I need to test this dual gain ISO more as it’s new to me but for anything under 1600 which also includes everything outdoors during daylight hours, 100.
Indoors, anything that is typically 1600 or over, just set the thing at 4000 and be happy.
With f2 or faster primes, should work just fine?
Maybe with anything slower than f4 after dark might be pushing it at ‘just’ 4000?
I remember my first digital ‘pro’ camera maxed at 1600 but was pretty awful at 800 😂

The s1h has All-I codecs. The s1 and s5 dont have all-I but their actual image is pretty damn comparible and cost like $1800 used.
If auto focus isn't a concern, just get an S1 with the vlog upgrade, it's getting 6k 10bit and 4k 60 10bit internal and 6k raw external in a few months.

That really did not look good to me. Pretty scenery sure, but the image itself didn't blow me away. Overly sharpened with a high shutter speed, surprised he didn't use an ND on it.

@Walter H Thanks man! These particular shots were with Zeiss ZE lenses, with a 35mm Distagon on the RED for the wide shot and an 85mm Planar ZE on on the S1.

@TomTheDP Honestly not nearly as much of a DR difference between the RED and S1 as I would expect, at least in the limited comparisons I have made between the two cameras.  I'm sure in a very high DR situation, especially with the red raw, that it would win out, but I have always been really impressed with the DR of the S1.

@Robert Patts I know that "motion cadence" is a big thing for some people, I mean for me personally, the S1 more than suits my needs and is a whole lot of bang for the buck, and with it I have gotten some of the most pleasing images of my career.

In my experience, I think the  biggest factors that contribute to a "video" look vs a more cinematic, filmic one -- and not just on the S1, but on any camera -- is usually a combination of not respecting the 180 degree shutter rule, and using glass without character.

Super sharp, clinical, modern glass, such as Sigma's art series or Panny's L-mount glass is always crazy detailed edge-to-edge, but throw something with more character and imperfections like a helios 44-2 or something like that, adding diffusion filters, etc. and keeping. a nice, filmic shutter speed, for me that gross video feeling goes away really fast. Purely subjective, of course. For me the S1 delivers cinematic mojo in spades.

This news is so good, I'm trading my S5 for a used S1 and the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 and a spare battery. This will fit nicely with my S1H and I also get the deeper buffer and the no time limit 10-bit recording, as well as internal 5.9K!!!

I'm honestly stunned but what they're including. I really wanted the AF improvements (more for stills than anything else) and hope we might get 4k60/10bit but I never expected this. Even after all of the new camera announcements I'd still choose an S1.

New firmware announced by Panasonic for the S1 (as well as some for S1R and S1H) coming November 24th.
The good news is that the new AF system (implemented in the S5) is coming November 24th. Red recording status frame indicator (Yeah!!!).
They also announced that firmware is coming in the first half of 2021 for the S1 which will allow for 5.9K RAW over hdmi, and 5.9K / C4k internal recording. Finally 4K 60p internal will be 10-bit 4:2:0 instead of current 8-bit 4:2:0
All the same, I am thinking of either "downgrading" to an S5 or instead going for...
    ...an R6.

I was extremely rude to what seems to be a really nice person in Matti...and I feel bad. I have nothing against him personally but I have some (obviously) strong thoughts about the type of content he uploads.
More often than not I side with Andrew on this stuff. If you have built an audience and a name for yourself the LEAST you could do is be authentic and try something unique. To just pander and make 10 B-Roll videos with fake surprise face thumbnails is almost non sensical.
It shows your sense of priorities. That you care more about fame/numbers/likes than you do anything artistic or creative. And that is a massive turn off.

Matti Hoopla uploads content that is watched once on a phone and then forgotten. He’s not making narrative stuff.
Things you put time/effort into require the best visual medium for longevity. This is why Nolan and Tarantino shoot on 70mm. If you don’t give a shit about your content then shoot it in whatever is easiest for your audience to slop down right now. If you care about it and want it to stand the test of time you go for the best.
This is not a complex issue. If discount Peter McKinnon is your example then I think you need to pick a different hill to die on. These guys are not filmmakers.

@MrSMW Yes, for me it would have been perfect with full HDMI, which the S1 has. S1 on the other hand needs a paid Upgrade for 10 bit and Vlog and still does not have 10bit for 4K60, which the S5 has.
Indeed, so close. I guess i will have to pay the 200 EUR for the update and still be without 10bit for the 4K60 as of now. S1H has both but is too expensive for me.

Now you're getting aesthetic confused with aspect ratio.
On 70mm light is drawn across the frame differently. There's a larger than life feel to it.
Something about having the compression of a 50mm focal length while maintaining a wider image closer to 35mm gives a feeling, a look.
Same goes for animorphic, it has it's own "look". It produces a bigger image, even when viewed on a small screen.
I could tell Joker was shot on the Alexa 65 after seeing the trailer.
It just had that feeling. It had that big image look.
It's hard to describe, but I remember having conversations in another forum a few years back and someone was telling me about how human eyes can't see more than 24fps and 4k isnt something humans can resolve. Which we all know is 1000% false.
I guess the point is, just because you cant see the "look" doesnt mean it's not there.
Cinematography is subjective enough without telling people they're wrong for liking something.
You could go grab two different films, one shot on 35mm and another on 16mm and theres a good chance I'd be able to immediately tell which is which.
Yes, its hard to tell when different sensor sizes are cut together. MFT is good enough for any professional/narrative work. In a lot of cases full frame might even be overkill. I just like the look of full frame. It's as simple as that.
You dont have to notice the look I'm speaking of, but I do.

Of course. It should be a free market. There's anti-trust laws against collaborative market fixing and segmentation, nobody wants cartel behaviour.
But what's going on here is not a balance and it's not even really a free market.
It is a destructive race to demolish other Japanese camera companies, and Canon / Sony are the number one suspects.
A race to appeal to the masses at the same time as significantly raising margins and pricing the average consumer out.
A race to lock-in customers to specific lens mounts, and charge extortionate money for optics.
If the consumer could freely choose more innovative products, and more countries and more diversification and more niches were catered for, then it'd truly be a free market.
It's about less diversity, less competition, this isn't a win for us. If Sony and Canon succeed in killing Panasonic, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus, Pentax and even Sigma's fledgling full frame camera business, a duopoly will be created like AMD vs Intel.
Personally I don't want this. I don't want a camera as dull as the A7C to kill APS-C Fuji X-Pro sales.
Fuji X-T4 and X-Pro 3 offer so much more innovation than the A7C.
    They are strangling themselves.
The camera range the A7C kills is the A6000 series.
By using the A6600 form factor for the A7C, Sony is sending a message.
That range is going full frame, more expensive, higher margins.
But no new specs because they have to maintain the high margins. Same specs as the old camera (A7 III). Little investment in it, not even in new menus (crazy).
Sure I am all for the concept of small, full frame, compact mirrorless cameras.
Look at the Sony RX1R II. So much more innovative than the A7C. Look at Sigma Fp.
Making an interchangeable lens high-end RX1R II with pop-up EVF is one thing.
Slapping a bigger sensor in an A6600 and calling it quits, just to kill off other Japanese manufacturer sales, is quite another.
And the prices of the Sony lenses is quite self defeating.
But it is the soulless clinical blandness that bothers me the most.
    In this industry...
Do we really want to end up with a dominant Sony and their soulless shooting experience, boring ergonomics, and Canon with their marketing games?
    Just those two?
Rather than do something genuinely interesting in the APS-C market like Fuji has done with their rangefinder style mirrorless cameras, Sony has simply slapped a full frame sensor in one of the most unergonomic and boring bodies, it's the most unimaginative, most risk averse way to kill the crop sensor market I've ever seen.
Customers will likely buy it instead of an X-Pro 3 or X-E3, because hey it's full frame and Tony Northrup likes it.
