If you’d asked me the very same question only a few years ago, I’d have unhesitatingly recommended getting a speed booster and some APS-C or full frame glass. More recently, and I’d have suggested the fastest native primes you could afford. Now, I believe the Veydra Mini Primes are the best long term investment. Not that micro 4/3 is going anywhere, but the Veydras have economical user switchable mounts (Fuji X, Sony E, u4/3 and C mounts) that can be swapped in minutes.

Interesting Jon, thanks! Do you recommend the Veydras just because of the switchable mounts?  If I were to pass on the Veydras, which lenses would you recommend next? And which would you choose between the Sigma 18-35 with speedbooster or Panasonic 12-35 (for video).

  2. Thanks all!

I'm using my speedboosted Sigma 30mm 1.4 for 80% or maybe 90% of shots.

I own the Olympus 12-40mm but find the Sigma's image a lot more appealing (and creatively, at least for me, there are advantages in using a fixed focal lens). So most of the time I round off the Sigma with the excellent Olympus 12mm f2 and a speedboosted Nikon E 75-150 f3.5 if I need the tele reach or a zoom shot. Pretty workable, light, and somewhat affordable setup.

I see they also have a Sigma 30 1.4 for MFT... would you recommend that over the FF one speedboosted?

Agree with the above posters about the Sigma 18-35mm - it's heavy as a truck, but superb color and sharpness imo, better than any of the native zooms as far as I'm concerned.

Jon, love your videos.  if you had to get just 3 lenses for GH5 video, what would you get?

  3. Thanks all for the advice. For those who have gone with both native and speedbooster route... what are your thoughts on the value of dual IS for handheld?  Is it a lot more valuable than just IBIS say with a speedbooster? Its just tough to decide between 12-35 and Sigma 18-35.

  4. Hey everyone, I posted this in the lens section but didn't receive an answer so I'll try here (hopefully that is allowed).

New here but I've read through several posts and I'm learning a lot!  I just got my GH5 and want to pick up a few lenses.  I am just so indecisive and would love some advice from the great community here.  I plan on using the GH5 99% for video, in a combination of travel videos (both cinematic and sometimes vlogging), real estate films, weddings, and short films.  I like the idea of starting out with 3 lenses and would love one of them to be an UWA for real estate and establishing shots like the PL 8-18, Tokina 11-16, Laowa 7.5, or Voigtlander 10.5. The next lens I'd love to have would be the main work-horse, the one that I'd use most of the time and preferably a zoom even if small like the 12-35, PL 12-60, or Sigma 18-35.  And lastly, I'm open to either a portrait-type prime like the PL 42.5 1.2 or more of a zoom like the 35-100 or even higher.  That last category is wide open for options, just looking for lenses you guys think are must haves for yourselves and would love to hear why!

Having such a tough time deciding between a lens like the 12-35 or 12-60... and the Sigma 18-35.  Dual IS and smaller that could fit on my Zhiyun Crane... or 1.2 constant aperture in the Sigma with metabones but just bigger.  Would it make any sense even to get both?

Pretend price isn't an option, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks.
