It would also be good if the dev could enable RAW on the secondary cam modules.

Would love to see the 5x periscope on P40 Pro spring into life.

Would be like having a S16mm turret again.

SO only the main camera works? Is that just your phone or a general thing?

  2. Where do you guys find info on supported phones? Looked at github and google app store, but can't find any list.

But then again, I've always been an Apple guy, never had anything else besides a Nokia 3310 😉

Not unhappy with the iPhone 13 Pro, but I like to play around with tech 🙂

  3. Follow up to my post about upscaling and de-interlacing with QTGMC and then playing with Midtone detail in negative values.

Picked this frame since it's pretty classic DV and bad lighting. First frame is the original DV (in 720p timeline), then the upscaled frame and #3 the upscaled frame with -50 mid/detail, slightly lowered gain and lift and lowest possible glow. Screencap of Resolve at the end.

Not really something magic, still not great, but definitely better.

  4. Last summer I managed to salvage old tapes before they went too bad. Didn't try to make the footage look pro or have any special "look", but to make new HD masters to save for the future (=pure sentimental reasons).

I tried AI scaling, but was very unsatisfied, look horrible. This thread is amazing and I went with this workflow: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=109259&sid=eb50d17426119095ce9038dba8e7c6a6

Good upscaling without artifacts or false details. Also the best (software) de-interlacer I've ever tried (I tried almost everyone there is), so many hidden details and perceived resolution that would disappear with other solutions.

So with a better codec, in standard HD resolutions (with square pixel aspect ratio) I retouched corrupt frames and did gentle colour and contrast balancing. My favourite tool in Resolve is "Midtone detail" with a negative value of -25 to -50, really helps with the harshness of the format. No need to work on the sharpness or the contrast for my needs for a soft retro-ish presentation.

  5. Really well shot and choreographed, but a little too close to the action sometimes, it felt a little tight in frame at times. I really wanted the camera to take a step or two back so I could see more of the choreography 🙂

Did you shot it all in 4k or mixed with HD for better RS? DoF didn't look so shallow, which I appreciate (I like to see things in focus, haha!) What focal lengths did you use?

How about the grading? Did you shoot log? Internal or external? Really like to know if it held up well on the internal codec in log 🙂

i dont even like metallic but im obsessed w this cover rn

its a rendition of an old irish folk song i think

Correct, the song dates back at least to the 17th century (more likely the 16th) and the writer is unknown. It's one of the most performed songs, not just Irish folk singers/bands, but also rock, metal and punk and all have slightly different lyrics. Molly is sometimes called Jenny for instance.

Thin Lizzy made it popular back in the 70s with their rock cover and basically started the whole thing of combining Irish tunes with rock which sparkled The Pogues and the creation of celtic punk which lated led to Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys.

  7. Everything from Irish folk to anime intros xD Anything with passion doing their thing with something to say :)

so that excludes basically everything mainstream where songs are written by someone else using the same sound/beat library as everyone else and processing the poor fame craving younglings' voices to bits because they can't sing.

  8. How about getting this thread going again along with the 200 dollar challenge? :)

Been playing around with ML on the EOS M, not quite sure how I feel about it. Lovely images, but ease of use and ergonomics... I miss my 1000D xD

Maybe try the 70D with ML, but it's still a time consuming workflow and I'm not sure I should be in the raw business on my level of filmmaking (I don't even shoot raw when I take stills).

Maybe @Mattias Burling can post some files from the R since I liked it so much in the blind test? Or anyone with a C100? They seems pretty cheap nowadays and I would love decent autofocus as a one man band.

Or anyone with a XT3/30? @BrunoCH or @androidlad? The Fuji XTs remind me of my Minolta X-700 and might be a good fit?

EDIT: or maybe an Olympus E-M1 II? @DaveAltizer and @nigelbb wanna chip in?

Going back quite a bit, this showed up on MTV Asia back in 2001 and grabbed my eye for it's simplicity... which I somehow found fresh. Or maybe it was the woman ;)

The Asian music videos usually are very simple unless it's the heavier genres like punk and rock. But that's something I really enjoy, especially with lighter music. This song is from the Ghibli movie "The cat returns" and there is something very comforting in the music video's simplicity that go hand in hand with the song and the artist.

If Canon is working for you, then go for it!  There are more important things than just image.  I picked all BM cameras but I own a GH5 because of the IBIS.

Shoot with what you have, upgrade when your work is being limited by something and only upgrade to fix the things that are actually causing you issues.

Of course, I'm pretty new to filmmaking and videos, so I need a camera do begin with since I just borrowed one for my first short. Been playing with my phone for almost a year now, but's it's not quite doing it for me :)

  11. Surprising results indeed. I didn't intend to pick a certain number of cameras, just pick which image I liked. I picked 3-4 from each scene and all turned out to be the EOS R!

Here I been researching cameras left and right and turned every stone and been looking at everything except Canon because everyone hates them, haha, and in a blind test I preferred Canon. And the ones I've researched the most BMPCC/BMMCC I disliked the most O_o

Perhaps I should just stay with Canon and upgrade from my 1000D since I like the colors, ergonomics and feel at home with the menues, etc. Magic lantern seems kind of difficult if you're non-techie person like myself, so maybe skip the M/70D decision all together and go for the R/RP ?

  12. anyone care to weigh in on my decision to go with either 70D or EOS-M for playing around with ML? I been trying to read as much as possible here and on the ML forum, but let's face it: I'm not a techie by a long shot and can't keep up without a visual step by step guide.

Obvious differences are the articulating screen and AF on the 70D (and I already have a couple of EF lenses with my 1000D), but it's roughly double the price of the M on eBay.

So what are the current stable-ish raw capabilities? Also I'm not a slow motion guy, but I do like longer takes and got some of my grandfather's 16mm lenses I'd like to try out (are there even C-mount to EF-mount adapter around?). Battery life?
