Its not clipping. In fact its perfect. With any digital image you really need to expose as hot as possible without clipping. When you pull the exposure back down to normal...all the noise that would have been there gets crushed and goes away. You did everything right. Here is a video of what I would do. Even have a way to give it a "look" at the end if you want. You really nailed the shot actually. Looks great.

I'm so thankful to this forum. Its a place where I can get honest amazing feedback and a place that is open to thinking outside the box.
I am DP for a pretty high profile web doc in Mexico and we are going to some exotic locations next week. I asked your opinion on what to get and I went with my gut. I got a used 1D C and I am so stoked to finally own a camera again instead of renting stuff. My B Cam operator will be rocking the C100 and we will have an a7S II that is there specifically for slow motion and thats it. A-Cam 1D C. We have a sound guy who will be recording and booming everything separate so the crappy internal audio isn't a problem with the A Cam. Just more syncing in post for the editor
Im bringing my CONTAX Zeiss primes and will be prioritizing those over the typical Canon zooms. I get so bored with docs I see on Netflix and on VICE and I realized its cause everyone uses the same boring Canon Zooms. There is nothing sexy about the 24-105. Of course its practical and if we are in a run n gun situation, I will pop it on. But lens character is just as important as the Camera! I am so excited to pair my vintage CONTAX Zeiss lenses with the 1D C sensor. I have a feeling its going to be gold.
I shot a doc in Nicaragua two months ago with the GH4 and it was nice and I was surprised by the IQ of it...but the 1D C has some sort of mojo about it that I can't explain. I shot with one in Haiti about 3 years ago when it was way out of my price range and loved it. Im stoked to be able to use it and to own one.
As soon as I get home I will be directing a medium sized budget music video that has VFX and very fun lighting. I will use the 1D C for that too. So in the next month, I will have two very different experiences with it. Im pumped.
Sure it will take up a ton of storage on this trip...but I can buy 2 5TB drives on amazon for like $300.
Like Andrew said on this forum a while back when he got his 1D C:

"Yes I may still regret it but you only live once.
I believe at it's current used price it's a bargain, bonafide Hollywood cam."
Honestly...seeing that these two hollywood films were shot on it...sold me on the camera. Im looking forward to getting it and doing some tests soon! I have it overnighted so I should receive it Friday. Cheers!

Since it is with a high profile musician, why not rent the C300 ii and buy the C100 mkii for B-roll or in case something happens with the C300. But I don't know if the rental cost and purchase cost exceeds your budget? If you can swing it, the C100 mkii, at the current price is just a money maker... Or maybe even an XC10. You can do a lot with that little guy.

Sounds like renting's probably your best option, and will likely serve you better anyway. You'll be able to customise the things you need a lot better and easier than having to cobble together parts on a limited budget (and can potentially shoot on a better camera/lens combo to boot!)

It really depends on your needs. A documentary could mean dodging bullets or establishing shots and interviews. A music video and narrative, the same.
The content should dictate what kind of camera you use.
Then consider the production costs and needs. Your crew, lighting and sound. Different cameras have different needs.
Lastly, post production costs and delivery matters.
All of these should factor into your decision.
But honestly, your demands are broad enough to NOT buy. There is no magical camera that rules them all. All of them involve compromises.
It's not a sexy answer, but put your money into talent and crew. A lot of camera ops and sound mixers/boom ops are also available as wet hires. They bring their own gear, and they're skilled at using them. Many of them market themselves with their gear, so you can also vet them based on what cameras they have and use.
It'll be a lot better than throwing a new camera at some guy and telling him to figure it out, because you read that it was the bees knees on an Internet forum.
Think about the quirks of all these cameras. Ergonomically, menu-wise, and some things that you have to know only if you understand the full process of capturing and delivering that image. That only comes from experience, so put your money towards experience and skill, and the only thing more important than that is letting the content dictate everything. It'll make you a better storyteller and filmmaker.

I'm getting a 1DC AND a C100 mkii. Yay!!! Haha. Thanks guys for your help. I'm super pumped.
I didn't know this about the c100 mk2. A much better camera than the c300 for sure. SDI is an important thing and honestly you forgot to mention three other things that I love about it:
    1. the backlit LCD on the back that shows audio levels and all your important info.
    2. The control dials that are everyone on it.
    3. The headphone control on the side of the body (although I may map the two function buttons on the c100 m2 to be that.)
I think by having both the c100 m2 and a 1dc I'll have everything I need for the next year at least. 1dc for gimbal work and 4K for narrative content. C100 m2 for doc stuff and interviews where we need internal audio. Plus 1dc for Timelapse and professional stills!

I was looking at the price of the 4K... So good call. But the weight and cards aren't really an issue since he's considering a used C300. And I really don't see how turning some external ND filters could possibly be a deal breaker, but I do agree that the C100 mkii is the best choice.

That would be the absolute worst camera in this price range for the stated needs... no NDs, super high media and power costs, heavy, and he wouldn't even be able to get it up and running for less than $6K anyways.
It sounds like the C100II would be the best option, maybe with a recorder for slower shoots. C300 doesn't seem at all worth it with the C100II still being cheaper.
FS5 being a close second, or even first pick, depending on how important super slo-mo and 4K is to you. Or how useful the variable ND would be on your docs (I imagine in bright sunny Mexico, seamlessly moving from inside to outside without skipping a beat or going super-deep-DOF, would be pretty useful).

I'm really big on 4k, but truth is C100 Mark II has a 4k sensor that simply downsizes to 1080p in camera and has beautiful quality. C100 Mark II recently dropped as most people are aware and I think it's as of today one of the better options http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=c100+mark+II&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

FS5, unless you're desperately stuck with Canon. Will say, the C(x)00 series is a pretty good doco machine, but the FS5 will give you plenty more options including slowmo and 10-bit HD.

You bet! It gives you that color depth that is missing from normal s_log. I've always felt the Sony stuff I see online was missing that "thick" color that you get naturally from canon and Blackmagic.

    Where are all the surprises?
    The fireworks?
The blackmagic cameras that take 2 years to come out, then don't work as well as we thought they would in our minds?
The 6k global shutter CCD 5000 ISO camera for $2k?
Has NAB gone back to just being another techy dork-fest that introduces a bunch of side-handles or a recorder that can do 4k?
It hasn't been this boring since 2007, the year before the Red One was introduced, and later took 5 years to release in a useable form with a new sensor.

@DaveAltizer - Loving it as as well.  Seems like we are seeing the maximum quality 8 bit 4:2:0 can give with an 11bit equivalent log file.  It not only grades easy, but does not seem to fall apart like S-Log with standard settings.  I really appreciate you sharing this profile - Thank you!

Trying to have a discussion on facebook is not as easy as a forum such as this one.
The internet has really changed.  I don't go on vimeo really that much anymore - it is mostly facebook  And if I was younger, snapchat - god I hate facebook.
    Instagram bores me.
    I just read news sites.
I think you have a great spirit Andrew as others have said to promote creativity over pure tech stuff - also finding value in equipment from the past.
But, damn, if its wasting your time, move on man.  If the costs are too high, just ask people to donate via paypal if they use the site.
And yes, buying and selling gear constantly is hard, and it depreciates in value so quickly.
I still think there can be a lot of interesting articles on new lighting and lenses and older stuff as well to achieve results.
I'm about to post some 16mm style film I did with a panasonic sdx900 hooked up to a pix 240 -
yes the dslr revolution is over - that was an exciting and scary time and people turned to you and Mr Bloomy to see what they could do with the transition.
anyway, if its not fun for you anymore, just burn it down.  Hit that button like Batman does to blow up his factory and go shoot some film or direct or do other stuff.
Don't become a fossilized zombie like dvxuser or reduser.  God those forums are pathetic.

Who knows maybe it turns out great for low budget video, just hope that it isn't cropped in 4K mode and have decent DR.
Unfortunately it seems that the grip is required to shoot 30min of 4K.

I'd say a used C300 or a c100 mk II with external recorder. C300 with autofocus upgrade would be best but I think either one would be fine. There are both work horse cameras that will never let you down. Plus you can't beat that canon look.
