S35 still gets a lot of use but all the high end stuff in my area gets shot on the LF or maybe a full frame RED. Most high end cinema is the LF as well. The lower end market seems to be obsessed with full frame. I guess BM is targeting the middle of the two ends.

Yeah I know they said a full frame camera is too expensive to do. Every other company is doing them though. I guess BM is a smaller company. Of course I can see why the in house design would be too pricey with full frame.

I switched from Sony back to Canon due to owning a lot of EF glass, but there's NO WAY they're releasing a 30p only 4k camera in 2021, right?

The bad thing about the URSA 4.6K is fixed noise pattern when pushing shadows or shooting above 800 iso. The 12k doesn't have that as far as I am aware. To me that is a huge advantage, which results in more usable dynamic range as well as being able to shoot at 3200 iso in a pinch.

I've also found the Pocket 6k to be significantly better than the URSA in terms of dynamic range.

Guys this camera is not meant to primarily shoot 12K. It downsamples BRAW in camera, so the RGBW sensor enables full sensor full rgb over sampled 8k and 4k. THAT’S the selling point, not the 12k.

is at the final stages of development and will be announced soon.
One exciting feature I can share is that the dynamic range is rated at 16 stops (actual ARRI stops, so 2 stops higher than current ALEXA sensor).

I'm not an expert in this, but one thing i have been gleaning from pro Canon users is that the official LUTs are not very good for some reason, and that highlight rendition is a particular area of concern.  Many people are using third party LUTs for input.

    This right here.
I am not enjoying your rants, Andrew, because (a) it’s a losing game, (b) makes you come across as bitter and (c) doesn’t seem to be your ‘groove’ and doesn’t accentuate your differentiation and strength.

Whether you are right or wrong isn’t the point; you can’t change the rules of the game and it doesn’t make for entertaining content.
In my opinion, your strength is the intersection point between technology and creativity (I would love to see more of the latter to balance the tech side).
You aren’t competing with bloggers, YouTube’s or even cinematographers if you create your own category.
And that doesn’t mean you can’t voice a strong opinion as part of your concept. I just would rather see you fight FOR something instead of AGAINST.

I really believe that when you belong to a proffesional cast you should never leave suspicions about your competitors. What you need to do is do your job as best you can and that will be what will bring your customer / viewer to you instead of your competitors.
    It is called professional discretion.

I would never allowed such a thread to my crown/forum.

Perhaps first ask yourself, why "upgrade" from your P4K? What is it not doing for you? Is it even necessary to get anything else?

I have a feeling we will see a new sensor from blackmagic soon as the ursa mini 4.6k and 6K sensors are quite old (in bm terms). So I might hold on till the end of summer.

The URSA has SDI out and will give you monitoring options without slow latency issues. If you are a solo shooter the P6K pro is definitely superior. Smaller and gives you everything you need. Super bright sharp built in screen, EVF if wanted, 6K, 3200 iso, internal ND's.

If you need a camera that is suited for a more professional environment the URSA is superior. It's just made for that purpose. The P6K has only a single HDMI out. Rolling shutter is another issue. The P6K has pretty noticeable rolling shutter where the URSA has a super fast readout, like an Alexa. You also get 4k 120fps on the URSA. Handheld on the URSA looks much more organic but you can work around that by uses stabilized Canon lenses on the P6K.

The Pocket 4k is a great camera if you can get by without internal ND's. Its got a fairly fast readout so the rolling shutter is much less noticeable than on the P6K. You actually get a wider FOV with a speed booster on the P4K as well, close to full frame on the .64 metabones ones. You save some space with data on the P4K and 4k is a bit easier on the editing software.

Color is better on the P6K, the low light performance is a bit better, it also has more dynamic range. The Pocket 6k actually has better dynamic range than the URSA, tho I think the URSA looks a bit more organic.

Out of the two, I'd personally go with the 6k Pro, and spend the difference on a nice lens / some kind of stabilisation, since its a lighter camera.
With that said, if you're in no immediate rush, I would also wait for BMD's next camera. Their last two releases were the 6kpro and the Ursa 12k. I think the next release will be somewhere in the middle. Maybe a box camera with their custom sensor, even if it's 'limited' to a measly 8k, it'd be worth waiting for.
They're not going to outshine the 12k anytime soon, and they also won't release a lesser camera than the 6kpro. So I would continue to use the 4k for another 6 or 7 months until the next announcement. If you don't like the next camera, the 6kpro will drop in price and you can get it then.

Personally I see you have two very clear choices:
    1) Pocket 4K: you have then two literally IDENTICAL cameras, very handy indeed for dual camera shoots. Plus the P4K is the best bang for the buck option.
    2) Pocket 6K Pro: the pros are internal ND, optional EVF, tilting screen, bit longer battery life, and slightly more resolution (meh).

    Take your pick.

    (Canon? Canon who?)

What did trans folk have to do with any of this? You decided to rant about them for no reason. Pointing that out isn't an attempt to make you feel bad, you don't have that kind of awareness or empathy, it was a genuine reaction to an unhinged rant about trans people in a post about a camera.
I'm not going to derail this thread and will simply move on and ignore you.

What about a used EOS R for that 10% photography and those times you need AF?
Personally, it bugs me using 2 different systems, but there isn’t any single system that ticks every box.
But if the BM is your mainstay, I’d do the above and see if that fills your need as it’s a cheap option.

seanzzxx reacted to kye in Need some buying advice
    I think @scotchtape nailed it - it's about AF.
Step 1: work out if you want AF or not and then buy the Canon if you do and P6KPro if you don't
Step 2: setup some test scenes with a colour checker (or some brightly coloured objects) and shoot it with both cameras and then work on a preset colour grade that will match the colours in post
    Step 3: go shoot stuff

Well, it seems like you just need to decide whether you want AF or not, it's that simple :)

The variable ND adapter for EF to RF works quite well. The only annoying thing is that the clear filter is just as expensive as buying a non-ND adapter.
If you get the R6 you would also have an excellent photo camera. If it's only for video use I wouldn't really recommend the R6 since many people have had problems with overheating. The R6/R5 has excellent focus though, and even the manual focus is better than other cameras. It will tell how far off you are from achieving focus, which direction you have to focus and the focus guide will snap to the subjects eyes if you want it to. I am extremely pleased with my R5, but if you think the image quality is 'meh' and you're doing full time video it's hard for me to recommend it.

Andrew, you're a smart guy.  So I guess you're just pretending not to know the real reason.  Welcome to the WOKE SOCIETY.  No one is allowed to be different anymore.  Free speech?  Not any more!   Still believe in biology?  You MUST be canceled, then. We've come full circle and Galileo is to be locked up in the tower again for daring to be a rebel....a CORRECT rebel at that.  So even though the FP and FP-L are in fact amazing cameras we live in a world of little snowflalkes.... but snowflakes that must ALL BE ALIKE.... even though everyone knows no two are alike.  Boys can be girls, girls can be boys, but don't you dare praise a camera for being unique.  It's the UNwoke camera.  Welcome to Alice in Wonderland where things are backwards and upside-down and common sense makes no sense to so many.  I ran out and purchased an FP months ago in large part due to your excellent review and praise and it's one of the coolest little cameras I've ever owned. It can be a stripped-down convertible or a laced-up high performance racer depending on how I kit it out.  Appreciate your defense of the little guy but they will never "get" it.  "They weren't listening then, they're not listening now.  Perhaps they never will."  - Don McLean
