25 mins doesn't sound right to me. How's the battery health reporting?

Thanks for the prompt to check.

The "Recharge performance" (in the menus) is "Moderate" on one battery and "Maximum" on the other but both LP-E4Ns rated only two lights on the battery performance indicator on the charger. The camera came with a third battery (which I haven't used) for which the charger gave three lights on the battery performance indicator, so I'll give that one a shot.

The manual says the camera will last over an hour in movie shooting mode "with a fully-charged Battery Pack LP-E4N and 4K shooting."

  2. Hi Matthias,

Off topic but how long can you record 4K for on your 1DC?

My 1DC records for around 25 minutes per LP-E4N battery. Is that right?

I can record for longer in 4K on my Canon M50 with a little LP-E12.

Well I had my first overheat yesterday during an interview. I thought it was going to be a 15-30mn max job but it ended up dragging on over an hour. Overheat came on just at the end so I was saved but cool down time was about 30mn. I don't think I can recommend this camera for that type of application.

Unless you bring a small fan apparently (see Cruisn Canada's video for reference). I don't know how professional that looks, however, or if it's reassuring for the client.

  4. From Canon Rumors (CR3 rating):

"I have been told that the new features firmware for the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6 and Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is “done” and will be released in the next couple of weeks."

"The EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III will all get C-Log 3 and new compression for 4K video."

"The EOS R5 and EOS-1D X Mark III will get a Cinema RAW Light option."

  5. Curious to know if "EOS Cinema Original" does provide colours equivalent to the 1DC as the manual says.

Another user on here commented that the R5 does so remarkably well.

  6. Does C-Log capture colours differently than the other Canon profiles?

When I owned and used a C100i, the colours easily achieved with C-Log and the Canon-provided LUT looked much nicer than EOS Standard - it wasn't merely the extra dynamic range. I also liked the "C-Log colours" (i.e. C-Log + BT709-WideDR LUT) over those in the WideDR profile, which surprised me as I thought WideDR essentially produced a BT709 "Canon look."

I'd like to replace my M50 with something like an R6 to achieve a similar kind of look that the C100 produced in C-Log with the Canon provided LUT, only with the sharpness and detail that the original C100 lacked.

Any help on the question above is appreciated.

@plucas : Yes I use AWB, AF & maybe even Auto-ISO for run & gun shooting on mirrorless. For more narrative work or higher-end projects in controlled environments, I'll usually switch to a cine cam with all proper manual settings. So it's not so much about the year we're in but really what the budget/project requires. 😉

As for the Canon colours, in my humble opinion, the R5/R6 have the best IQ yet on a Canon. The oversampling,10-bit 4:2:2 and low-light capability on the R6 just gives an outstanding image and color. It definitely has the "Canon" colours but with every generation sensor, they are tweaked. The biggest gripe in my early tests was that warm yellow tint but since I have the AWB set to white priority I'm getting perfect colors.

@ade towell The FHD IQ is the best I've seen on recent Canons. It almost feels supersampled. On my 5K iMac Prothe FHD looks so sharp I sometimes have to double check the resolution settings. So yeah, very impressed with the FHD which is definitely not Canon soft HD.

I can also add that the R6 has really good low-light capabilities and the noise is fine grain like which gives it more filmic quality than the usual horrible banding of some Canon sensors.

You're right about IQ. Besides the limitations of CLog1, the oversampled 4K has an image that can, under some conditions, easily rival the C70 and C500 to my eye.

@plucas: I found an easier method: hit info in AWB settings and switch from default ambient to white priority mode. this eliminates the warm tint under tungsten lighting.

I picked up an R6 by the way, and so far so good! really impressed by the IQ.

I like that in 2021 there's a time and place for professionals to use AWB, autofocus, and auto ISO (i.e. with the C70).

There's some talk that the "Canon colors" on the R6 (and more recent models) depart from the look of the C300, C100, and 1DC. Do you find that the R6's color in C-Log, be it with Cinema EOS Original or Neutral, does justice to "Canon colors" if that look is something you want?

  9. Can you eliminate the yellow-cast with a grey card and custom white balance? I realise the process for that is cumbersome but that should eliminate the warm tint, shouldn't it?

  10. Has anyone shot with both the 1DC (or other 8-bit Canons) as well as the new R5?

I've heard once or twice that "Canon colors" might have changed in the more recent cameras.

Possibly, the advent of 10-bit CLog in the newer mirrorless models means that fewer "Canon colors" are baked in, with preference given to more accurate colors that can then be graded according to preference. (This might be true of the C70 colors too.)

Interesting thread! I am on the edge of what to do, whether to go and sell my EOS R and switch to Sony, or to get an R5.

My main takeaways from this thread is that overheating really is an issue that becomes annoying, sad. 😞

Does the R5 in lowq 4k video mode not overheat? I didn't know that and thought it applied to all 4k modes.

Not in the low quality 4K mode, nor in the APSC cropped 4K mode. Overheating free.

No overheating in any mode (8K included) in ambient temperatures 60F/16C degrees too.

I have zero doubt it is going to be 10-bit 4:2:2 as even the $2500 R6 has such codec. The pricing however does appear a tad steep for an entry level cine cam although Canon C line has never been cheap..

Unfortunately yes, regarding the price of the C line.

The C300iii goes for $11,000; this C70 reportedly sports the same DGO sensor, is 10 bit 4:2:2, and shares a number of other C300 features (besides RAW). They won't drop it below $6,299.

The form factor and model number would suggest a price point and segment under the C200, which surely has a mark 2 coming soon.

This is basically the super long awaited C100 mk3.

Canon Rumors thinks it's the 10 bit 4:2:2 camera priced at $6,299.

There's another rumoured RF cine cam priced at $3,499 with C200 specs minus RAW and with only SD slots.
