hansel reacted to Andrew Reid in Jinni Tech claims RED Compressed RAW patent filing is invalid
UPDATE: 2 provisional patents, one was filed April 11th 2007 and other in December 2007. Tick the clock backwards 12 months from December 2007 and RED camera was publicly discussed and on sale according to JT's video.
This doesn't seem to be his conjecture, rather historical, factual information from the internet, forums and Jannard interviews, where RED publicly display and demonstrate the technology later patented. Be it NAB 2006 (sales) or IBC 2006 (exhibit) or initial tests and the stuff from 2005... It's all out there.
In JT's video he points to RED putting up "sold out" signs at NAB 2006 for instance which is more than 1 year before one of the provisional patents the final one relied upon, and 2 years before the final patent was granted.
Of course I'm not a lawyer and would encourage anyone to look only at the facts before jumping to opinions, myself included, which is what I am doing! When it comes to the fine details of the law, I am making no claims until I know the facts. Yes JT could be wrong and RED could have a perfectly legal and valid patent, and that would be the end of the discussion.
It's for the FTC to decide... Also over the Made in USA claims.
I won't be taking a firm opinion either way yet.
But I do want people to keep on examining the facts and understanding the info, and we have free speech so are able to do that.
RED should apologise for me for the forced settlement agreement terms and the impact this had on my blog and free speech.
I want internal compressed RAW in many more of our cameras.
It's important RED's patents are checked and their behaviour held to account.
If they are invalid, it has huge consequences.
RED should be allowed to put their side of the story in response to this video and I invite them to do that here, not just play the distraction game with Komodo.

    Thanks mate, I haven't read it yet : -)
Did it now... The way a L.A. Court would extend their jurisdiction is beyond me.
To my knowledge, there's a lot of BS about the efficiency of their legal actions.
More a case of legal bullying than anything else to my view. You Andrew might be entitled to fire back for that with more success than them to speak it frankly. Defamation is a crime. To state that someone practices libel, if not proved, ends in slander very likely. To follow a civil action with much more predicted outcome.
The spell could turn against the sorcerer.
My jurist two cents : -)

When shooting 4k or 1080p on the P6k, does it crop the sensor, or downscale from the whole sensor?
I assume since they're ProRes only they downscale, but then what about 1080p120? Does that window the sensor?
If it does, what's the FOV compared to the P4k shooting 1080p120?

I do not want to participate but a specific someone is playing us like a fiddle for 15 pages now. Drags people into the nonsense abyss and single handedly destroyed the P6K thread for everyone that is trying to learn anything at all about this camera. Also, is the individual attacking most people on the smaller amount of time I have ever seen here.
Stop feeding him and please try to not completely loose control of the thread, any thread.

I wasn't saying that you are watching with image smoothing on, I was just trying to illustrate how film motion DOES have "stutter" (as you called it) and the proof is that TV's try to smooth out this stutter which is not how the film maker intended. If Films were perfectly smooth "as silk" as you say, there wouldn't be this issue would there?
I don't know why you are getting so angry about this?
And yes, I often watch YouTube on my TV.....is there a problem with that?

I’ve returned or sold many cameras in the past few years and have kept my micro the entire time. I agree with the quirks, but for me they are solvable. For example only shoot raw and manual focus lenses, so I have no need to ever even go into the menus - besides maybe to format a card once in awhile. So the menu buttons don’t bother me. I also have the NPF adapter, so battery life is great. So the micro is more compact, battery life is better, it has in my opinion the better raw codec, and a better filmic quality to it and also records to regular SD cards. Yet, nobody talks about it because of the way blackmagic promoted it as almost a drone only/go pro-ish brain. When in reality it’s an amazing filmic camera perfect for rigging. It’s truly one of the most insanely under-appreciated hidden gems in the consumer/prosumer film/video industry. Also, with resolve superscale - you can upscale it to 4k with amazing results.
    @Skip77
120hz only makes it look worse to me. It’s not the motion cadence being bad. Most starting out in the past few years won’t tell a difference. For us old timers, the motion cadence we are speaking of gives a bit more cinematic feel to it. For example the micros motion cadence seems slower, with more natural blur, which I find more pleasing.

Not to get too off topic but you mentioned the blackmagic micro cinema camera.   Everytime I use it I think I should just throw all my other cameras (z6, xt3, etc) in the trash.  For me too it has the best look to it by far.  But, you really have to work to use that camera with all of it's quirks.  Folks say you can soften modern cameras in post, but I've never seen good examples of that to match something like the bmmcc.
I wish BM or another co. would just package that same sensor into a newer body with all the ergonomics and battery life of a modern cam.

Here are my early impressions of the pocket 6k

    - My camera came with scuffs and scratches all over the body. It looked like it has been used for months. Went on FB and saw several people complaining and posting pictures of very bad scratches and even dents all over the body. Check out the official Facebook group to see more info on this.

    - Vmount or some other solution is needed. I fall into the prefer pocket full of batteries category, as I like to keep it compact. But I am not even sure I made it 15 minutes before it died with an official canon batter (newest version). It was really bad. I need to do more tests on this. I was shooting 6k braw for what it’s worth

    - Motion cadence and overall look still doesn’t really do it for me. It looks fantastic, but it doesn’t have the magic older blackmagic sensors had. Maybe it’s the resolution bump and it’s just the way it is with these modern sensors. So far, nothing in the consumer/prosumer price range beats my blackmagic micro cinema camera as far as motion cadence and nailing the filmic look with ease. I feel cameras now days nail the specs on paper, but they lack feel/organic quality/smooth motion cadence, etc. Often people get up and arms when the word “cinematic” is brought up. Yes you can make cinematic footage with the pocket 6 or prob any camera for that matter. Yes lighting impacts it and proper grade does as well. And yes it’s a term that is overused and misused. But I think their is definitely an organic feel missing from these often sterile modern sensors. Sure you can throw a pro-mist filter on it, some vintage glass, and massage it to look great. The sensor kind of reminds me of my old Red Raven. Which isn’t really a bad thing (or great). Just has a slightly similar look and feel to it.
    - Having a dedicated ef Mount is wonderful. Much better not dealing with an adapter.
TL;DR Overall, it’s a great camera and just like the pocket 4k - it’s great when rigged up. Battery life seems much worse than the 4k when using canon batteries - but I need to do more testing. Overall look and feel is sharp and impressive, but lacks an organic quality which can be attributed by slightly video-esque motion cadence, modern sensor, and higher resolution.

To be honest, I did not see the P6K coming. I received mine yesterday and haven't even had time to open the box yet. I am curious about using it along side the P4Ks with and without boosters.
But after seeing the P6K, you *know* there is a P8K coming just as soon as BM can get a sensor (full frame?) that has the appropriate specs and makes the ~3500 price point. They already have the EF mount and there should be enough room in the body for the larger sensor. I bet the P8K is out inside 15 months at $3495. What do you guys think?
Also, I got a huge kick out of the fact that Blackmagic had it in stock the DAY it was released at the major dealers. I got mine from B&H. That will teach us to talk smack about Blackmagic's legendary lack of timeliness (or not.... )

    1) technically BMPCC 4k with an XL Speedbooster will give you a "larger sensor" than the BMPCC 6k....but with LucAdapter Magicbooster....you can make the BMPCC 6k FULL FRAME potentially!
    2) no workflow isn't ready yet. Resolve is still super buggy cause its in beta and 6k didn't work well on my machine. I am not going to mess with it till it gets better.
    3)low light is great!
    4) 4k ProRes uses the full sensor

Ask me any questions you have. Disclaimer: I wasn’t able to get 6k raw to work and need to spend some time getting it in Resolve. For now... here is a first look and impression video with some footage. Some 6k raw was able to be transcoded to 1080p... but that’s it. Seriously been a pain in the neck but it is what it is....

hansel reacted to DBounce in 6K RAW is over-rated. Here's why...
I'm not sure what you are talking about? Are you saying AF is not "Pro"? Honestly I could care less what is "Pro"... I use a gimbal and motion controllers and often times control multiple cameras at once.  AF is a needed feature for these situations. I'm not talking about elaborate focus pulling... I'm taking about locking onto a subject and keeping it in focus. The primary reasons I do not buy Reds and Arri are: size, weight, lack of AF and convenience. If that changes I might have to rethink things.
This new "pocket" camera is simply too large and bulky to be the kind of camera I would carry day to day.  It's size and bulk relegate it to planned shoots. The kind of shoots my C200 is used for. The only thing this camera has going for it imo is price. But honestly, price is not a dominant factor in my purchasing decision. The more important factor for me is convenience of use... because if it is not convenient to use,  well... I don't use it.

hansel reacted to Mattias Burling in Hey Nikon - Where's the Z6 ProRes RAW Update?
To create and export it yes, but not to work with it. Atomos and the others aren't putting Prores in their machines just for Apple users.
So on a PC (at least the once I've used) I just import and edit Prores like I would on a Mac. When its time to export I use DNxHD or similar that a PC can create.
Unless the project is fine with h.264.
PS. To install Prores on to a PC I remember installing and uninstalling Quicktime Player. Might not be needed today. EDIT: wasn't needed when testing it just now.
EDIT: Just tested a clip from a BMPCC4K on my Office PC at work. A real piece of HP-junk only used for Words and Excell with Premiere installed just in case. It imported instantly and flowed smoothly.
