The V4 email should be out to everyone; if you haven't received it please let me know. A month ago, my father was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer at the same time that the virus situation was taking off, and life was thrown into disarray. March is colon cancer awareness month, and we are aware now (get screened every 10 years, starting at 50)

The GH5S is, at last, supported. V4:

    Emotive Color Component ('EC709')

Much blessings to papa Mack! Thats much more important. Dont care if there is delays with the updates. Fam is much more important

Hello (and sorry for my english). I am waiting to see some examples of the new GH5s version of the Ghalex lut, but in the meantime I tried to use the official Arri Log to Rec709 Lut included in Davinci and I have found that it works really good as a starting point. I haven´t done any color space conversion, just applied the lut, and I like the colors much more than with the Vlog to rec709 from Panasonic (that I think Panasonic should  have developed specifically for each camera model colour science). Then a few tweaks in exposure, wb and contrast, and finally another lut (a 709 Kodak Vision from Impulz) and grain to get this result with direct sunlight mostly, the worst situation for the gh5s highlights rollof capabilities. I´m very happy with this first test.

    Man! This looks really good

@Sage might have better info on this, but from my experience, the 1080 out of camera vs 4K downscaled to 1080 in post are nearly identical, something very rarely found. I shoot 4K for most projects still as I have the processing capabilities and want to future proof. But if you aren't concerned about it, 1080 is very wonderful out of the GH5. On the advantage side, 1080 out of the GH5 gives 60p in 10 bit, and a more bang for your buck bitrate. I've been using this GHAlex process for quite some time now, and couldn't be happier with it. I feel like it gave the GH5 the soul it was missing.

your promo looks great. I agree with you on downscaling to 1080. downscaling has a ton of advantages one of which i love: smaller / negligible visible noise on the 1080 timeline

@Sage I remember you saying that 1080p is the sweet spot for the GH5, and GHAlex transform, is there a technical reason for that like better highlight detail with the 200mbps all-i 1080p files?

I'm devising a pretty aggressive plan for a slate of short films over the next year and as much as I love my 5D3 and ML Raw, it's not necessarily the best tool for every project I am planning. As I'm sure you know, the freedom that IBIS affords certain productions can be an invaluable tool, but it's only so valuable.

Since I still live in a 2K world, I see little need for 4K in my films. At the current price of the GH5, it's instantly a contender as a second camera option if I'm not losing too much IQ with the GH5.

Also, with the GHAlex process, is there any benefit to shooting in CineLikeD over vLogL? I assume there isn't, but I figured it was worth an ask.

wondering why not opt for the P4K instead

    Very nice!

From this morning, here is an interesting one. This is GHa Tun v4 extreme gamut finished with the new system (Tungsten extreme gamut is the most difficult scenario). GHa v4 Tun actually outperforms the Alexa in extreme red (Arri has the edge in blue though). Also note the slight banding apparent in blue/cyan/green (VLog All-I), a non-issue on the P4K  (GH5 on the bottom):

Legend man! When will the update be available? also any update to the daylight version with the new system as well?

Looks incredible. Lighting and framinng. looking forward to the video. Im sure John Brawley is taking notice. BM should reach out to you to collaborate

  6. This is lovely news. wondering why u didnt post about this before. Welcome the new changes implemented. This camera will absolutely shine. Just bought the new portkeys monitor to go with my p4k which has been doing wonders on few gigs. I am excited to use it on my feature shooting 2020. The GHalex has served me well

Wish there were more examples of this with the p4k but I know there will be a lot coming out soon.

Sage, you are the main man

  7. DUDE,  people only paid for the Gh5 lut not the S! I dont recall Alex having a preorder for the S version. There shouldn't be anything to complain about.

You used the word "entitled" in an earlier post. That's how the likes of you sound on this thread  - "Entitled" for "Good money"

It's beyond ridiculous. Like Jeremy said, Folks probably  don't understand what goes into this.

Let's Allow the genius to create, refine and continually develop the Luts in PEACE

I am in agreement with you!!!

I don't understand the rebellious-teen-diva-ish tone in some of the demands of this thread that the LUT be ready at their command.  They probably don't understand that Sage is  a one man R&D team, so he has to take his time to fine tune the luts. Plus as someone pointer earlier, updates are going to roll out soon and we don't know how that might affect the LUT as well.  Sage probably has other film demands to attend to, perhaps a full time job? He owes no one any deadline schedule.

From the numbers, it sounds like its going to have a smaller pixel pitch. Grant noted that it would be 'almost identical', or something to that effect, but we'll have to see

cool...for the p4k, would the p4Alex be applied to braw or prores? Or can be applied to both?

Well, I've certainly blown through my own deadlines. Best steer clear of further prediction until the exact date can be guaranteed beyond a doubt. Progress on the P4K is good (which directly benefits the S, and 5).

Here is the first 'P4Ka in the wild':

    EC MAIN

    EC LINEAR

Genius shit as usual, Sage! Cant wait

With the new 6K announced, should they be the same sensor, just different sizes, this would be dope!

Also with the current p4k being developed, is the lut applied to the Vlog or prores footage? Or perhaps, it doesn't matter?

  11. Dope work as usual Sage!

Selfish and unnecessary question but will there be a 4000 K or 4200 K  WB option for those of us who love the bluish and greenish hues in daylight?

Great work regardless... can't wait for the p4k version

I have been using GHa on my P4k until Alex has the new lut ready. Thought i'd share a few tests - I feel like it is working quite well, and handles over-saturated reds and blues pretty nicely. Looking forward to the official lut :)

Man! Great pics! Whats your process of converting from BMD Film to Vlog?

Those look pretty amazing as is. I finished the first tungsten conversion today (mostly). Still have some refinement to do. Here is an idea of it, a sample slice from both cams:

Sure; it depends on what you'd like. Fuji and BMD have very good, usable color. I personally will use P4K with GH5; I hope to have EC to do a production this summer.

8 bit is tricky; I'd prefer to only support 10 bit cameras, though I will try to find a way that will give viable production level results with 8-bit. I think Log is not really in the cards there.

Bit of really cool news; last weekend, the director of a film starring Josh Hartnett wrote to me to say that they were using the GH5 with EC as a pick-up cam alongside Alexa Minis and XTs.

He said that a senior Star Wars colorist was doing the grade, and said that 'everybody was very impressed' with it. I was pretty thrilled with that

    Sage you made it!!

  14. 15 hours ago, Maxbrand said:

Thanks! Actually I just ignore a lot of the stuff that Sage writes in the white paper. For example here I had white balance at something like 4000 and a light bulb with 6000k WB, nothing is done to it other than using the excellent GhA-LUT. Mostly this decision is because I seldom get the benefit of grading the things I shoot, and therefore I try to do as many decisions as possible in camera so that the people in post don't do their own version of it.

I'm happy that you took this frame specifically because it is lit only with a cheap e27 LED light bulb from the hardware store for something like 8€ and their phone screens that I made them turn up to maximum. This whole short was done in like 6 hours and I went with a lighting style that was super simple, quite fun to try to figure out different looks in the same room in a short amount of time!

Thats freaking amazing! I am going to experiment with shooting 4000 in daylight witht he GhA. I use to shoot  4200  in Daylight for those bluish hues or 7000 for the yellowish golden tones but reading the document had me apprehensive. I'll definitely do my tests

Shot this using GHa for CineD with my G9. Works quite well after some exposure adjustments. Had to bring down the highlights quite a bit since I am more used to ETTR. Doesnt look as good as other examples within this thread, but I currently dont use any diffusion at all.

looks better than some gh5 vids on youtube! great stuff

I find that using the pre and then working as if I had shot in V-log works very well when using HLG. I was somewhat forced into this workflow when I bought the Ninja V because of the whole video levels thingy making v-log impossible to use if you want a reliable preview on the monitor. I find HLG more or less as good anyway though, so doesn't really matter much to me.

Some examples of using HLG with GhA:

Man! Really great work!!  Im interested in this particular frame! What was the white balance? Is the Blue hue post color work? If so what version of the lut did you use as base?
