Shot this promo back in August on a 5D3.

    Using a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8

It was professionally graded in Baselight Studio, the colorist was very surprised when he found out what it was shot on.

Let me know what you think or shoot a question!

Thank you so much for sharing this @hyalinejim! I have been using your Ektar TWISTED lut and absolutely love it! I have no doubt this is gonna be extremely useful for all of us.

Danne (Magic Lantern superstar) and I have been working on a log DCP profile for Magic Lantern. At the moment, it's just for the 5D3. But if feedback is positive we will try to roll it out for all Magic Lantern cams.
This profile is for use with an Adobe Camera Raw to After Effects workflow (although it may have other applications). Although other workflows may be faster - Resolve, for example - many people feel that the debayering, colour reproduction and noise control offered by ACR is unparalleled.
The philosophy with this profile is to get the raw linear data into a log curve, so that blacks and whites aren't clipped and there is a relatively equal relationship between stops. Interestingly enough with this profile, and maybe it is unique in this regard, it has very accurate colour. Unlike Sony's S-Log or Panasonic's V-Log it's not necessary to correct for unusual colour reproduction. Just set a good white balance in ACR, apply a curve and colours are (almost!) bang on target.
If you've never used a DCP profile before read more about it here:
    https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=20710.msg191757;topicseen#msg191757
Here is a ZIP file with the DCP and with two kinds of curves, one clean one with a "filmic" colour cast. You get both as a LUT and as a curve file for your convenience.

Ain’t that the truth. I am in no place to tell someone how to spend their money, god knows I’ve spent a small fortune of my own but as a hobbyist that is also interested in the conveniences of cinema cameras, I cannot rightly say that I could ever justify a $4500 price tag just to have 4K, when the majority of viewers will never see the benefits. In my opinion, if Arri hasn’t felt the need to release a 4K camera, then I don’t see why anybody on here really NEEDS one.
So with that being said I feel the OP should get whatever he wants for whatever reason he wants, but I would still suggest either an F3, a C100ii or C300 or I guess an LS300 or FS5 if he really wants a 4K camera. And if he wants one on the cheap then get an LS300 but he should be fully aware of the build quality before just hitting buy it now.

F3 with the BMVA. In a heartbeat.
Form factor takes some getting used to, but I actually find it very easy to operate on a tripod or with a back-weighted shoulder rig. You just have to set up your custom buttons properly. There are hard buttons/switches for almost everything, standard cinema I/O, and excellent reliability. Low light, DR, colors, roll off, and malleability in post (with an external recorder) are all outstanding.

It has a ton of advantages over a comparable DSLR, too, like outstanding battery life, XLRs, internal NDs, interchangeable mounts, SDI out (hard to go back once you have it), more mounting points without the need for a cage, top handle for low angle shots, no record limit, and the most accurate peaking function I've ever used.

My current rig is very simple: the F3 body with a simple rail/riser system and a Tilta follow focus, a camcorder battery with a d-tap output, and a Blackmagic Video Assist mounted to the top handle with power running to it from the d-tap. That means no multiple batteries to keep track of and a streamlined rig.

As a 1080p cinema camera, it's the absolute best available for the money.

Even as a C300 fanboy (I love the ease of use), I agree that the F3 is a better cinema camera with a technically stronger image. The image isn't as sharp but it's more than sharp enough and otherwise it's better in every way except codec... and color is subjective. It has slightly better DR and 10 bit 444 out vs 422 8 bit out (though that's all Canon Log really needs). Same pixel pitch etc. as the Alexa I believe (very similar at least).
But rent it and try it out if you can. Coming from a dSLR, I couldn't deal with F3 ergonomics, especially when the C300 had 90% of the image in a much smaller form factor. I also liked the Canon colors a bit more, but the F3 has good color, not like later Sony cameras which are a very mixed bag.
If you're considering both, try both, but I'm a Canon fanboy who did not like the F5 but I still think the F3 is a steal. Plus, 60p! I also like the F35 but it's more trouble.

HD? PL? S35? 60p? NDs? DR? Colors? Lowlight?

Sounds like you just described the Sony PMW-F3! ;-)
    Smart!!
    No contest.
    F3 wins.

Yeah, JVC LS300 or secondhand Sony FS700 are probably the only other S35 cinema cameras with NDs I'd consider on an ultra low budget, other than the Sony F3.
Rather go with a BMD Pocket/Micro than the BMCC

SigurdW reacted to markr041 in Shooting 4K 60P RAW and 4K 120P Run and Gun: FS700R + Shogun Inferno
Run and gun means one can carry around a camera with no rigs, poles, tripods or other aids shooting handheld, for hours. The FS700R needs the 7" Shogun Inferno attached by wire to shoot 4K60P and 120P RAW. Can this combo be used for run and gun?
Well, if you think of the Shogun not as a monitor but as just an external recorder, then you can just put it in a shoulder bag. Convergent Design makes a very thin and flexible (you can tie it in knots they show) 3' SDI cable. So carry the recorder in a shoulder bag and shoot with the camera. The cable is so thin and flexible and long, it is as if it is not there (SDI cables also have more secure attachments than HDMI cables; no danger of the wire coming loose).
To test this, I went to shoot the local chickens, in slo mo 4K. Cinematic chickens. Inferno in the shoulder bag, me, the camera and Zeiss 2470 FE OSS lens.
    From ProRes 422 HQ Slog2.

I think on paper the F3 beats it in about every way. Canon just might have the slightest edge in low light, not 100% certain on this.

It all comes down to your preferences in image and Canon fanboys might tell you "Sony's color science is crap", but have in mind:

    You can do a whole lot more to a 10-bit 4:4:4 image than Canon's 8-bit 4:2:2.

BTW This is coming from a Canon fanboy, that shoots 14-bit raw  Just to cause some confusion.

Looking a bit shaky - but this is a nice lens at 100FPS the Pentax K 28mm 3.5. The shimmering warm flares at the start are nice - obviously some reflection off the water.

    Hullo everyone,
I just wanna let people here know about a new MLV processing/correcting/grading app I'm developing - It's called 'MLV App'... unless I come bother to come up with a better name.
    Here's how it looks:

The goal is to make a cross platform app for converting MLV files to ProRes/h.264/whatever you want.
This is a plug, but I'm not making any money, as it is an opensource, free software, and free app... I'm just announcing it so maybe I can get more people to contribute - both testing/feedback and help with code is valuable.
Here's the Magic Lantern forum discussion: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=20025.0
Here's the source code on GitHub: https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App
    Downloads are here: https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App/releases
Theres a 'Cocoa' version and a 'Qt' version, the Cocoa version has a GUI built natively for macOS, and the Qt version works on Mac and Windows, and soon Linux (some errors compiling right now) - both versions have the same exact MLV processing and reading code, just the user interface is built differently.
Here's a demo video that shows how the processed images look:
(Note: the video was created with an older version of the app)
It's a pretty basic app right now, but I think the processed images look nice. It supports 10/12/14 bit RAW video, however I have not yet implemented compressed RAW, that's coming as soon as possible.
(I'm the one who made the RAW calculator at the start of this topic btw)
    Enjoy

Thanks for the info @SigurdW - It might be worth me having a look at the pancake lens - I dont think it would be any harder to focus with than the Contax Zeiss 45. - as that focus ring is tiny. I'm sorting out all these lens tests - so I know whats good for stills (my career) - Sharp and fast and then for motion which can afford to be more poetic and with a little more give in terms of requirements. I did notice that in some ways the Nikon 100 was sharp etc but it still needed due care and consideration as at 2.8 and inifinity on the anamorphot - it still wasnt infinity on the taking lens - which caused some soft issues........ flares were good - although I was too late for them at the sunrise. And yes Sigur Ros...... i think the guy went on to do Rice Boy........ both lovely music !

@funkyou86 I use the Rectilux HCDNA, can not recommend it enough! It has lived on my Bolex since day 1 and will probably never come of. Real good engineering, feels like and behaves like a tank - not a fragile peace of glass

A little film from my latest trip to the home-place of my girlfriend, the Lofoten Islands.

Brought along the 5D Mk3, Bolex 16/32 + HCDNA and two new little gems:

The Helios 44-2 Silver, which I have to say I did not become too fond of coming from the 44M. Might have just been an unfortunate sample, but way softer than my 44M as well as a blue-ish tint.

And the Jupiter 9 Silver, which I absolutely loved. Nicest colours of my assortment, not to mention impressive sharpness wide open (read a lot of hate on that part on-line).

Shot in 1748x 618 (or something) stretched to 2160x778

Very interesting read and great footage and images. However I have to admit that some videos are so sharp... they almost hurt my eyes. I wish I had a Moller 16. But I think there is a little advantage of the small brother: With my Moller 8/19 I can focus taking lens and anamorphic at the same time (not with Nikon glass of course). And that is a wonderful light setup. Moller-Wedel has a very long tradition in optics and microscopes. I am often nearby their factory when I am around with my racing bike

I can answer... but it's actually the same as asking 'how old are you' ...you mostly do not ask that ;-) But, here we go; my setup, the Bolex 16/32 1.100 dollar (yes it can!), the HCDNA, 900 dollar, rig 250 dollar, Ultron 40mm 350 dollar. I had a Iscorama 36 and sold him. This setup is huge and weight a lot more, but the quality IMHO is much better than the Iscorama. And at least, I don't sell my Bolex ever again.
