Have been looking a bit closer at some of these reviewers using the C300ii, rx100, and a6500. They go oof a lot or pulse horribly so I'm not convinced "world class" has all the boxes ticked.

People had way to high expectations about this camera, not only because the hype Panasonic started but because of rumor sites and potential buyers upping the hype.
10bit 422 is great but it's not some magical feature that will make everything you shoot look like Alexa footage. Messing up on 10 bit will hurt almost as much as messing up on 8 bit. Future 400 Mbps update not considered.
Judging the camera for what it is, my first impressions are great. Im sure it's going to be a real workhorse just like the GH4 is.

Edit. Forgot to mention something about the autofocus. Personally I don't use it but sure, it would have been nice to have. If you need world class leading autofocus during video recording then look elsewhere. Panasonic might fix it with firmware, or not.

I'm sorry to hear that, Jon! No 4G cell phone carriers there?
    All the best,
    E :-)

    Here's the thread on topic:
From the GH5 AF complex system, I wouldn't find that even a trouble. There are workarounds, as possible to check it out. Just find them out.

Ken Ross reacted to Orangenz in GH5 e-shutter is slower...
Video AF yawn speed during 6k photo I think. That's why you should use mech shutter continuous mode afc for that task.
    h265 intra it's fine.
The shutter is really quite quiet. I'm very impressed with it. Not sure what you're trying to say. Do you take a lot of photos of lions that are upset by the GH5 shutter sound while they are doing star jumps? Most wild animal safaris I've seen have swarms of people with very loud shutters. I'm just trying to figure out where are all these really fast motion scenes that are really quiet. Which is to say, there will be a camera on the market somewhere that does exactly what you're after there. An 18MP global e-shutter type of thing but with fast AF. Ok maybe not but what about the Sony A9?

This is a situation where you should actually trust the specs. There is literally no reason that M43 should look more 'robotic' than say, super 16mm, in terms of the look of transitions between in and out of focus. It's total nonsense.
Maybe you're looking at images produced with lenses that don't have much of 'pop' in terms of subject separation. That would make sense and could be attributed to optical design. But there's a solution - pick a different lens.

    Another battery test:
    Panasonic 2:18
    Kastar 0:58, 1:16
    Power2000 1:24
    BatteryPack 1:34
    Wasabi - 2:19
So it looks like Wasabi has won the after-market battery competition. I also note that when going onto the charger it starts from 20% not 40% like the others. So it gets flatter while maintaining an operating voltage to the camera.

I'm not sure why some were expecting to see an A7Siii or equivalent at NAB. Traditionally, NAB has always been more geared to broadcasters and not where you expect to see premieres of enthusiast/prosumer/consumer equipment.
I'm sure Sony is still working on their overheating issues and until they come up with a solution, it will be tough for them to compete with the GH5 on video features. They certainly can't introduce usable 4K60p until the overheating of 4K30p is solved.

4k 60p and better battery life are a must.
Better ergonomics and 10-bit codec would be nice.
Built-in ND filter would be a dream.

Yes, that too, but I think it goes beyond that. In an effort to give it a 'filmic' look, I thing they deliberately tried to soften it and raise black levels to the point that it just looks muddy.
I think that's more the fault of the grading than the camera. It seems that some just love to grade the life out of any camera. I know this s a highly subjective area, but that's just how it strikes me.

The colors out of this camera are lovely...and if you were going to use this for narrative, i.e. 2 to 3  people minimum to operate it, I think one would really see it shine...what's missing for me in a lot of these samples (in fact I would go as far as to say most) is critical focus...perhaps just an issue of web footage, but I don't see this when looking at Alexa or Varicam or Red on the web...the footage we're seeing could benefit greatly from a good focus puller...as you would have for narrative...a measuring tape....focus marks for actors to hit and a FP concentrating on nothing but maintaining focus...while the operator is concentrating on nothing but framing the shot....the color and various looks achievable in 10 bit grading is already obvious...
The benefits and beauty of moving a camera properly!
I think it's more out of focus than anything!

And that's something that can't be overlooked, the stabilization. The IBIS in the Sonys, including the A6500 & A7Rii, IMO, just suck. I see the same jitter than I had with OIS lenses and no IBIS on my A6300. The GH5 is just a dream for hand-holding.

We've conjectured that some of the significant AF differences we've seen in different GH5 videos is the result of differences in the lenses themselves. I've always gotten great AF results from my 14-140 and although my 15mm 1.7 is good, it's not as quick as the 14-140.

Ken Ross reacted to Rinad Amir in Firmware Ver.1.1 set to expand 4K camera's 4:2:2 10-bit GH5
Hey Everyone Upcoming update for GH5 is on Monday
Panasonic has announced the first of its planned firmware updates (Ver.1.1) for the LUMIX GH5, which will expand the camera’s 4:2:2 10-bit video recording mode.
The new firmware enables 4:2:2 10-bit video recording in either FHD [MP4(LPCM)] / [MOV] or Anamorphic (4:3) modes, in addition to the existing 4K video recording mode. The GH5 delivers Cinema 4K (4096×2160) video at 60p and 4K at 50p, using the entire width of the sensor when shooting 4K and then downsampling the footage in-camera.
    What the firmware will offer
In 4:2:2 10-bit 1920×1080 Full HD [MP4(LPCM)] / [MOV] mode the firmware will offer 50p and 25p (PAL), 59.94p, 29.97p and 23.98p (NTSC) and 24p (Cinema) – all at 100Mbps with Long GOP image compression. Whilst in 4:2:2 10-bit Anamorphic mode (3328×2496) it will offer 25p (PAL), 29.97p and 23.98p (NTSC) and 24p (Cinema) at 150Mbps with Long GOP image compression.
    Bug fixes
The firmware version 1.1 for the GH5 also includes following bug fixes:
    • A problem in which the exposure adjustment did not operate properly during live view standby under specific condition in using (Variable Frame Rate).
    • A problem in which afterimages appeared when recording video under high ISO sensitivity settings in using (V-LogL).
    Release date
The new GH5 firmware (Ver.1.1) is scheduled to be released on Monday 24 April 2017 – you will be able to find out all about it on that day by visiting the LUMIX Customer Support website by clicking http://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/

The thing not really mentioned often enough in this thread, as that is really what it's all about, in this or any camera, is the image quality...I have to say I was expecting a good image...Panasonic completely surpassed my expectations with the image out of the GH5!
