so the target is also wrong, medium/big companies have the money to rent an Alexa, why they will pick up this new boy in town?, and the rest, SOLO shooters, we have many other best options out there, a waste of time, except for fan boys and STOCK FOOTAGE SHOOTERS!!!
It's okay @hijodeibn. You're in a safe space now. Tell us where BMD hurt you.
Seriously man your beef with a camera company is hilarious.

really?, there are much better tools for the job, C200, C300, etc, nobody needs this except fan boys!!!
Feel free to move along friend. Others can use tools you don't personally like.

Interesting.
But why?
I know you didn't ask me, but I see great use for this cam in stock footage and 4K interviews.

What a mess Blackmagic, waste of time, not even in the next 5 years I will need 12K, I need 6K/4k for cheap for a SOLO shooter, who said the announcement was about the new pocket?, what a piece of shit!!!, not needed except for big productions or fan boys.
Lol then take your money elsewhere friend.

From my understanding 8k and 4k are not cropped but scaled at least from the product page.
So you should get 4k, 8k and 12k all raw and the same field of view that makes it much more practical.
Exactly. It should make the camera relevant for years. 4K in 2020, 8K in 2022, and 12K whenever that comes. But honestly I see huge use for 12K capture of 4K stock footage.

I think this is a brilliant move by Blackmagic. 12K is overkill for now, sure. But, Grant explained how the camera can scale BRAW internally. So it's a great 4K camera in 2020, 8K camera in 2022, and 12K when you want to show off 😉

@MurtlandPhoto this is going to sound slightly disingenuous and I don't mean it to be, but YouTube compression etc and without 'before and after' it's impossible to judge.
Despite this being a visual media, I'm more going on typed, "I tried the 1/8th and it was a bit weak but the 1/4 was perfect" x37 forum members/video channels.
But as has been mentioned above, usually you just have to try these things yourself and see what floats yer boat!
I’m not quite sure what you mean. Compression affects grain and noise structure certainly, but I can easily see the effects of BPM even in 240p footage.

Here's some test footage I shot last year with the Tiffen BPM 1/4. As you can see, the look varies pretty widely depending on whether there's a strong light source in frame or not. Some shots are probably a bit too drastic for corporate work. For my taste, I like to see the obvious effect. Otherwise why bother? 😄

Problem is...sometimes what people want is not what they buy. Go figure.

I have three of these. Fantastic budget solution compared to the Elgato CamLink. Just plug it into your camera and computer. Your Mac will automatically recognize your XC10 as a webcam. https://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-to-USB-2-0-Video-Capture-Card-1080P-HD-Recorder-Game-Video-Live-Streaming/114229848228?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Depends on what you mean by "easier".
For example, back in the pre-DSLR world, if someone simply owned a broadcast camera (such as a new Sony HDW-750) then they could get a fairly steady stream of work due to simply owning that camera. As you'd be a rarity!
These days owning a Panasonic GH5 (or even a Sony FS7) is pretty meaningless, as dozens other people also have the same gear too.
So in one sense of the word, it was easier to "buy your way into the industry" than it is today?Yepp, this. I'd say it's cheaper to buy your way into the industry now, but it was easier years ago. Now, anyone with some savings could buy a decent camera setup, but so can a lot of other people. Wedding photography is the extreme example. During the film days you'd have to own a couple very expensive cameras, loads of film, and lighting to shoot a wedding. The skill was secondary to simply having the capital to buy the equipment. You had to be skilled obviously, but how many skilled photographers couldn't shoot weddings simply because they couldn't pony up the cash upfront to build their kit? Now, you can effectively shoot a wedding with $2000 worth of equipment.
That's my only wedding reference on this thread, I promise!

Remember sensor area is squared so a M43 lens would only cover roughly 6mp on a 24mp sensor.
Gotcha. Well then the S1R is 40+ MP so that's plenty for a center crop.

However nice the cameras may be, I have no idea how Panasonic plans to make a success of this system. Micro 4/3 shooters moving up? Maybe a few, but there’s no interoperability between systems. They could just as easily move to R or Z mount, or even Fuji. That leaves video shooters, but are there enough to make this viable?
This. When rumors first started swirling about the S-line, I thought for sure Panasonic would design the system to make adapting m43 lenses possible. It would make sense. Have a 24mp full frame camera that acts exactly like a 12mp GH5s when you put a m43 lens on it - 10bit 4K with a 2x crop. Perfect way to ease m43 users into the system. But nope.

its not just about the camera. There are other reasons why one might participate.
I could be misremembering since it has been a while since I watched the challenge, but I believe the whole goal of it was to question if the image of the "best" cameras really were the "best". The challenged proved the point that even cheap cameras have reached the point where they are in the same ballpark as the big guys. Thus emphasizing that the other aspects of filmmaking like lighting, audio, blocking, and story are things to focus on. So again, I feel that there's no need for this image-centric type of test.

So many thoughts and memories about that Zacuto shootout. What an amazing time that was. The 5D was certainly the catalyst to the DSLR revolution, but the GH2 was the true champion of it. I think the results directly influenced camera and accessory manufacturers moving forward. I don't think there's a need to ever do another challenge though. By this point, everyone knows that the gap between say a BMPCC4K and an Alexa is narrow enough for 90% of users.

Vimeo's ace up their sleeve is livestreaming. Their Livestream Studio software is legitimately great and has been especially useful during COVID-19.

But, in the end, Sigma 18-35 is one single lens, which can stay on your camera all day. It's also much more easier to get one in a great condition and is significantly cheaper than a set of Leicas.
I keep coming back to this myself. The 18-35mm with a ProMist has nearly as much mojo as a vintage 18mm, 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm set at a far smaller cost.

I always thought I should move up and buy more expensive cameras, but I'm starting to think that for my kind of work having more cameras allows me to significantly change what I can offer my clients.
The camera/M43 lenses are so small, I could pack a 3 camera set up in a backpack. Maybe even a small motorized slider. I could produce much better interview content with multiple angles. For conferences I could do 2 stationary cameras and one manned and produce multi-cam keynote speeches.
That's where I'm at too. It's been more valuable for me to have put my money into multiple cameras than one or two "better" ones.

@hyalinejim Please take comfort in knowing that I do the exact same thing all the time 😂 I'm trying to do better like @fuzzynormal recommends. This has plagued me since the GH4.

This could very well be a case of irrational exuberance. Take a look at the camera. We know that Panasonic required a vent on the back of their S1H to do 6k. Look at most cinema cameras that do 6k or 8k. Fans are usually a must unless you have an exceptional heat sink and w/o an EVF. Add an EVF to a camera and you have lots of heat. Try doing 8k for any extended length and you'll have a shitload more of heat. Canon's 1DX Mark III is capable of up to 2,600 Mbs but has a body the size of a 1969 Buick and no EVF. How is Canon dissipating heat on this smaller camera with 8k capability?
I see forums littered with phrases like "Canon take my money!" Really? Not only have we not seen the full specs. No one has been able to test the camera.
Something seems fishy to me.
All of this. Looking to the S1H as the most comparable camera on the market - I don't see how Canon could possible leapfrog Panasonic in such a dramatic way. My intuition tells me the only way Canon can achieve these specs is to limit recording times, crop, disable AF in certain modes, or all of the above. Still, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Personally I love using m43 cams with native lenses for interviews. You can easily light for f/2.8, but with the benefit of f/5.6 DoF. It means I can use smaller, less powerful lights which helps keep the setup small.

The S1 to the GH4 is too big of a jump IMO. Panasonic has tweaked their color science substantially since 2014 and pairing the two would be more of a headache than it's worth. The G85 will get you much closer, but really I would try to spring for a GH5. The 10 bit will be a huge help for you. If that's too much, then consider a used original Blackmagic Pocket. HD only, but it's great HD.
Remember, when matching cameras you often have to match the best image to the inferior one. Don't cripple your S1 - get something that can almost replicate it. Just my $0.02.
