They'd be insane not to do a pocket ii. Hands down, the Pocket was their most successful camera, but it is starting to get a little long in the tooth. At the very least the form factor deserves 60p, a better LCD and better battery. If they can work out how to include the 2.5k and the global shutter, they'll have another hugely successful camera... Especially if they can keep the cost at or below $1299.

I think it would be a genius move for Canon to include raw video in the M5. If they're truly having technical difficulties implementing 4K into their smaller cameras due to heat dissipation, the inclusion of 1080p Raw would put them in a different category and nobody would care if it had 4K. But they would never do it because they don't think outside the box, they are run by bean counters (as all the major camera manufacturers are)
But with their "history with ML" you'd think it would be pretty simple for them to implement such a feature.

Haha yeah, looking to pick up a pocket for about 600.. I had a 50d for a while, but sold it on before I could fully check out the RAW - only had a slow cf card. I was also considering a 5D mk2, just love tiny cameras too much though! What would be really cool is a pocket with stabilization and dpaf - an eos m5 could almost be this camera.. some amazing cameras out there for under 1k

Are you gonna go with the Pocket? If I ever find a new one for $600 or less, I will probably buy one. The Raw image is just undeniable. For now I'm enjoying 50D Raw with Canon colors.

An APS-C sized pocket would be amazing. Smallish form factor with tiltable screen, better battery and speed-boostable to FF... just imagine  .

I'd be happy with s16 and mft for 1k, and use the metabones speedbooster - after working with some BM 2.5k footage, I've decided to get a Blackmagic and forget about the Panasonics and Canons etc! An EF mount would be a great option though, for sure..

RED do face online attacks when something goes wrong.
There are plenty of professionals who use forums.
Let's try to see the positive side of this rather public relationship Blackmagic and RED have with their customers. We can all share knowledge and sort out a huge number of support issues online, rather than having to go to a service centre one by one like sheep.
I am sure whatever issues Blackmagic have with the URSA Mini 4.6k, they will sort them out, as RED would do, or Arri, or any of the others.
This is a very grey area and to pretend any of us know all the answers is pretty dangerous.
There are just so many aspects to this. By saying 'designing' you could mean numerous things - inventing new technology, planning out pixel architecture in a design room, or simply asking for a certain spec and having a custom order... it's a pretty broad spectrum. The manufacturing of the sensor is an ocean of different aspects linked in with the design as well, if you're going to invent a new kind of pixel architecture or readout mechanism for example you need to have the tools to manufacture it.
Arguing about where on this spectrum of engineering a custom-made sensor falls is a bit pointless because...
The image is about the whole package - Blackmagic's colour science and sensor calibration is superb. Along with Canon and Olympus I think Blackmagic's colour is one of the most flattering of the talent in front of the camera.
Until we see the exact same 4.6K sensor in any other camera, the URSA Mini has exclusivity...
I'd question why the whole topic even matters, since as I just said, it's the whole package that makes an image unique.
The whole workflow as well - this is an important part and the sensor is just one link in the chain between the lens and the final image.
    Respectfully disagree.
RED don't have an entire sensor design and manufacturing workforce in-house.
RED call on similar outside talent to develop a CMOS design, specced out for a particular camera. Probably TowerJazz.
Leica do it as well - CMOSIS and Panasonic both design and manufacture sensors for them. Where's the shame in this?
Fairchild are just another sensor design company to partner with and a very good one at that.
Blackmagic and Fairchild = "lack of expertise" is a really below the belt comment and just not true.
In fact, that is just your assumption. You don't actually know.

It could not have XC10 specs without the fan. If it had 4K it would have been in mjpeg. Which would have been fine by me. But don't forget, they're supposed to be releasing a FF mirrorless by year's end. If that doesn't have mjpeg 4K, then I would be surprised. As is, it's a little monster of a 1080p cam.
Haha, I was so happy with the color I was getting from my original M and then I fell under the spell of that sultry, slutty 4K and I was chasing bad color, especially since I'm a horrible colorist, for the past year. I pick up the XC10 and 50D Raw and I remember the freedom of not having to tweak every increment from a picture profile trying to get my reds desaturated and my oranges not to pollute every pore. 60p with Canon color or overheated 4K with green skin tones... I'll take 1080p 60p please.
I wonder how well the DPAF works with their ef to ef-m adapter?

It's not on your list. And it's not one I would have thought of using in the past for monitoring. That is, until I used them.
    Which?
    The Bose QC35
These headphones are noise cancelling. In the past I used Sony's and Sennheisers to monitor. However, in noisy environments I would often times have a hard time discerning if the noise I was hearing was getting in from the ear-cups or if it was in fact being picked up by the microphone. But with the QC35s this is no longer an issue. Because the only thing I hear is what the microphone hears. No single audio purchase improved the quality of my captured audio more than the QC35s. Now I know exactly what is being picked up by the microphone. There is no more guess work.

I actually think that eos-m5 may be their flagship mirrorless... Or should I say, their 5D of their mirrorless line. They introduced the base consumer model, the m10 last year, so it seems like maybe they are delineating their mirrorless models?

Being able to script / storyboard a concept - then shoot using beautiful lensing and sound capture - and follow up with editing where you move the viewer through the story in the 4 dimensions of time and space NEVER gets old.  Getting paid to do what you love totally rocks. Its money AND love as far as i am concerned.

The trick is to have control over the whole process - If you just shoot and hand off your shots then it can be hard to maintain the love. I know a lot of jaded "camera operators" who clock on and clock off with little job ownership.

I started in photography prior to video. I too wouldn't take my GH4 on a shoot for stills. I'd take a Nikon or Canon.

When I bought my 5D mkii six years ago, it was for video. But at some point I realized, "you know, this is a pretty good still camera, too." [doh]. So I started shooting a lot more stills. I had always shot stills as a hobby, or "to train my eye" for film shoots, or on location scouts. Suddenly stills became much more present. I've now been hired many times as a still photographer in addition to continuing work in film. The bulk of my work, effort, and marketing goes into the film side of things, but I really enjoy shooting still now, too. Here are some shots from a recent trip to Morocco. Shooting stills has also made me a more confident cinematographer, too.

But still...no other camera at b and h was broken and the two sales reps both spoke poorly of the camera
What does that say about a companies flagship new camera?

About pontificating about bmd willingly released cameras with magneta issue because they were pressured too...of course this is not presented as fact. No one here besides maybe John would have even that kind of knowledge.

I wish they'd just focus on developing a killer new model of the BMPCC. To me, it looks like they've wasted a ton of time and money developing all these niche cameras when the one camera they have that sold reasonably well and has broad appeal is in dire need of a hardware update. One or two cameras for BM is more than enough. Keep it simple. They have spent a fortune developing all these other cameras.  Just focus on improving the 4.6 and the BMPCC.

No way. I've been using the 4.6k with no problems for months. The new 4.0 firmware puts it over the top. 4.6k, 4K DCI, & 3K anamorphic ProRes. Custom LUT display. 2x desqueeze on the 5" LCD. I've finally found a camera that is perfect for what i do.

The digital revolution is an incredible thing. The first globally cultural phenomenon.
Bigger businesses can try as hard as they can to monetize it, but that sort of process demands way too "lowest-common-denominator" sort of stuff to be truly compelling.
Normally, it's dry and boring "content" not actual writing.  Lousy Corporate speak and intellectual junk food.
Those of us that are more curious than normal folks will always require niche corners, like eoshd, to keep it real.
There's plenty of room inside the Internet. Writing created by people that really do care about what they're saying will always have a place.
Whe I first came here I spouted off my typical egalitarian camera rants and was quickly chastised by the head-honcho because of it, which I really appreciated.
Finally, I thought, a place where someone has an opinion they really care about!  Its not some unpaid intern just regurgitating a PR sheet from corporate marketing.
I don't know, maybe these sorts of corners will have a harder time existing as newer generations get more sophistically exploited by content-providers. Perhaps not.
After all, Humans have always tended to have alternatives to the mainstream. From philosophy to books to camera blogs.

I had a Videomic Pro that had its battery door broken off and they replaced it for free!
In terms of the product quality, I find their gear is generally punching above its weight in terms of price-to-performance ratio. Are there better mics out there? Yes. Are there better mics for the price?
That's a harder one to answer, and you'll be hard pressed to find better value especially when you consider their customer service.
