Follow up to my post about upscaling and de-interlacing with QTGMC and then playing with Midtone detail in negative values.

Picked this frame since it's pretty classic DV and bad lighting. First frame is the original DV (in 720p timeline), then the upscaled frame and #3 the upscaled frame with -50 mid/detail, slightly lowered gain and lift and lowest possible glow. Screencap of Resolve at the end.

Not really something magic, still not great, but definitely better.

Last summer I managed to salvage old tapes before they went too bad. Didn't try to make the footage look pro or have any special "look", but to make new HD masters to save for the future (=pure sentimental reasons).
I tried AI scaling, but was very unsatisfied, look horrible. This thread is amazing and I went with this workflow: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=109259&sid=eb50d17426119095ce9038dba8e7c6a6

Good upscaling without artifacts or false details. Also the best (software) de-interlacer I've ever tried (I tried almost everyone there is), so many hidden details and perceived resolution that would disappear with other solutions.
So with a better codec, in standard HD resolutions (with square pixel aspect ratio) I retouched corrupt frames and did gentle colour and contrast balancing. My favourite tool in Resolve is "Midtone detail" with a negative value of -25 to -50, really helps with the harshness of the format. No need to work on the sharpness or the contrast for my needs for a soft retro-ish presentation.

I'm basing this on an interaction with him, plus his Twitter feed and likes, not the fact that he's on LBRY. I only mention it here because I mentioned previously he was on LBRY, and given the stuff he believes it makes sense why. While much of it disappeared as Q-anon accounts were banned, there's still enough to see on his account that shows he embraces toxic views. He literally supported the military stepping in to keep Trump in power.
When you believe and help spread disinformation and the same delusional stuff that caused the capital riots to happen, you're a part of the problem. This stuff should be called out in the filmmaking community.

Come on man, being on LBRY doesn't make you "Q-pilled". Tom Antos isn't the only one there, lots of others with non-political channels are there too! Would you call Curtis Judd a crazy Q-pilled madhatter?? Of course not! His YouTube videos are some of the most level headed, calmest, sensible, reasonable, and insightful videos there are.

But yet, it is SMART for Tom/Curtis/etc to have a presence on odysee.com as well. As you never know what might happen months, years into future when YouTube will censor you and remove your entire channel at less than a moment's notice.

Don't put all your bags into one basket.

Really was bummed out to find that Tom Antos is one of those delusional Q-pilled Trump supporters. It explains why he started posting stuff to LBRY, seems he probably found out about them from the far right vloggers that have moved there.

Really well shot and choreographed, but a little too close to the action sometimes, it felt a little tight in frame at times. I really wanted the camera to take a step or two back so I could see more of the choreography 🙂

Did you shot it all in 4k or mixed with HD for better RS? DoF didn't look so shallow, which I appreciate (I like to see things in focus, haha!) What focal lengths did you use?
How about the grading? Did you shoot log? Internal or external? Really like to know if it held up well on the internal codec in log 🙂

Ok, you win the internet battles. Honestly, I have had no ill intent towards you Andrew, this is your forum/blog and you should do as you please.
I just saw some self destructive behavior in this last year and it seemed out of character. I think that you have demonstrated that you have a ton of potential in this industry and I felt that you had been above some of the nonsense I have seen lately. I guess you can choose to be that dude, Trump did it in politics and says whatever he wants lol. My goal was to just hopefully get you to think a little about what you are doing. I'm sure you don't care and hopefully not, but I think you are severely limiting yourself.
Remember, true friends will tell you what you don't want to hear (not that I am or want to be, I just enjoyed your content in the past).

I just shot my first short in BW, love the way it captures light. So glad my camera LCD could show BW when shooting. Straight from timeline (proxies, so very heavily compressed) and a simple BW LUT.

Well, it’s been 8 months since I completed this and almost a year since I promised @mercer to post it once completed

I don’t really know what to say about this, it’s my first short and I wanted to try this medium after trying music, photography, drawing/painting and all sorts of writing in order to figure out myself and my depression.

It took me months to complete due to my mental state and lack of energy and I intended to post this sooner, but life can be a little too much sometimes. Or very often in my case.

Even though it was the hardest creative thing I’ve done in my life, (despite having a background or experience in most of the separate artforms that make up a film) I was really lost in the entire process and I developed love/hate relationship to it. I wanted to quit all the time when I wrote it, when prepping, when shooting and during the long, motivational drainage that is editing.

But I guess that’s also where the love was born. No matter all the mistakes I made, I could somehow save it and make a decent first short thanks to the editing by re-arranging the pieces I had. Throw away most of it, stretching what was left of it, slowing or speeding up some of it, playing some of it in reverse. Dubbing in new sound (needed, cause most of it was unusable. Note to self: Don’t forget sound!

I’ve tried to make another short since, but haven’t completed the shoot. I don’t know if I’ll finish that one, it’s just a silly comedy I made with my then girlfriend, now fiancée on my phone (This one was shot on the DVX200 before anyone asks, cameras are important on this forum apperantly, hehe) because she wanted me to make something less depressing, but I guess I’m just a gloomy guy, all my new ideas are based on my different malfunctions.

Hopefully I’ll work up enough energy to make another, I really want to.

Anyway, enough talking. I hope you’ll give this a go and give me some pointers, but go easy on me, okay?

    Now, pick you poison:

Correct, the song dates back at least to the 17th century (more likely the 16th) and the writer is unknown. It's one of the most performed songs, not just Irish folk singers/bands, but also rock, metal and punk and all have slightly different lyrics. Molly is sometimes called Jenny for instance.

Thin Lizzy made it popular back in the 70s with their rock cover and basically started the whole thing of combining Irish tunes with rock which sparkled The Pogues and the creation of celtic punk which lated led to Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys.

Everything from Irish folk to anime intros xD Anything with passion doing their thing with something to say
so that excludes basically everything mainstream where songs are written by someone else using the same sound/beat library as everyone else and processing the poor fame craving younglings' voices to bits because they can't sing.
