I watched Philip Blooms sequel film, and I came to the exact same conclusion- it looks thin. Same as the sII. At the right fingers any footage can be fixed and improved, I'm just not convinced Sony have made the leap into 'doesn't need to be touched and it looks right' territory.

You ain't gonna see what the footage look like just from youtube, and the a7s3's slog 3 and 2 is meant to match the fx9, and from the slog samples I've downloaded it seems great, especially if you use the right rec709 coversion lut like the alister venice or phantom luts. And the dynamic range of the a7s3 is the same as the c300mk3 with the dual gain enabled. And it still manages to beat out the fs7 even at 16000 iso.  The a7s3 also won't overheat from testing, since Philip Bloom literally managed to record over 8 hours of footage in a hot room before he gave up on the overheating tests. It also has a flip screen, ibis, great eye tracking af even at 240fps. With the xlr module it also can record 4 channel sound, 2 from xlr and 2 from 3.5mm. And of course there are internal nd adapters for e mount to ef if you want to go that route as well.

Sony's IQ continues to struggle, in my opinion. The FX9 looks better than anything else they've done (outside of the Venice), but from samples, the A7sIII seems to look similar to the A7sII, FS5, etc. Skintones are meh, image feels thin, and in general just doesn't have a very pleasing look.
Also, this will have internal NDs, won't overheat, has two XLRs, etc - so not sure how it won't be much more usable than the A7sIII.

So the red komodo for 1500 dollars more is going to have:
1, True internal Redcode raw at 8:1 in mq mode and 4-3:1 at hq mode
    2, Internal 4k and 2k prores recording
    3, Global Shutter
    3, Much better dynamic range
    4, 6k
    5, Red ipp2 colorscience
5, Better lowlight then the c200

However, the canon is going to have:
    1, Internal nd filters
2, full sensor 4k 120 compared to cropped 4k60 on the komodo
    3, canon c series reliability
    4, Better DPAF
    5, 1500 dollars cheaper

Personally I don't see the point of the canon, since the a7s3 will blow the canon's image quality and usuability out of the water, while being 1000 dllars less, in a much smlaller mirrorless form factor. At least the red has global shutter and internal raw and 6k. The canon just sound like another 1dc all over again.

GS gives you locked off shots if you are steady, but even if there is motion it is much more organic and pleasing - yes the motion is like film. Ibis is unpredictable and you cannot rely on it for sure 100%. I know with my GS camera, the way the image looks when moved craps all over anything with ibis. It is pleasing and smooth whether i pan, walk, etc.

Because they will make a focal reducer for it to be used with EF glass, which is what everyone has. It is the best of both worlds, where you get FF look and the small size and frame rate capabilities of a super-35 sensor. The benefits here are that the form factor should allow continuous recording in all frame rates and all conditions unlike the a7siii. Plus the advantages of internal nd, battery life and audio ports.
I doubt it will have ibis if they are advertising it in their cinema line. I know it is controversial but there is clearly a lot of resistance to ibis in the cinema lines of most brands.
For people like me who don't shoot photos, I am just glad they are steering away from the hybrid form factor of the a7siii.

Why would I want an RF camera for besides using RF glass for it, which is full frame? That is the unique selling point of RF mount camera, how does crop sensor make any sense? Adapt EF lenses? Why not go for c200 then? Or may be a7S III, which is more capable and full frame?
I chose my wording having that in mind: "no substitute for what R5 was promised to be" 😅 R5 was supposed to be video all the way as well, and a proper RF camera too (Full Frame, just as the lenses).

People get easily wowed when someone has a command over numbers.
You can't do a proper review in bite sized pieces. For example he says ibis is bad and then shows one small clip. Here is a full range of tests which shows exact opposite.
Gerald said that he thinks color on a7siii is comparable to Arri Alexa. I will let people decide what that means and what to believe.
Edit: if I am reviewing these cameras, I am trashing the absolute hell out of them - not just saying bad marketing.

Andrew specifically made a request to avoid squabbling, yet you've ignored him, accused me of being a troll and telling me to shut up. After I just posted a helpful video.
This is not your forum, it's Andrew's, so I suggest you refrain from telling other users to shut up and comply with Andrew's request to avoid arguments - which is exactly what you have started here whilst accusing me of derailing which is exactly what you continue to do.

I say again, quit this nonsense and let's get back to the cameras.

the non-hq mode is softer than even the eos r which is already soft to begin with. it is really not the best. but if you are just uploading vids to youtube then no one will notice unless it is camera nerds pixel-peeping. People will notice the ibis, color and autofocus more than sharpness. So maybe it is passable for low quality content online.
the problem is you have to pay $4500!!! for that privilege. Helll noooooo!!!!
But if you are rich or whatever and dont care about pure image quality then the other perks of the camera would make it a joy to use over the other offerings. The ibis on this camera is insane even for m43 standards.
So i see rich people buying this camera (who don't know or care about the quality difference in video i.e. non-pros), while videographers purchase the a7siii and s1h.
Meanwhile, the r6 is just an abortion. I don't know who would pay that much to buy something that can't even shoot in 4k these days.

Says who? What from I read, you can take photos AND use the 1080 & cropped / non-HQ 4K modes (that are still way better than compressed to death YT videos) all day. Anything else especially concerning photos would be a first, and a huge failure.
4K+ streaming is still a joke anyway, all we are seeing is the higher bitrate services reserve. I have an interface traffic graph running at all times on my PC acting as a router, the bitrates are laughable. You could upconvert by at least one resolution step and probably no one would notice..

I guess the mistake Canon made was giving the samples out primarily to a vocal minority of videographers. There are real issues like a fixed viewfinder eyepiece that cannot be replaced by the magnifying version I was using for more than 11 years. Or the fact that the ergonomics are limited for left-eyed shooters (face obstructs access to some controls on these smaller camera bodies). Or baked RAW files below ISO800 with baseline noise reduction applied. Or the huge issue that DPAF cannot sense horizontal detail at all.
I generally do not watch video "reviews" because reading is 3x faster and I cannot stand listening to someone reading his text at "single speed", but I bet not a single one of these YTers has addressed anything of this.

Must have been tough for you 7 years ago lol.
The other cameras aren't for you then. You need a camera that does a job. That's fine too. Im sure the sony will be great for that. Just let's not delude ourselves here into thinking the sony creates anything but a generic and boring image that will be seen all over youtube. That is fine for most who do not care about cinematography or art. Sharp 120p is more important for your purposes.

    Absolutely.
You know why I put the R5 on the table?
    8K > 6K -> large format for hybrid use
    4K 120fps
    IBIS
    AF
Because art is also opportunity and the right tool is the one you can have with you and use it. If for some reason, you won't be able to get that shot just fine, goes right away to the basket.

Bmpcc 6k is the best bang for your buck. Cinematography is an art. The Blackmagic makes the most beautiful image and gives life and art to the image. If I were a painter, the 6k would be the brightest colour on my palette. The others are garish and utilitarian.
Ibis, autofocus should not be considerations unless you have a job to do. But they have nothing to do with the art of cinematography, which has never needed these things and which is detrimental in most cases.
So it is illogical for two people to argue over which camera is better when their objectives are different.
A painter will go through the most trouble to get a unique and beautiful image. He will not pick a tool which allows him to make a pretty picture with the least effort but one that looks identical to others.

Not sure if this video was posted, scrolling through the last few pages its mostly S1h/Netflix arguments that don't seem to relate to the Sony at all. As to the a7s3, if you need reliable AF, cameras like the Zcams, the Blackmagic's and likely the S1h are not something people are considering, its a completely different type of camera and shooting experience. Nothing is ever going to change that until they have reliable AF. I need AF for my work, none of those will ever be a part of my kit, and I'm obviously not alone. The excitement over this and the R5/6 is because you're combining great IQ with great AF with bitrates that many Sony shooters have wanted for years. Continually injecting cameras like Blackmagic's or Netflix approval into the discussion is just noise. Nobody is buying the a7s3 or a Pocket 4k for that matter to shoot the next season of Ozark.
You're buying this over other options if you're already invested in the E-mount ecosystem and want the best video option without having to lug around one of the larger FS/FX cameras - or if you want reliable AF for your work.
Bonus the E-mount has the widest selection of native AF lenses that's more comprehensive than all other FF options combined. And with all the 3rd party support combining MF and AF lenses from Zeiss/Tamron/Sigma/Voigtlander/Samyang and others, that gap will keep getting wider. Second bonus if you shoot stills, the E-mount has you covered with a some of the best photo options money can buy.
I put this on my 65" TV, this guy put it through its paces and shot tons of 120p, no surprise since its one of the standout features. Just wish the poster had enabled captions - even YT's sometimes weird autocaption - so we can get a partial translation. But this looks like a proper review.
