Not a comparison but you can play with these two from the P4K

the highlight recovery in these shots seem pretty great but deezid claims that the DR in the highlights are worse on the pocket 4K. Does this only mean that you can blow out the highlights further in the OG pocket and still retain clean data? We're not talking about highlight roll off are we? If i am able to recover a blown out shot like the one you are presenting here with the 4K, I'd be pretty happy. I'm more concerned with the roll-off.

Since I'm sending back the X-T3, I'm planning to buy one and try it in my work.
I know there is no adapter to mount my Sony lens on it, so any recommandations about which lenses I should get to start ?

I've never heard of an E mount to MFT mount adapter. Isn't this impossible?

38 Seconds of footage from the Pocket 4K. Just initial test. Will have a lot more soon! I will make this private in a bit but it's for those that wanted a bit of footage from Day 1. I'm not fan of the shakiness since we didn't have the appropriate gear, nor did we have the Wireless FF.

DNG 3:1. 24fps and 60/24fps, there’s some light DNR on some of the clips.
Sigma 18-35mm Nikon with a Hoya ProND 8 (I put this on and forgot I had it on for the whole duration). Viltrox Nikon to m43 version. Ronin-S.
4th Axis Stabilizer (Didn’t know how to set the tension at this point, next clips will be better!). Light warp on the beach clips.

    Light warp?

Ah so there's also travelers not to be forgotten here... ; ) Let me see, the best camera is that one you have with you, isn't it? Or should we infer we have to resign on our phone camera for that? ; -)

Best camera for the job i suppose. If i need something professional i will deck out the Pocket 4K with whatever i require for that project (follow focus, gimbal, etc) i enjoy modularity and the fact that this camera starts off small and can be built up to your needs), if i'm on a family vacation and want to travel light while running after my kids then i'll go for convenience (IBIS, Autofocus). I don't think iPhones are up to the quality standards we are looking for as of yet.

You can record 4k60p in RAW on the Pocket4k with no problems. You just need to use 3:1 or 4:1 RAW, so no need to wait for BRAW (another compressed RAW format).

I really don't know anyone who needs uncompressed RAW though. The Red Weapon doesn't do uncompressed RAW at all, only compressed at 2:1 and up. Is there anyone here that would say the Weapon is not good enough for them?

IF the Pocket4K's USB port is USB3.1 Gen 2, then maybe we'll see an external drive like an NMVE drive, be able to record uncompressed but again, you really don't need it.

Generally, you need two SSD's working as a RAID configuration to get uncompressed RAW. The Convergent Design Odyssey can only record uncompressed RAW CDNG  at 4K60p when there are SSD's in both slots and your files end up needing to be merged afterwards. Wile it's not technically a RAID config, it does send every second frame to the second SSD as the data rates are just too high for a single SSD to handle. Same as Ursa Mini Pro, you need two CFast Cards in the camera for Uncompressed at 60p

Maybe 2018 has made people soft. I don't know when it started that people had to have Autofocus and IBIS to be able to shoot on their own. Remember the Canon 5D that started this whole DSLR video revolution, it didn't have usable AF in video mode or IBIS and we all shot fine with that.

I have to agree with you on the autofocus and IBIS. Now that all these gimbal manufacturers are beginning to offer wireless follow focus motors for cheap these systems take care of these 2 issues. The only reason I would need autofocus and IBIS is if I am traveling and don’t want to bring a gimbal or I just feel like being lazy and would rather hand hold the camera. For those reasons I would just bring my A7RIII.

I know most people will say why have 2 cameras when you can have all these features in 1 camera but I haven’t see this perfect camera yet.

Alexa vs S-LOG! Well of course! Let's try and stick to options in the same price range.

I suppose it depends on how much colour grading you need to do. Isolating skin tones, VFX work, that kind of thing - well, RAW is going to be a nice advantage for you there.

    Needs must!

No absolutely not against it, not sure what gave you this idea, but the number of full frame cameras has increased dramatically, so unless a smaller sensor camera can have other advantages not found on a full frame camera, I can see a point where they stop being used.

Also it is hard to get sharp corners at infinity focus on a focal reducer. For a lot of stuff, this doesn't matter - but for the rare occasion where you want a corner to corner sharp landscape shot at infinity focus, you're probably going to want a native prime lens.

No it's not a waste for you, by the sounds of it. I'm not an expert on your workflow or projects though, so that's just an assumption.

For me, I know I can get very nice results from an A7R III or any 8bit camera, and that 10bit or RAW is only a significant upgrade if it's going to be made use of.

There really does need to be more 10bit vs 8bit video comparisons out there under a range of shooting situations and grades.

I have compared RAW to 8bit H.264 before on EOSHD and for some shots, when pushed, the difference was obvious to the advantage of RAW, but the 8bit H.264 I was comparing it to was pretty basic 1080p back on the 5D Mark III. Then I did a comparison between Magic Lantern 14bit RAW and the A7S S-LOG 2, where the A7S came out on an even keel in terms of the end result with a normal grade, in Resolve, on a wide range of shots in natural light. No VFX work though. No treatment of skin tones differently to the rest of the image, so what worked for me might not work for you.

I'm going to make some more up-to-date comparisons, and would have done already if I could get hold of a Pocket 4K but it's still a complete mystery to me.

Thanks mate. That was very helpful.

As for the S-Log vs Alexa comparison, I only mentioned this in terms of mojo which by the sound of most of the reviewers the 4K doesn’t seem to have.

The Pocket 4K has a lot of interesting features, of course, but somebody needs to do a proper comparison of 8bit, 10bit, ProRes, LOG, RAW, etc. Because the image quality is closer between them than people realise, when it comes to the end-result.

I've had Blackmagic cameras in the past, and it's fun pulling around a raw file in Resolve and seeing all that dynamic range on demand, but then I have also had a lot of enjoyment out of 8bit S-LOG and Canon LOG too. Seeing how silky smooth, noise-less the shadows are in low light from a full frame sensor, being able to fluidly play it back and slap on a LUT over Canon 1D C footage - wow - you wouldn't know THAT was 8bit. Instantly nice colour and dynamic range. Same with Hybrid LOG Gamma from an A7 III, or V-LOG with the GH5 and F-LOG on an X-T3. Even the EOS R, has an amazing codec with film-like colour - and it's 8bit.

We are trading a lot of things on the Pocket 4K for that codec. Out goes a large sensor, out goes decent video AF, out goes IBIS, out goes articulated screen, battery life, high quality body, weather sealing and more besides. So it is important not to over hype it, as some have been doing on this thread. I have nothing against the Blackmagic Pocket 4K, but it has to be seen objectively.

I do have a little bit of annoyance pent up at the company, for their lame availability and non-support of EOSHD despite the tons of work I have done over the years to bring people's knowledge up to speed on their cameras and Resolve, but I am not going to let that influence the review once I finally get one.

Still no luck on that front BTW.

    Great response Andrew.

I am actually coming from an Sony A7RIII and am considering the pocket 4K, primarily because of the RAW, BRAW and high color depth since i am also into VFX work. I do color grade and appreciate great color science although color science can be subjective. I personally prefer the creamy, saturated less clinical look of the Alexa. On that note, I've had major difficulty with slog 2 skin tones. Trying to isolate skin in resolve in order to correct it in 8 bit has been a nightmare. HLG just seems like i'm sacrificing dynamic range.

I also thought with the invention of focal reducers, having the full frame look was achievable on a M43 camera? Are you against this?

So in terms of color science and color depth for my particular needs is the pocket 4K a waste? Can i achieve just as good results with an A7RIII? Is the added benefit that minimal? Anyone can chime in on this.

I have the Tilta cage for my OG BMPCC and I love it! I was looking at the ronin S for a while but I use manual glass so this combination might be for me!

I would wait. I saw somewhere DJI mentioning that they will be releasing a DJI Focus Lite for the Ronin S, similar to the Nucleus Nano. Just not sure if they can compete with the nano's price.

For Gimbal use, this should completely negate the fact the Pocket doesn't have continuous autofocus. This is a far better solution than any autofocus and super affordable.

i've been eyeing this since it was announced. Waiting for the release and it's reviews. Really dislike the wood finishes on Tilta products though. Is it just me?

  12. @John Brawley I noticed you are a fan of the SLR magic APO's. Do you think this would be a great fit for the BMPCC4K? If so, would you just use the MFT adapter or would you get an MFT speedbooster?

Ideally i would prefer a speedbooster but I've wondered whether the extra glass from the speedbooster would degrade the image quality of the lens and defeat the purpose of investing in a cinema grade lens like this.
