I heard a rumor it was next to impossible to develop 24p in the software. It would have been too expensive. But then Steve in software development had a break through.

@thebrothersthre3 @Vision well you get 10-bit 1080p in v-log BUT only down to 30p. So no 24 or 25p. Seems so Canon-like to remove those and I hope S1H doesn’t have that limitation.

I think the z cam WDR mode uses two shutter speeds, instead of two gains. Thats why you get strange motion artifacts. It also has dual native ISOs in additionb but no simultaneous dual gain.

I think I read that the Ursa mini 4.6/pro/G2 use the same approach but with two 11 bits signals rather than 14 from the Alexa, but I m no expert.
I would not be surprised if the power consumption/heat is greater, or if the cost of the sensor is not higher.

But modern Dual gain architecture is something different if I understand it properly, it was developed by a third party company, and they licence the technology to sensor manufacturer and I think it s both a software and a hardware thing, it I think it map the dynamic range in a different way, you loose in the highlight but gain in the shadows. I think the sensor only do a single readout with this technology.

I’m curious why simultaneous dual gain sensor architectures a la the Alexa Alev III aren’t more common in smaller cameras.  This allows a low and high ISO signal to be combined for one HDR image. It seems that in ten years most cameras still can’t match the Alexa for sheer video dynamic range, yet CMOS sensor technology has obviously evolved in many ways.
Is there a limiting factor like size/heat, a patent, or maybe otherwise?  Perhaps it’s just that the average consumer is more interested in increased resolution? We now are seeing the switchable dual gain architecture used more, but I’m not aware of lower end cameras using simultaneous dual gain.

From the OP link, "How can Canon ignore such a large amount of interest from filmmakers in smaller, affordable, 4K shooting cameras?"
I first became aware of 4K video back in 2010 while attending Canon's gear Expo at the Javits Center in NYC...it was my first time seeing 4K camera prototypes, first time seeing 4K monitors outputting 4K footage, first time seeing 4K sensors on display. I was immediately blown away by the clarity and detail possible at that resolution and I was convinced on-the-spot that Canon was clearly the brand to "hitch my wagon to" going forward.
I had been shooting my 7D and 5D Mark II for both stills and video up to that point and I was feeling a bit cocky that I had chosen wisely "going with Canon" leading into that expo. I thought, "Ooh boy, I can't wait for their 5D Mark III and Canon 7D Mark II, whenever they get announced! I've got to get my hands on some 4K gear, pronto!" And with the arrival of the 4K-capable 1Dc in late 2013, I was eagerly anticipating my "impending good fortunes soon-to-come"! Ahahahah!
The 2012 no-4K announcement for the 5D3 was a true "WTF?" moments for me, as was the 2014 7D2 announcement. "Really Canon?! What's the hold up?!" I was dismayed. Plans were dashed, my future shooting goals, postponed seemingly indefinitely, I was not a happy camper. Who, if anyone, was going to bring 4K DSLR-style camera gear to the masses?
The subsequent arrivals of the 4K-capable GH4, FZ1000 and the Sony Alpha lines began to offer a glimmer of hope for me and my "4K Canon master plan", "surely they'll come through now!". But, as we all know now, I was "hoping against all hopes". "What a shame and disappointment, Canon." I thought...and still do.
I began to jump ship from Canon with the FZ1000...and it was a revelation in "what the competition was up to"...sensible menus, fabulous in-the-field ergonomics, great video output quality (for me, at the time). I opened myself up to see what other manufacturers were offering and soon ended up with a Sony a6300 and a7SII...not as user-friendly as the Panasonic and more than a few-notches-below on image stabilization and rolling shutter, but usable, not a fan of their color vs Canon and Panasonic.
In the past year+ I've been a razor-thin phone call away from grabbing either a GH5 or GH5S after getting some 2017 PhotoPlus Expo hands-on time with Panasonic's G9/100-400mm combo...now here was Image Stabilization realized! A small piece of kit that can effectively do what my Canon/Sony FF camera + Sigma 300-800mm lens can do, but handheld with IS?! I was absolutely floored and that kit was under the holiday tree for my sweetie two months later!
I'm onto the S1, now...as I roll my fingers daily still waiting for that mythical V-Log upgrade to make that long boat trip to North America...thank goodness for Cine-D to sort-of hold me over in the meantime.
And, "whither goes Canon?" I know not and, truthfully, do not truly care any more. And I do not write this with malice or from "sour grapes", it's just that they are no longer innovators and pioneers in my eyes. Based on what I saw and experienced back at that 2010 expo, Canon could have and should have owned the 4K DSLR/M market today...how they managed to "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" is beyond me. Haw! And should they ever decide to produce a DSLR/DSLM camera worthy of my attention and shooting needs and desires, I'll surely give it a look-see. But, to the OP's question, yeah, they lost me as a customer a while ago.

Amen. A lot of people rave about sharpness, but that is the exact opposite of what I look for in an image.  It’s one reason I’ve enjoyed shooting on Canon over Sony (despite the disappointing lack of features in their lower tier cameras).

I think the C200 looked the best in the studio shot... the BM cameras made the girl look sickly and two-dimensional in comparison. I even preferred the C200 over the Red Helium (I hope I don’t get a cease and desist order).
With that being said, I still believe Canon is making a huge mistake taking 24p out of their “lower” tiered cameras... regardless of their reason for doing it. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter, Canon does not offer an inexpensive camera that I am interested in, so if/when I am in the market for such a camera, I will look to another brand.

First off, the C200, C300 MK2, are work horse cameras. You can literally shoot entire documentary with a bare bones package. The reliability, form factor, ND filters and XLR ports make things so easy. The batteries run for literally 4/5 hours. It is ridiculously easy to color grade. The skin tones have a softness and smoothness that the pocket just does not produce.
Also, this guy is a youtube review guy. The pocket 4k clips so damn hard. If you clip highlights, it looks terrible. His example shots are literally the best case scenario. He also keeps talking about "how accurate the green in the trees are." To be honest, the trees look like Sony green, with lots of yellow. Kind of sickly.
Sharper is not better. That pocket is looking harsh in comparison. It almost looks like the C200 has an extra scrim up to soften the light. The forehead and cheeks have this harshness in the highlights that literally does not exist with the C200.

After today’s Panasonic announcement, I found solace in this thread...
Although, I am certain the S1H will be an amazing camera, I am so glad that Blackmagic recognized the desire for good old fashioned 1080p raw and ProRes over 5 years ago.
But times change and sadly spec wars have become the norm for the foreseeable future.
Oddly enough, I kinda smiled when I learned there wasn’t internal Raw in the S1H because even at $4000, these large manufacturers cannot offer what BM offered 5 years ago at a quarter of the price or what the Magic Lantern team figured out 6 years ago in a full frame camera.
I will admit that the first company that can offer internal raw and IBIS or DPAF, for less than $2500 will get my money.
And here’s to hoping that Sigma will sell the FP for less than $2000, even though I suspect it will be closer to $3000.

The V-Log S1 sample is free of any sharpening and nr artifacts, wondering what this guy is talking about lol. If anything the S1 looks noticeably smoother.
The Braw sample is full of noise and hair looks (enhanced). The exposure could have been even hotter to reduce the noise honestly, you can still lower ISO later to add some contrast back
After two minutes of matching without any secondaries I came up with this.

    S1 V-Log

The left one is the S1, the right one is the Pocket (you can spot easily, because it's "cropped", aka 4K DCI).
Download the sample clips and try to push your own grade to it's limits. I'm not a colorist, just quickly graded these two clips  After I uploaded them, I noticed that I pushed the Pocket highlights a bit too much. The braw has the information (highlights max at 80 IRE) but the brightest parts of the screengrabs are over 100 IRE.
I only had the Pocket on one shoot and got the V-log license yesterday ? So, I will upload more sample clips probably so everyone can get the idea what are these two toys capable of.

    Hey folks,
I made a quick test comparing the BMPCC 4K with the S1 V-Log. Here are my thoughts with the sample clips
It was a quicky, so do not take that a professional reference, but you can play with the footages in resolve to see how they hold up against each other.

I don't disagree with the overall issue with the internal batteries being poor but just as an FYI really, the BMPCC can use the usual cheap SmallRig NPF sled which mounts on the top hole if you did need to have a longer run time so I've took a quick snap of my cameras to show you the form factors.

The overall package is much smaller depth wise with the BMPCC but at the expense of doubling the height of the whole package but this can be offset by using those smaller capacity NPF batteries which reduces the form factor.
The additional big gain for keeping it small also comes in it having the integrated LCD and, much as I love the expansion capabilities of the Micro, having to wire the connector just to get a LANC start stop is a bit of a pain when the Pocket can have one plugged directly in.
For travelling, this LANC grip, an EVF loupe and the two cheap tiny Panasonic collapsible zooms (the 12-32mm and 35-100mm) which both have OIS make it a pretty good modern day impression of an old school cine camera.

The Micro wins for image due to it higher fps and lower rolling shutter and the expansion possibilities make it brilliantly customisable but the Pocket, for me, is more practical to do casual stuff with.
One word of caution regarding what is a very cheap price for the one you are looking at, make sure you check the HDMI port works.
