  1. I'm looking to buy a pretty obscure lens. The only one I've found is from a guy who inherited it from his father in law, and he doesn't know what camera system it's for. He sent me this picture, and I think it's for Canon EF. But want to double check... This lens is also made for Nikon, Pentax and a couple other mounts.

  2. Thanks all - Colour matching isn't really an issue. Both cameras will record in the same codec, and with the same colour science. Some tweaking will be necessary, but they will be pretty close to start with.

My main concern was background compression and the softness / vignetting in the corners on the FF angle. But it seems like that won't be causing any big distractions.

  3. This is a hypothetical situation, so assume the lenses are absolutely identical in every way, and the footage will be graded to a perfect match.

    Gear list:

    2 x Canon FD 28mm F1.8

    Full frame camera

    MFT camera

If I adapt the lenses to have one on each camera, aside from crop factor, will the lens characteristics be the same? Or will the MFT have 'sharper' corners, since it's only using the middle part of the lens? Would this even more noticeable, or worth thinking about?

An example setup would be an interview in a very small room, with both cameras next to each other. The FF would be the wide/mid shot, and MFT a close.

  4. To me, it's starting to look like you should pickup the cheapest one that will arrive soonest.

I think the 6kPro probably has more life in it, and will receive a number of updates. But that's a guess. FS7 won't get any more updates.

If you're not in any rush, wait for BMD next announcement, and see what that brings. At the very least, both models your considering will drop in price during that time too.

  5. which lenses do you use. And how will each system benefit those lenses?

If it's exclusively EF lenses, I'd go with a native mount over an adaptor.

As for solo shooting interviews with no AF. That's how I shoot and often with the Sigma 18-35 at 35 f2(ish) on a booster. Very rarely have I come back with out of focus footage. And when they lean forwarsa# I'd rather them go out of focus, than have weird hunting issues. Secondly, if you have a monitor for yourself, you can adjust focus over your shoulder very easily. In my experience, it's a non-issue.

Shallow dof is only really a problem if you're very close to the subject. Once you have 2m between the subject and the lens, mf is easy to keep on top of.

That said, Sony focus peaking sucks balls, and I can never trust it. BMD focus assist is very reliable for me.

EF mount on a Panasonic camera was a bit odd. Should have been an adapter at most. It's as if Panasonic recognised the reason for the C300 popularity and tried to copy it, but didn't give a compelling enough reason for EF lens owners to switch from Canon.

To add to this... The EVA1 was one of, if not the first to enable raw over HDMI. But then they're competing with the cheaper(?) Ursa Mini Pro, which also has EF mount, but internal raw and a great viewfinder if you want it.

Was the EVA1 also the first close enough to 6k camera on the market?

  7. Out of the two, I'd personally go with the 6k Pro, and spend the difference on a nice lens / some kind of stabilisation, since its a lighter camera.

With that said, if you're in no immediate rush, I would also wait for BMD's next camera. Their last two releases were the 6kpro and the Ursa 12k. I think the next release will be somewhere in the middle. Maybe a box camera with their custom sensor, even if it's 'limited' to a measly 8k, it'd be worth waiting for.

They're not going to outshine the 12k anytime soon, and they also won't release a lesser camera than the 6kpro. So I would continue to use the 4k for another 6 or 7 months until the next announcement. If you don't like the next camera, the 6kpro will drop in price and you can get it then.

Content-aware erase tool for video, 3D tracking of most objects via Neural Engine, a "AI" assisted color matching tool that is a 90% solution for quick and dirty color matching

Didn't the content erase and smart colour matching appear in DR16?

Or was that something kind of similar, but not quite the same?

I watched a few of the videos on color grading and a few on the new features in DR 17. Very comprehensive for things like color grading and general use. I do wish they provided more in depth training for Fusion.

I'm not sure if they're new, but there are 2 videos about using Fusion, both a little shy of an hour long, as well as a free pdf book. the videos and the book also come with Lesson Files so you can work along with the program. I find it completely amazing that they offer the software completely free, and then seemingly all the training you need to get started, also for free.

If you have the time and patience then watching the videos might be good value.

Not sure what value certification would give you unless you're a pro looking for work though, and you're likely to have to re-certify every new version.

Did you try looking at the PDFs? Although I have some knowledge and have used Resolve for complete projects, I'm starting on book one page one. Although, I am speeding through the first few lessons. reading the whole thing, but only physically doing the bits I didn't know about. That way the lessons they estimate at an hour, take about 15 minutes.

As for the certification, I don't think I'll do it for every version, but since it's not a 'required' thing anyway, I don't think you really need to. Just pick up the new features along the way. Where I am, LinkedIn is a huge part of getting hired, so having certifications on there can definitely help.

Anyway, since there's the thread about how bad Premiere has become, I thought I'd draw some attention to the training, for those like myself, looking to switch totally to Resolve.

  10. Has anyone here tried the official DaVinci Resolve training that Blackmagic offer? From looking briefly, it seems pretty comprehensive, and completely free. Then you can take the tests and get certifications at the end of each 'chapter'. I've downloaded the files and I'm looking forward to starting, but figured I'd ask if anyone else has tried it, and can offer pros and cons over some other options out there.

  11. I just updated to V3.0 and wow, what a great update. Every button on the camera is now customisable.

With my setup above, changing any settings in the quick menu means moving the VA out the way. But now I can have ISO on the front dial, shutter on the left and right buttons, volume on up and down. Then all the buttons along the bottom can be a whole host of over functions.

To top it off, it also gives real 24p UHD cDNG. Jeez.

  12. Yesterday I unexpectedly shot quite a bit with my FP and 5inch Video Assist. Man, what a combo! It's so small, and lightweight. The person I was filming told me half the time, he didn't even notice I was rolling, and of course when I put it next to my Pocket4k footage, it grades exactly the same, or possibly better. Very easy to match.

I was thinking of selling the FP, because for the types of things I shoot, cDNG is just not viable (longform interviews). But then a deal for the VA12g came up, and I thought it'd give it a try. Now I'm completely sold. With this setup, I've turned a great camera that's was no fun for me to use, into a very fun, take anywhere cine-cam.

My shoot yesterday was very unexpected, but I happened to have the camera in my satchel with a 28mm f2.8 FD lens. It was a dream setup, that I'm basically going to take everywhere from now on.

  13. Interesting article, that unfortunately I don't have time to finish reading right now. I'll definitely come back when I can give it my full attention!

However, I wanted mention that there are paparazzi laws in France. I'm not sure if it's a result of this subject, or if it was already the case / brought in by something else. But it certainly shows something can be done about those parasites.

They should just make the screen AND EVF each a $500 extra, and reshape the body into something more like RED/Kinefinity/ZCam/BGH1.

Whatever they do, people will complain. If they did what you suggest, like with the Micro, a lot of people would complain about having to rig it up because 'it doesn't even have a monitor!?!'.

So, instead they put the screen on, a nice big one and people complain that it doesn't tilt, or it's not bright enough. So they make it brighter, and tiltable. But now, people want them to take it off completely?

Eventually, the only way to make people happy is to sell cameras in the way Apple sell their laptops. You choose from a selection of sensors, mounts, body shapes, screen sizes, media types, audio inputs, battery types etc. Then customer can mix and match to make the camera they want.

Although, even then, people will complain because the HDMI socket can only go on one side of the body, and I'm left handed, so it's a bit annoying.

Hello! What the generation of BVA will be able to record braw? Can I buy the cheapest 1st generation for this? Thanks.

Only the 12g versions can record Braw.

Is anyone here using EF lenses on their FP? I want to get the  MC21, but it just seems so expensive for what it is. And I think Fotodiox stopped making their adapter.

I'd be wet-my-pants-giddy and love to record ProRes RAW straight to a new 2TB XDR iPad Pro (or upcoming 1TB XDR iPhone 13)...heck, someone could market a camera cage with a swivel screen apparatus for mounting the smartphone-or-tablet/recorder for use as a fully-articulated display! (Patent pending, 😉 ...Haw!) Stoopid easy and stoopid smart.

So an external monitor/recorder with usbc instead of HDMI?

For what it's worth, I can record 4k braw to SD cards with a video assist and Sigma fp.
