@newfoundmass I hope the time until April flies by for you. Bon courage mon ami.
    Otherwise ‘answers’…
    1. Never tried but should not be too difficult?
    2. Very weird. The original fits I believe but not quite flush?
    3. Zero issues.
    4. Impossible to say really… My go to’s are: 6k 25p or 4k 50p for short clips and 4k 25p for longer stuff. My M2 chip MacBook is less keen on the 6k, but to my eye, it does look better. Log or Flat profile. I’ve never shot externally and have the vanilla 5ii so long GOP for me.
    5. Well said. Communities will always thrive if enough people actively participate.

I'm sorry to hear that and glad you've recovered and doing well.  These things definitely give clarity on what is important in life!
Sounds like you definitely deserve a new camera - the S5iiX looks like a killer offering.  I've been playing "if I won lotto, what would I buy" recently and the S5iiX is high on that list.  Enjoy!!
My only piece of advice is to just shoot a bunch of test shots and play with it to really understand how far you can push it etc.  Especially shooting highly saturated, high DR scenes, and doing a series of under / over exposures, then trying to pull them all back to a normal exposure again.  If you can get everything setup to where you can pull footage down / up to a normal exposure and have it look correct then you're in a good place with normal WB / exposure / saturation / etc adjustments.

    So...

I was diagnosed with kidney cancer on September 5. I had my right kidney removed on October 13 and am now cancer free (and if my scans show nothing in April I'll be considered cured!). During that entire period though, I didn't do any jobs and just focused on recovering, but had decided to dip my toe back into the water and had a small job planned for a friend this week.

As I was just going through my equipment in preparation of getting back into the swing of things my pup Teri knocked over my main S5 and IT BROKE. Now, it doesn't impact my job because I have two extras of the same cameras, but obviously it left me needing to get a new camera. Sooo...
I bought the Lumix S5IIX instead of getting another used S5. I swore I'd never buy a camera brand new again, but the used price isn't that much less, and I was able to get a decent deal on it with a lens. With all I've been through (having my kidney removed was, without a doubt, the most painful thing I've ever experienced, just FYI) I figured I'd treat myself.
This is a long way to ask a couple questions while I wait for it to arrive tomorrow:
    1. how easy is it to match the original S5 straight out of camera or with a little tweaking using the standard or natural color profile? I will use log, but for certain jobs it's just easier to skip that part.
    2. why is there no third party battery grip? has anyone heard why?
    3. I have a couple third party batteries. Wasabi and Newmowa brands. Has anyone encouraged any problems with third party batteries? I have like six OEM batteries but I've heard the S5II and S5IIX's battery life isn't as good as the S5.
    4. what are the best settings? I've seen tons of YouTubers but I'd prefer to hear it from people that do more than film themselves in their spare bedroom/garage and actually are out there getting the most out of their camera.
    5. This one is most important: I just want you all to know I love you all. My ordeal has given me a greater appreciation for life, the interactions I have with other human beings, and just everything, really. Thank you @Andrew Reid and everyone else that makes this place special.

I think there are a lot of reasons to stick with M43 and go with the G9II, namely the stabilization and the lightweight lenses. I don't totally regret switching to the S5 (not the S5II) but I really, really miss the lower profile and smaller lenses.
If you are looking to switch, though, I agree with PannySVHS. I think that the Lumix S5II (or S5IIx) is a great option particularly because of the stability. You would have great low light and versatility, with the best stabilization, along with really good auto focus.

    Hi there,
I've been doing mostly outdoor event video shooting as well as some indoor event streaming so have been happy with a basic kit of Olympus EM-1ii with 12-100 f/4 (which I use handheld), a GH5, and a couple of GX80 which I use with fixed prime lenses (P25 f/1.4 and P15 f/1.7) for multicam.  I also have the Olympus 40-150 f/2.8.  The Olympus IBIS, colours, AF, size and images are great.

I've recently been asked to do indoor theatre video (which this m4/3 system works good enough for) but now they want me to do some photography too.  I've done some test shots, but between the low-light grain (I can fix with AI denoise) and movement blur, I just can't do the photography with what I have.
I love the m4/3 dual-stabilisation for events, so I'm thinking if it would be better to get the Panasonic G9ii to replace the Olympus and get the 12-60/2.8-4 to replace the o12-100/f4 and maybe a used Panasonic 10-25/f1.7 zoom.

Or would it be better to switch to the Sony system with a A7siii (or similar, recommendations welcome!) with some decent 24-105/4 zoom.  I know I will gain on the low-light but will likely lose the run-and-gun stabilisation that I get in the Olympus system.  Also, I would not like to do heavy colour correction, as I'd prefer right out of camera.
Thank you so much in advance for any suggestions as it has been a few years since I've been looking at camera gear.

newfoundmass reacted to Andrew Reid in Sony A9III with Global Shutter
Sports is the main target for the A9 III for Sony and the reason they went global shutter. Lots of pesky LED advertising signs which can cause banding, lots of fast action at the end of long lenses, fast pans, and also sometimes the need for complete discreetness and silence, no mechanical shutter or flash.
So for sports photography, they are getting ahead of the Canon EOS R3.
Also the very fast burst rates, small size of the body, smaller lenses (sort of) put it ahead of any mechanical shutter camera or 1D X Mark III.
They want to challenge Canon's dominance in football, F1, olympics and so on. Big money riding on it.
I think in this regard it is really well targeted and innovative, it's just a bonus that they eliminate rolling shutter for filmmakers as well, but not as big a deal for us as it is for sports shooters.

Canon was always going to have an advantage because of their legacy lenses and near native performance on their RF cameras. Plus the name is just massive.

I think though that camera sales are only part of the picture. Are those people buying new lenses, or are they using their legacy lenses on the new bodies?

Also, what is the regional break down? I see A LOT Sony cameras these days, especially professionally. Most social media and web content teams use them for photo and video, from local companies to national companies (my friends working for WWE, All Elite Wrestling, and the UFC all shoot on Sony, for example.) The social media teams for most major venues in my neck of the woods, like TD Garden in Boston, also are using mostly Sony. But I'm also located in the Northeast United States/New England, so it might be different in other parts of the world or even other parts of the country. I also want to, but cannot for certain, say that Sony has the edge here for wedding shooters, though Canon has a heavy presence there too, especially amongst older professionals.

newfoundmass reacted to kye in Optimising resolution & sharpness in post
There is an optimum resolution and sharpness.  More is not always better.
This is why movies aren't all shot with the highest MTF lenses currently available - DoPs choose the optimal lenses and apertures for the scene / project.
However, I shoot with cheap cameras (iPhone, GX85, GH5, etc) which are far too sharp, and look video-ish.  Luckily, we can reduce this in post.
This thread is me trying to work out:
What the range of optimal resolution / sharpnesses are actually out there (from serious professionals, not moronic camera YouTubers or internet forum pedants) What might be a good point to aim for How I might treat iPhone / GX85 / other cheap shitty video-looking footage so it looks the least video it can be These techniques will likely apply to all semi-decent consumer cameras, and should be able to be adjusted to taste.
I'm still at the beginning of this journey, and am still working out how to even tackle it, but I thought I'd start with some examples of what we're talking about.
Reference stills from the Atlas Lens Co demos from their official YT channel, shot on Komodo and uploaded 6 months ago:
(You have to click on these images to expand them, otherwise you're just looking at the forum compression...)

Reference stills from the Cooke SP3 demos from the official Cooke YT channel, uploaded 11 days ago:

I've deliberately chosen frames that have fine detail (especially fly-away hair lit with a significant contrast to what is behind it), in perfect focus, with zero motion blur.  I think this is the most revealing as it tends to be the thing that is right at the limits of the optical system.
So, what are we seeing here?
We're seeing things in focus, with reasonable fine detail.  It doesn't look SHARP, it doesn't look BLURRED, it doesn't look VINTAGE, it doesn't overly look MODERN (to me at least) and doesn't look UNNATURAL.  It looks nice, and it definitely looks high quality and makes me want to own the camera/lens combo (!) but it basically looks neutral.
But, that's not always the case.  This is also from the same Cooke SP3 promo video:

The fine detail is gone, despite there being lots of it in the scene.  Is this the lens?  Is this the post-pipeline?  We don't know, but it's a desirable enough image for Cooke (one of the premier cinema lens manufacturers in the world) to put it in their 2.5 minute demo reel on their official main page.  It also has a bit more feel than the previous images.
Contrast that with these SOOC shots from my iPhone 12 Mini:

    I mean....  seriously!
(If you're not basically dry-wrenching then you haven't opened the image up to view it full-screen.. the compressed in-line images are very tastefully smoothed over by the compression)
    More:

and my X3000 action camera also has this problem:

Those with long memories will recall I've been down this road before, but I feel like I have gained enough knowledge to be able to have a decent stab at it this time.  We'll see anyway.
Follow along if you're open to the idea that more isn't better...

I don't think anyone is arguing that it isn't a very good camera, I think people just feel like the system is moving away from what it's potential is/could be.
It's a radically different time than 2017 and the years before spent developing a the GH5. You could overlook the larger size, compared to previous M43 bodies, because it was so much more advanced than anything else out there. 4K 60, 10-bit, IBIS, etc. were all groundbreaking features for the mirrorless market.
Now though, releasing a camera that is the size of a full frame camera but with a smaller sensor and features that are not significantly better than what is already out there is a harder sell.
Like I said in a previous post, Panasonic probably has the marketing information to back up their decision making, and I absolutely understand that in many ways they are in a no win situation, but I just don't think they are able to compete when it comes to specs, at least not in a significant way. But size and affordability? Those are two things they absolutely could embrace and win some people over. An updated GH5 in a small, compact body at a very competitive price is a more compelling option for a lot of us vs. something like this. But again, it just might not be a feasible thing for them to do.

What excites me is them moving to the L-mount and also what their future plans could be. I could definitely see myself picking up a Blackmagic camera for my non-event work now that it's using the L-mount. Their price of entry is low enough as it is that I could easily justify it since I'd be able to use all my lenses I've gotten since switching completely to the L-mount.

Agreed. Aside from just being ugly, it's just not a very practical design for a video centric camera. My guess though is that's how they save money on development and manufacturing costs.
