Adam Kuźniar got a reaction from Adept in Panasonic GH5 - all is revealed!
A couple of quick screengrabs from a recent Jazz concert I shot. I must say I was super impressed with the GH5 on this one - not only it recorded for 1h30m straight with no issues but it did so on one single battery! Meanwhile Sony shooters that were there kept saying on the voice comms "I need to switch the battery" over and over again ?

Adam Kuźniar reacted to Video Hummus in RED claim victory in Apple RAW patent battle
    Of course! Sounds ridiculous right?
Just swap “car” with “camera” and “engine cylinders” with “resolution” and “speed” with “frames per second” and you have essential what the RED patent is.
    Bayer sensors existed before RED
    Bayer data existed before RED.
The jpeg2000 Compression existed before RED.
Hence adding “two more cylinders” is the same as RED adding “Bayer compression” to existing technology and then essentially getting a patent for “cars with certain sized engine going faster than X speed (a camera recording at 4K Bayer resolution at least 23 fps).
All that shit existed before except the jpeg2000 compression to Bayer data. I have no problem with that part.
Putting OBVIOUS things like FPS and resolution gives RED a blanket patent on compressed BAYER data 4K and up at 23 FPS and up. Which is absolutely ridiculous.
If the patent instead said 4K and up at least 23FPS using X unique algorithm implementation then that’s fine.
REDs patent is a blanket patent on ANY implementation. What if I have a better algorithm that improves on jpeg2000. Nope, RED by defaults owns that space from 4K to infinity and 23 FPS to infinity. It’s complete bullshit.
Ans what about stills cameras? That have been shooting compressed RAW for years before RED was even a twinkle in Jim’s eye?
Suddenly they can’t shoot more than 23 FPS because they will be infringing on REDs patent NOT because they are using the same compression technology as RED but simply because they hit a arbitrary number that RED claims an patent over. It’s moronic.

Adam Kuźniar reacted to BTM_Pix in Report AI spambots here
OK, here is what they're up to.
I thought it was weird that the plausible posts didn't have any links in them and initially thought that we had managed to attract the most incompetent spammers on the internet (aside from the Conservative party's latest efforts obviously).
What they do is get a second spammer (or themselves) to quote the first post and tag the link for whatever shite it is they're pushing on to the end of the quote.
At first it looks like its a legitimate reply but the posts will have positive replies such as "Issue got solved" or "Agreed!" because it entices someone to click the link to find out what the solution was etc. which is what their game is.
Here are two recent examples from the "Century Optics" and "50mm" thread.
The posts quoted did not have the links in originally.

They are obviously wise to the fact that the first posts will get moderated so anything with a dodgy link in will be deleted so thats why they don't put it in that but use the reply system to insert them.
I would guess that there are a lot of "clean" accounts set up to do the first post and then they'll just use multiple other accounts to add the links in to replies.
This makes it look like the one replying is the spammer when in actual fact they both are.
Can I make a request to not ban the one who posts the pieces about chains though as I find it offers a good perspective for when my own life is at its most tedious and dull to think "yeah but at least I don't have to write about chains. Or worse still, be so far down the spamming ladder that I get given that as source material in bot farm when all my other bot mates are out there preaching about penis enlargement"

    Thank you.
    From that other thread:
I'm about to get my first MFT camera so I'm excited to do my own tests vs FF, but it really seems to me that mathematically there's no difference between formats, it just comes down to real-world imperfections and real world availability of manufacturing.
For instance, one thing that I think stands out with larger formats is shallow depth of field at wider fields of view: 24mm 1.4s are commonly made for FF cameras, whereas a 12mm f/0.7 doesn't exist to my knowledge so you can't match that look on MFT. It's technically possible it just doesn't get made because the cost wouldn't be worth it.(.64 speed boosting a Sigma 20mm 1.4 would be pretty close though)

Read through a few pages and my brain is already melted.  Not from the technical aspects involved, but in trying to understand what people are actually saying.
I think that part of the problem is that so many variables are at play that a proper conversation can't be had because people aren't communicating the full picture and are changing multiple variables at the same time.  Even the animated gif in the thumbnail thread (showing the Canon camera and shallow DoF) clearly shows that the camera position has changed, which is hopeless - you can't compare the size of the bokeh if you're moving the camera around.
All the talk of 'getting closer' in these articles and comments indicates that at least some people are talking about the difference between close/wide and far/tele shots, which is a completely different topic to standing in the same place and comparing setups that have the same FOV and DoF:
a small sensor camera/lens setup a large sensor camera/lens setup, and a small sensor camera / large sensor lens with speed booster IIRC I have 55mm, 40mm lenses at home, plus a 0.71x SB for the 55mm, so should be able to do a comparison (55mm x 0.71 = 39mm).
I'll see if my brain recovers enough throughout the day to be able to do a test when I get home.

IMO it comes from going 60->24 which isn't a simple .5 speed conversion. but rather .4 which means some frames are being played slower and some longer (even if just for a fraction). I might be completely wrong though so you better test it out by going 60->30 or 48->24

I sometimes shoot myself at f/1.2 and the app with peaking and focus zoom is enough to get it in focus.

Sliders are not run and gun. Thats my issue with them. Gimbals are on the other hand. You can still mimic a slider with gimbal with some skill and moderate slowmo and maybe tilt axis post stabilization.

Adam Kuźniar reacted to BTM_Pix in High frame rate video - audio possibilities?
Its doable with something custom written.
You record the incoming audio to files in increasing time chunks depending on the slow down percentage that you want, to take into account the time it will take to play them back.
So for example, lets take a half speed playback scenario.
The incoming audio (FILE 1) would be written to a file after the first 0.5 seconds and the playback of that file would begin immediately when its finished writing but at half speed.
Simultaneously, the still incoming audio would immediately start writing to a new file (FILE 2) which would need to be of sufficient length to cover the length of time the playback will take to complete the first file before it is ready to play this new file.
As our first file is 0.5 seconds, it will take 1 second to playback at half speed so our new file (FILE 2) will need to be 1 second long and this will immediately begin playing upon completion whereupon we begin recording another new file.
This file (FILE 2) will take 2 seconds to play back at half speed so our next file (FILE 3) will need to be 2 seconds long.
As this will take 4 seconds to complete playback at half speed our next file (FILE 4) will need to be 8 seconds long.
And so on and so on.
I've done you a spreadsheet illustration

Depending on what you are going to run it on and how long the piece is you could do this in memory of course with buffers instead of writing to files.
The audio of course will be playing back at half pitch as well as half speed but there are enough affordable hardware solutions out there nowadays to take care of that.
