I think the glass element is really a corrective piece for chromatic aberration. As the B4 lenses were never really intended for use a single cmos sensor but a 3 chip ccd array.

    Another Crapon apologist. Oh dear.
EOS R is not "low end of the market"
The manufacturing cost issue and tech capabilities excuse has been disproven many times. Magic Lantern shows what even the very old and cheap bodies are capable of... see EOS M (first model) and even the 50D from 2008 which had no video mode. Tech has always been there for much better features implementation.
Fuji X-T3 packs in plenty of nice tech for half the price of an EOS R... please do compare the video performance between those two. The manufacturing cost of an X-T3 seems to work for Fuji's bottom line. Canon manufacturing costs I have no idea and couldn't care less about. Maybe their factories have fallen behind and need upgrading and they cannot buy the latest processors from big rival Sony? Who knows. But if Fuji can make a profit on the X-T3, so can Canon on a similar spec body, I would have thought.
Yes, when you have very old management, what worked in the 1980's may no longer be relevant today. That's Canon. In many ways they are the essence of what made Japan successful in past times, in other ways they are what happens when marketing people get too powerful, then get too old, and yet still end up running the company.
All I can say is the engineers must be very bored and thinking of leaving.
Nice, hope you enjoyed the race. However, not too hard to figure out that Canon have biggest established presence in the pro sports market for stills. Nothing changed there. Not sure what that has to do with the consumer or video market though.
I do recognise the appeal for a classic style DSLR with very good live-view, good AF for stills, an easy to use video mode, nice feel, etc.
Measure it on a technical level against competition though and the video mode doesn't hold a candle.

Some of these old cameras can flat get the job done. I think  a lot of people think they have to have the latest and greatest. Not necessarily so. A Photo my son took of his dog with my Sony A7s shows what "only" 12mp can do. Even blown up on here it still has a ton of detail. They are a hell of a camera for a bargain price now. And for colors, that grass and that dog, a male Yorkie, is spot on right out of camera. That is probably the Sony FE 16-35mm f4 lens.

Its not the higher end stuff like 5D line and the new RF line that bring in the serious cash.
Its the low end consumer cameras like the t5 (1200d), t6 (1300d), and 4000d that keep canon at the no.1 spot.
Which that $300 - $500 price point/market is drastically dying out to smartphones with great cameras like the IPhone 10 and Pixel 3.

well it for sure is not for everyday stuff. It was a pretty huge setup even on my AF100. But the quality of the lenses are beyond belief. They make a Canon L lens look kind of weak. The above picture was my 150 Dollar 19x Fujinon that was used in that video on my G7. This was the 13x on my AF100..

Thats something im looking into, FS5/FS7 has a center scan mode which is around 16mm. With that I can run a B4 mount adapter and lens.

Ive actually considered picking up the Canon FD 200mm F4. I own an FD 135mm F2.8 and its pretty good, just not long enough for sports. Also the Canon FD 300mm F4 is on my radar.

If you work on a team of shooters its more doable, like with NFL films they might have a guy manually focusing a 500, 600mm, or 800mm Prime from the sidelines.
But yes sports videography is alot easier with good autofocus - my latest edit with footage I shot for the ncaa was all autofocus - A6300 + 70 300mm FE a combo ive used since summer 2016
Shooting sports at night with less contrast = focus peaking is almost useless
Camcorders make sports a lotttttt easier, you can hookup a lanc controller to just about any camcorder and with that you can get remote rec, zoom, and focus(That's what I had with my Sony Z90), if you get a fancy one there are controllers with custom buttons for things like exposure.
    I still have this one - http://www.libecsales.com/products/remote_controls/ZFC-L.html
When the FS5 comes I believe it should work with my 18 - 105 F4.

New setup went well today.  I'm not sure I would change anything, at least based on todays shoot.  The worst part about the shoot today was that I forgot to take my hat!

    The setup consists of:
GH5 Rode VMP+ Sun 70-210 f3.8 lens (sample images to come) cheap ebay monopod (modified with the head removed) The mic is mounted on the side and forward which pushes the camera back from the monopod allowing easy access to the viewfinder.  It's a cheap ebay flash adapter like below, with the camera QR plate on one end, a cold shoe adapter on the other for the mic, and the monopod in the centre mount:

The tripod is modified with the head completely removed and a screw installed in the 'cap' that used to support the head.   It's not quite straight but, oh well, whatever!

The screw is actually the screw part from one of these, which I used epoxy glue to hold in place, and the flat part meant for the cold shoe provides a strong connection for the whole thing.

I still have a niggling want for a lens longer than 200mm, maybe a 100-400 zoom, but there don't seem to be any cheap fully manual ones around.  The players at the other end of the field are pretty small in the frame even at 210mm (420mm equivalent).

I know that Tony is going to catch a lot of flack for his views, but he does make some valid points. The overall dslr/mirrorless market sales are falling and have been for a while. I think that many of the camera companies didn't expect the decline to be that severe or rapid. This trend is also likely to continue since many (most?) people are happy with the images and videos produced by their phones. The phones are also continuing to make remarkable progress in image quality and they will continue to improve in the future.
The camera companies are making and selling cameras in order to make a profit. If they are losing money on a product, they will eventually reduce their losses on that venture. I think that simple economics will dictate many fewer "big" camera choices for us in the future. They will still be around for many years, but the innovation is likely to slow down in favor of smartphone tech. Hopefully some of the smartphone camera tech trickles up to the "big" bodies

Mako Sports reacted to kye in Nano-rigs - hand-held camera rigs that do it all and fit in your pocket
There are lots of tiny cameras that can deliver professional or semi-professional images, but they still stop short of being an all-in-one solution that offers acceptable image quality, stabilisation, and audio quality.  For this we still need a rig of some kind.
This thread is about creating hand-held rigs that deliver:
Good to very good image quality Sufficient stabilisation for hand-holding (movement is fine, but it can't be too jittery)  Good to very good sound quality that is directional (or at least separates the subject from the background) Fits in a pocket Minimal time to start recording (have little to no setup time) I'm building a rig around my new Sony X3000, but this thread could easily apply to anyone using a GoPro, DJI Osmo Action, or RX0, would also extend to point-and-shoot cameras, and even the smallest mirrorless cameras if the lens they choose is small enough (lots of pancake lenses would be borderline pocketable).
These might be an A-cam rig for vloggers, travel film-makers, backpackers, minimalists, or (like me) a B-cam setup for use in conjunction with a larger more complicated rig.
We've touched on these topics before, @Don Kotlos shared this great (borderline pocketable) example:

I mucked around with my GF3 (which lacks the required audio quality, or image quality):

and people are out there taking tiny cameras and making rigs that are 10x the size of the camera:

I'm still waiting for items to arrive, but I'm starting with the X3000, Rode Videomicro, an ebay microphone windsock which will help with wind noise but will also be a shock-mount, but have more bits on order, so updates to follow.

Who else here is pushing the limits of quality vs size?

@kye Definitely appreciate it! I'm just a hungry 22 year old kid. Its possibly the hyped of music. Sorta the new age going forward with sports videography vs the traditional NFL films chill slow motion edit.
Most people that want to work in sports have a degree so I have to work harder to stand out. A lot of pro teams and colleges teams would rather hire someone with a college degree and an average reel than someone with an excellent reel and no degree.
I've found shooting HLG is fantastic for harsh mid day game lighting. (I try to avoid LOG as much as possible).

It could be the music, I'm very musically oriented so that's definitely a factor.  I guess the other aspect is that your video had contrast between fast action and slow-motion, whereas the NFL one was all slow-motion.
I'm not surprised about the degree discrimination - that's a class thing - they want someone who is "one of them" and screw talent or ability.  Hiring incompetent people you went to school with is practically the theme song for the worlds elite.
On the GH5 I only have HLG on the 25p mode (and the 1080p50 10-bit mode IIRC), so the 4k50 and 1080p120 are Cine-D.  I'll have to play around with those profiles to see what latitude they give, and if doing things like reducing contrast will help.  More homework!
