Just want to add something concerning AF with the Canon 200 f2.8 adapted via MC 21, as I am testing it a bit more right now. I was diving through the AF menu, and found a setting that just dramatically improve the ability to focus + speed  ? Really do not know why it improves a lot... but here is the settings : under settings, Focus-Shutter 2 /Pinpoint AF setting / Pinpoint AF Display => default is "PIP", and I changed it to FULL. I feel it now behaves not far from the demos I have seen from Sigma EF mount used with MC 21.

  2. Just received my S1 replacement, and 2 new lenses : Canon 200 f2.8 II (Thanks @Mattias Burling ! Been wanting this lens for ages when I was a Nikon shooter, and your video on it finished to sold me) and a Samyang 20 1.8.

So, if someone is interested, I tested both with the Sigma MC-21. AF with the Canon 200 is... really sh*t ? Sometimes it hunts a lot, sometimes it nails it quickly, and most of the time it plays back and forth for 1.5s before acquire focus (on rare occasions, it get lost into a parallel universe ; gonna check if I end up with a Stranger Things upside-down look !). The good thing is the manual focus on this lens is really great, so, when AF fails, I back it up in no time. IBIS is absolutely fantastic, I can't believe how it is good. Less good than with the 24-105 dual is but, seriously, I managed to stay steady, tripod like. Concerning the lens itself : I never had such a sharp lens, maybe a Fuji 90 f2 ; I love the look it gives to the image. I wanted a small, light and bright tele lens for multiple uses : distant landscape, documentary, deep sky astrophoto and occasional portrait, for stills, and roughly same things + wildlife (using it in crop mode) for video. Of course I would happily take a usable AF in every mode, but for that I'm waiting on L-mount lenses in the future.

The Samyang 20 1.8 works with the sigma MC21 with no problem (manual lens with zero electronic). Gonna use it for nightscape photography and "tripod" landscape, and, most importantly, for filming real-time northern lights. The lens is not very good @1.8 except in the center, but things get better @2.2, and really good at @2.8. I'm also eager to try it for video : 20mm + 1.8 could be fun !

Ah, and my VLOG package is arriving next week !

I got this cheap and cheerful one off Amazon for £26 and it works perfectly fine for me.

The 50mm lens tests that I did at the weekend in the lens thread were all done using it on my SL and it handled the additional stacking of CY>EOS, F>EOS and M42>EOS adapters with no problem.

Perfect, thanks ! Will glue one on my next Samyang lens :)

@Geoff_L i have only manual Samyangs without any contacts and simple manual adapter. Sorry ..

OK thanks for you answer ! I will opt for your way and buy a simple manual adapter too (and a MC21 for Canon lenses). It is not very known, I believe, but the manual Samyang lenses exists both with and without electronic contacts, the former allowing aperture control and auto exposure. The price is different, and potential issues with smart adapters exists.

Do you mind sharing your adapter model ? Thank you !

    @Walter H thank you !

I am working mostly manual focus, and use the Af only when i need tracking or to find the focus point in critical situation and then switch back to manual( there the S1 is very good with the Eye AF ). continuos tracking works only good when 1 person is in scene and the background is blurry ( thing that on weeding is not often )., maybe works better with lenses that have 1.5 aperture . I have only the 24-105 and manual Samyangs. I wait for the Sigma L- Mount lineup.

My setup is simple, monopod with manfrotto head on a Hijib belt with 20000mah powerbank under, Rode Micro and variable nd filter.

With a display loop i work sometimes handheld, dual ibis is very stable and give a good floating look

i have shoot foto for first communion with 60 kids, 2 hours , 1100 foto, 5 out of focus( with the Eye AF ) I think is not a bad result with the kids the always moving and the church was very dark

Since you mention you are using Samyang lenses, can you help me with the question I posted yesterday ? :

"For the S1 + MC21 owners : do you have a manual lens with contactors to try, like a samyang/rokinon ? I am debating between a 14mm f2.8, 20mm 1.8, and a IRIX 15mm f2.4. Both samyang lenses are available with or without contactors and aperture control ("AE" in the name of the lens).
I ask because I read several persons having problems with a Nikon Z6 and FTZ adaptor + samyang lens WITH contactors. They were forced to tape the contactors on the lens to avoid wild behavior. I wonder if it could be the same with MC 21+ S1... In that case, I would opt for a non-contactors version.
    I found a big list of compatibility, but no samyang/rokinon : https://www.tttphotography.com/sigma-mc-21-ef-l-lens-adapter-compatibility/
    "

Many thanks for your help :) !!

    Guys,what is your thoughts?

You stole this headline from Tony Northup ? ?!

Joking aside, thanks for the links. I am gonna check that on a real screen and not my phone. But given the look of the S1 videos and the first impressions of VLOG users, I think that the dpreviews demo scene is one thing, and real world use another...

Hey Geoff_L - I know you don't want to compare the S1 and Z6 yet but can you give any feedback on how the S1 video was compared to the Z6?

And has the S1 been used on a gimbal yet or is the weight and size an issue?

Ah, would be hard to tell, as I just took some awful quick stuffs to test the camera... I really can't talk about the video quality.  But as you said, I think it will be quite similar to the Z6, except for color science (2 different kind I believe). Maybe, from what I watched, the VLOG upgrade bring a special mojo (at least, I have read people working with a variety of cameras, included big toys, claiming that) to the S1, and the dynamic range + high iso performance seem to be quite remarkable. But if the Z6 raw upgrade arrives soon, I am sure we will also see a special mojo coming out of it !!

Did not tried it on a gimbal, but I suspect it would be heavy !! 1kg for the body and 700gr for the 24-105, if I remember. Must be doable, but my wrists would struggle ? But the IBIS is a large part of why I went with the S1, because I can't bring gimbal with me most of the time. I know, IBIS will never replace a proper gimbal, and I don't want to, but at least, it helps me leaving my gorilla pod or my monopod at home. When I had my GH4, Fujis and Nikons, I always brought with me a "big" gorilla pod or a monopod. And given how I film, it was really a pain to use. So when I tried a pany G9, I started to see the opportunity of leaving them at home. And as the S1 seems to have very close IBIS performances... I will be happy !! Ah and the size of course... it is in big dslr league, so we can forget about the newest tiny gimbals !

It is really a hard choice between both ; but I am sure about something : both were an easy choice vs the A7iii ? (joke !).

What about the ibis ? is it really in par with the GH5 ? It seem's to me a bit more jerky...But i i was not able to test it on long term .))  So....can you give us your feeling ?

    Georges

With the very short tests I performed, with the 24-105, so DUAL IS enabled, it appeared to me on par with the G9. But I only tried very short stuffs... like static "tripod like" ones at 24 and 105, and I got the same feeling as with the G9. I found it less jerky than the Z6, but it would be logical, given the greater room for movement !
I also watched a couple of videos were it seemed to be more jerky, but it was with canon adapted lenses.  I will try it more as soon as I receive my new kit !

Hello Guys! can som one who has LUMIX s1 or used this along with Nikon z6 can tell me about pros / cons between those two models ( VIDEO ONLY ) Will S1 will have more cons over nikon z6 in terms of grading and internal 60/50p (fullHD) ?  I have to choose 2 new body for run & gun documentary for one year of shooting. Nikon z6 or Lumix s1 are two competitor (I have gh5 and this is beast but low light must be usable over 1600 in gh5 its not gonna happened). My Ursa g2 will be to big and too heavy, my pocket 4K is great but this time I need IBIS as hell. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Lukas ! I used the z6 for around 5 months and briefly got a S1 10 days ago (had to sent it back cause my unit was defective, and I am waiting for the new kit to arrive).
I won't compare both too much because I only used the S1 for test shots, and I want to use the S1 as much as the Z6 to forge my opinion. But you mention you need IBIS as hell, so if this is a number one request, I think you should go for the S1.

I was debating between buying a Z6 again or opt for the S1. I weighted both a lot and tried to make the most rational choice given my type of work. My priorities are : build quality, handling and "sealing", IBIS, internal great videos capabilities, lenses choice and adapting possibilities. It is really a tough choice, but I ultimately choose the S1, right after the V-LOG free upgrade.

I really really liked the Z6 IBIS (you can find my impressions/mini reviews in the Z6 forum post, back in November/December), but the S1 is a lot more effective for me. I do not use IBIS as a replacement for a gimbal, but for stabilizing me during static shot while hiking/skiing, and for long lens use (wildlife, distant landscape etc.). The DUAL IS of the S1 is close if not similar to the one found in the G9 (which, I believe, is better than the GH5). I was initially really excited by the Z6 raw update, but time has passed, and I do not want to use an external monitor (for what I do, it would be a nightmare). So the V-LOG upgrade finished to sell me on the S1.

Otherwise, here are what I think, quickly : S1 + 24-05 is really bigger and heavier than the Z6 + 24-70, handling on the Z6 is superb, on the S1 as well (I prefer the bigger body of the latter), more lenses choices for Nikon if you consider adapting Nikon G, AF is really really good on the Z6 (I know I will loose that advantage with the S1, but not a critical point to me), coming Sigma native L lenses + adapted canon via MC-21 (limitations have to be taken into account) is perfect for me (most useful lenses for me are some Canon's ones).

So, yeah, won't help you a lot ? But IBIS, V-LOG upgrade, perfect body and handling sold me. Oh, and I don't think there is a wrong choice here, as both are wonderful cameras.

From what i have read it always said it is a Apple thingy. Smashing! Thanks!

I have to test again, but when I was interested in the Z6 raw update, I downloaded Prores sample files and I remember it did not work well on my PC. I have a beefy  configuration and have no problem using raw, h265 etc. But I repeat, I am not sure, just old "souvenirs"... and I remember I was disappointed cause I was eagerly waiting for the raw update ? I will try again and let you know (and it can also be a user error from me... in fact, must be that, cause I trust more Mattias than my memory ahah !).

I found the free S1 v-log (DMW-SFU2) claim process a tad confusing since regions seem to have different approaches, so I did this incomplete summary from what I've been able to gather:

    US:
The process here seem to be that you contact the store where you bought the camera and they will send you it free of charge. Some people have reported that Adorama have denied them the upgrade, in those cases contact (nancym -at- adorama.com) directly and she will help you.

    UK:
    https://promotions.panasonic.co.uk

Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland):
    https://lumixs1upgrade.refundere.com

Anyone have more links and which region they are valid for?

    France : https://offre-lumix-s1.e-odr.fr/fr/inscription/
You have to fill in the form, and it's written you'll receive it in a week. Seems valid for France, Belgium and Luxembourg.

imo it is far too detailed, even shooting with the softest lenses this will still be too detailed. Looking at peoples detailed skin makes me unconfy and takes me out of the story quickly. Season 2 of "Dark" did this for me as well, I would see these big pores and I would feel Trypophobia coming up really fast.

Good to hear ! I absolutely love the image from Dark 2 (maybe the Alexa 65 effect !) ? I loved the image from season 1, to a point that led me to reconsider my output when shooting videos (yeah, I am easily impressionable).

Okay, maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but...

That CVP video clearly states that to install LUTs into the S1 that one needs to "...rename it so the name is no longer than 3-letters..." as seen beginning at around the 2:42 Mark here...

    Full Frame 4K 4:2:2 10-bit - Panasonic S1 Firmware Update - YouTube: (t=162)

...however, this LUT tutorial from Daniel Peters clearly shows LUTs with names much longer than "3-letters" being installed onto the camera beginning here at around the 1:36 Mark...

How To Install VLOG & LUTS in LUMIX S1 on Vimeo: (t=1m36s)

...perhaps someone with the DMW-SFU2 S1 Filmmaker VLog Update can clarify as to the correct procedure for this? (I'm still waiting to hear back from B&H for my upgrade package!)

    Thanks! :)

    Oh, well spotted !

  15. Oh, I'm breathing again, the seller just mailed me : my unit is defective (see my images of the sky in a previous page). They send it back to Panasonic and I will receive a new kit soon. Can't wait... ? I must say this is quite a frustrating experience to get your hands on such a camera, but just for some test images !
All I can say for now is the handling and build quality are absolutely outstanding. I liked so much the Nikon Z6 body, but this one bring me closer to what I have always dream of !

  16. 9 minutes ago, Mattias Burling said:

@Geoff_L totally get it, I to see the glass as half full :)

Would you mind clarifying how the slowmotion works? Google only serves me people who guess or start their sentence with "to my understanding"..

What is the highest frame rate in HD, without crop, where you can still manually expose your image?

This is something that actually could tip the scale for me.

I quickly tested (before putting it back in the box and waiting for my dealer's position on what to do with the camera ahah), but I hope others will offer more detailed answers.
So, up to 4k 60fps, you can manual control. But, to go higher in fps, you have to switch into "high speed recording", and from there manual control is no more possible, even for the lowest (48fps)...
