seanzzxx got a reaction from hansel in Cinemartin Fran 8K Global Shutter Camera
This is a really nice testament to how resolution really has gigantic diminishing returns when it comes to perceptual image quality. Manufacturers should be investing in things that actually matter such as color-depth, color-science and dynamic range. This footage looks like it was shot on a 2010 handycam, except with somehow worse color-science.

Jesus Christ, those look good ... Also of course it was Film Convert, Jon Pais, thanks! Don't know why I didn't think of that, I own the software even, haha.

Do you think the top four videos in this gallery could be? Aside from maybe the 'Color of Light' one. Genuinely asking.

Oh really? The camera that doesn't fit in your pocket isn't really a pocket camera? Hot take.

He didn't even bother to switch out "GH5" in some of the descriptions but he'll explain to you how this camera works after having owned it for two weeks.

The in-built mic actually seems to be really good - cool! Other than that Redshark News really seems to go out of their way to talk about anything other than what you might find on a spec sheet, don't they?

seanzzxx reacted to Snuff in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Watch this video and stop saying that Pocket4K is not сinematic. In the hands of the master with taste and good lenses, even the GH5 is beautiful. Otherwise, it is too early for you to have such a camera, learn to shoot first
Shot on GH5 using Lomo anamorphic and spherical lenses (50mm roundfront and +1 +2 diopters in a few shots). Graded with FilmConvert using KD 5207 Vis3.

I really wish I had the time! I'll see what I can do. I had a quick play today, literally for all of ten minutes.....
- Sensor Calibration option in menu is greyed out. I'm used to doing a calibration at the beginning of each days shoot on the UMP but doesn't look like it's necessary on the Pocket4K
- I really wish the screen articulated up slightly. Handholding the camera at chest height is most comfortable but it's not the ideal viewing angle for the screen. I would have payed a few hundred $$$ more for the screen to articulate up 30 degrees or so. Would make the camera so much more ergonomic.
- Camera feels great in the hand. Well balanced and a good size.
- hot air blows out from the bottom vent, not too much of an issue but my left wrist rests partially on the vent while pulling focus.
- I have the Speedbooster XL on it and there is absolutely no autofocus info going to or from the lens. I never use AF and didn't think it would be usable at all during a shot but even push AF not working at all with SB XL and Canon 24-105, Sigma 18-35 (Slight vignette at wide end) and Canon 50 1.8 or Canon 85 1.8. All other lens functions work well and iris response from cameras front scroll wheel very responsive.
- Did a quick recording on a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s SDCard. 4K25p RAW 4:1 and camera recorded fine for 3-4 minutes before I stopped it.
Had a quick look at the Fim, Extended and Video modes just looking at the rear LCD. The difference between Video and Extended video seems to be mainly in the highlights. Blacks look the same and nicely contrasty but the Extended mode holds the highlight better.
So far so good. Really happy with the camera.
Sorry, thats all I've got for now. Might get some time for another play tomorrow.
Let me know if you want any specific shots done and I'll see how I go but can't promise anything at the moment.....

If we are praising the GH5 here...

Thank you for the input. Have you had a chance to try the HLG profiles?

The reason I stopped shooting Slog was the fact that by overexposing by two stops the skin tones get really pasty and thin most of the times. I much rather have good skintones than some extra dynamic range, however I agree with you on the fact that the Cine curves have terrible highlight roll off.

It's because using the term ISO is relatively tricky in an age of digital photography:

Of course Blackmagic are profitable but at the same time, compared to what the rest of the industry are doing, they are 'pretty much' giving away their products.
Pocket4k with Resolve = US$1299
Adobe Premiere/After Effects/Audition subscription for 2 years = USD$1248
So after 2 years....yes, BMD have given you a free camera. ?

You could qualify the face, add a tiny bit of blur and then add some grain to the whole picture - that's most succesful in my limited experience. You could of course just add a fraction of blur to the whole image and then you wouldn't have to add the masking step, but 1) qualifying (maybe add a large mask) a face is super easy and quick, and 2) without a qualifier it will probably look less subtle because it affects the whole image.
EDIT: If other people have tips and tricks for making footage less sharp and more 'creamy' I'd love to know it, always looking for that with non-Ursa footage.

That lowlight footage still has way too much midtone detail for my taste (look at her pores), but that's something that's adjustable in post with this much data. It's just a shame they haven't managed to get it like that 'out of camera'. Still a great deal though.

It depends what kind of image you like, see samples and choose the best for your taste.

There are different types with different looks. The popular 'black pro mist' has some bloom and contrast reduction. But the Tiffen digital diffusion with no contrast reduction or bloom, and the ultra contrast is no diffusion, just contrast reduction, no bloom. The Tiffen hdfx combines those last two for both diffusion and contrast reduction without bloom. There are of course many more options but those are the ones I currently use.
My favourite (for now) is a Tiffen HDTV (sometimes called hdfx) at 1/2 strength. I use it on Nikon ais lenses for when a softer filmy look is what I'm after.
I just used one on a Fuji xh1 and (mostly) Nikon ais 35mm 1.4 on a speed booster for part of a short film. I'll see if I can get a screen grab together

I mean at this point you're just outright misrepresenting what Areia shot. Yes, he did shoot a video walking around a zoo. He also shot what I consider to be a well-shot, edited and graded video: ...
... as well as one comparing the Micro to the Pocket 4k, which is yet to come out (but he released the Pocket 4k footage already). I know you have seen these videos, mr. Reid, because you have commented on them on your own forums. Why are you downplaying the stuff he made? I mean the answer is obvious: it's because you weren't the one who got to make it. I really don't want to seem hostile to you on your own forums (which, don't get me wrong, I think is awesome for you to facilitate), but it's stuff like this that makes you come across as petty and vindictive, because by putting these little spins on the story you appear to be actively looking for reasons to feel slighted.
