so it's not like i can't shoot. I'm hoping that the A7SIII does it for me and that i won't need to upgrade it for 5+ years. If not the A7SIII then maybe i will just keep waiting for the right camera to come along.

I'm following this problem from the beginning of the introduction of the new Canon cameras. Overheating on R5/R6 is a serious problem as I've always supposed, we are receiving too many reports from the professionals. I'm sure that professional people will not use them to capture video as Canon claims, I suppose the only solution is the A7Siii, I will consider Sony if it doesn't overheat for one hour of continuous shooting, if S1H had a good autofocus it would be no brainer to choice over Canon, but it's also not lightweight camera. After comparing all the cameras on the paper, based only about rumors, Sony could win for sure. On my iMac Pro it's impossibile to check 8k RAW footage from R5, only via Resolve, dropping frames. It's a workstation that costly me rough 15.000 euros and frankly I will never use proxies with such power. So my advice is waiting for Sony and leaving the idea to consider Canon to shoot professional videos. Next firmware on Canon can't change problems with overheating, maybe 1/2 minutes of better dissipation but forget to use the camera for casual shooting...

It's the recovery times that are the real kicker. Even if they'd added somewhere with metal attached to the heatsinks to get some cooling between takes (maybe where the LCD goes) it would have been better rather than just insulating plastic everywhere.
I bet the internal cooling is sub-par too. You see it all the time with audio/computing gear. Cheap-ass thermal paste applied by a gorilla with a plastering trowel!

All those things you mentioned above.......they shouldn't matter in a video camera! It's really as simple as that. And while the r5 and R6 aren't primarily 'video cameras' they are promoted as video tools.
He was not able to create the piece he wanted to and the camera dictated how the shoot unfolded. To anyone who want's to use this camera more than just filming a few clips of the kids.....that is all you need to know.

I look forward to seeing your review sometime soon.

That'll be the day. Most haven't even got past the denial stage!
Sony's overheating was largely to do with the A6300. The A7S II was fine and has been a workhorse for videographers.
The A6300 was one quarter of the price of the EOS R5 and very much a mid-range consumer point & shoot / slash enthusiast camera at a stretch.
But the Canon EOS R5 is a $4000 professional tool. The A6300 wasn't exactly let off the hook, especially by me. It received a ton of criticism and rightly so, even thought it cost so much less than a professional camera that needs to be bullet proof reliable.
I think Canon have made a catastrophic decision, and it will haunt them for a long time.

    3. bargaining
    4. depression
    5. acceptance.
Come over to stage 5 guys, it's ok. It is inexcusable to have a camera overheat at 4k30p. Don't care if Sony had it in the past.

Gerald clarifies that his 3 hours comment is just rubbish. His camera shut down after 1 hour and 14 mins, even though he wasn't recording anything.
