I'm still hoping on seeing a proper 1DC mkii. Are there any rumors of this happening? Have we categorically heard from Canon that the 1DX II is the upgrade to the 1DC? Canon has new Cinema upgrades that would be nice to add to a 1DC II like Canon Log 3 gamma and Wide DR picture profile. I use old manual lenses on my 1DC so autofocus isn't a huge deal to me but is a nice thought for VLogs and steadicam/ gimbal use.

Nice work Dave. Whats interesting is Canon already has designed the perfect 1DC mkii sensor, the 12mp full frame from the orginal 5D.  I'd love that in a 1DCII, full frame 4k with everything else you mentioned.

Sorry for the miscommunication. I meant slow to work with as in the camera itself moves slow. It boots up slow. Using the odyssey recorder is clunky. It feels like an old camera for sure. The sensitivity of the camera is really good!

How's the 4K compared to 1DC? I'm sure the Prores codec is much nicer to grade.

Since there's an example of the 1DX II skin tone in a wedding video, here's one with no Canon cameras. Just Sony and Panasonic.

really well done and probably as good of skin tones as I've seen on sony.

It's just a very different look, not even something that I can put my finger on. When I watch a wedding shot on Canon I feel like I'm watching wedding, on Sony, a wedding video

And really hard to focus ;-)

it's easier for me because it's very clear what is and isn't in focus!

Because I have an aps-c and I asked the differences if I were to move up to FF.

From what I understand, once you go larger than FF format, physics starts to work against you with aperture of most lenses.

  5. FF can look like APS-C if stopped down. Crop sensors can look like full frame if the DOF+FOV equivalent is possible. Its all about the DOF at a given effective focal length. FF starts to become impossible to emulate with combinations like a 24mm at f/2 or 35mm at f/2 or 2.8 on FF. Those are magic.

  6. there is a youtube review somewhere that shows the 1080p vs the mkiii. the mk IV is a good deal sharper than the mkiii. Not Sony sharp by any means, but noticeable. I'm curious how it compares to the 1DXII 1080p FF.

found it, about 4:50 on this video - Its a bit sharper.

  7. Why dont you "punch in" as you're shooting and switch to a 100mm macro lens. Not being a smart ass, but you could save some change and get a 1DC and shoot the 60FPS 1080p, or the standard 4k. honestly 4K up close on a female face is going to show a ton of detail in an unflattering way. A cinematographer would be softening the image with mist filters.

  8. I've been itching for this cam as well! Slight image trade offs from the 1DC for huge usability gains like autofocus and sharp slo mo.

One thing that I have yet to hear mentioned on here is how beautiful the underexposure of the 1dc or 1dx mjpeg can be. It just has a nice shadow rolloff. I shot at the Georgia aquarium in 4k last week on a family trip and noticed how clean the images came out. very cinematic feeling, never got this with the 6d or 5d without overexposing and then trying to bring it back down.

If the manfrotto Sympla thumb controller can move the auto focus box around that'd be a great setup for single user gimbal work.

    1DC S35 mode uses a cropped area of 3216 x 1809 photosites on the sensor. It does a 2 x 2 binning to get a 1608 x 904 RAW bayer and upscales to 1080p.

Since the sensor OLPF was not optmised for this binning mode, you get slightly more aliasing shooting S35, which also makes it perceptually sharper.

    mind = blown.

  10. Is the s35 on the 1dc a 4K oversampling like the c100 is? The c100/300 seems to have that "oversampled" look to it, which I like, but I'm not sure my 1DC in s35 has quite that amount detail.  Can anyone point to a good comparison of the s35 of the 1DC vs the c100.

I wish. I just thought a kiwi bird looked cool when I chose a logo for myself. Probably should have thought about that. I'm an LA boy living in Nashville TN.

I'm in Birmingham, AL Dave. PM me sometime if you're in the area or need another 1dc!

I'm planning on getting the 501 with the new small HD hotshoe adapter. Such a nice tiny little setup

We have a sound recordist so audio isn't a problem. I want the better image to be A. And I'm ready for the struggle of it.

The glare is the only downside to the 501. For me, the hood doesn't really help. I did buy an iPhone 6 Plus matte screen protector that can be cut to fit. It makes the 501 much more usable outdoors.
