I am lost now, my friend : ) Is the new firmware update safe then? I am in the market to commit the sacrilege to probably buy one... I'm sorry I can't resist with an effective mod on the corner ; ) The hybrid shooter inside me begs for it! LOL

    8K / 4K 120fps / IBIS / AF combo is too much... to resist quiet! : D

Hahaha. I was lost too. I sent you a PM about it. Something was going on with the Sanddisk card I was using. The R5 gave some read errors a couple times, I reformatted, and it would work on and off but it was a really old card. I switched back to my Prograde cards and everything was fine. I don't know honestly will test more to solidify all this.

Not sure what witchery is going on now but if you want to keep your battery pull abilities Hold off on updating.  It seemed to work when I tried  a few times earlier, but after using the R5 throughout the day trying different modes... dont update, and if you did... MY BAD.

It works... Not sure what was going on. I needed to confirm a few more times. Anyone that updated can follow this up to echo but seems like its ok.

Battery pull thermal timer workaround still works.

  4. I updated the firmware this morning then repeated old external test.

Recorded 4K HQ externally for over an hour with no card in camera.

After 1hr 16 minutes passed I stopped the external recording, and inserted CFexpress card.

Once the R5 booted back up the counter said 20 minutes. Showed 25 minutes after shut down for less than 5 minutes.

So it seems the external recording is still good.

Apparently a firmware update is coming tomorrow.

Who here  with an R5 is gonna be the first to update?

After all this, I'm feeling like I may need to move slow with R5 firmware updates.

No formal response, but just the firmware update that they mentioned before we call came to know what we know now. 🧐

They might try to low key close some loose ends.

Very interesting that it resets the timer.  Still rather curious if there's any potential for damaging the sensor though.  Like if you do this for a full day do you start to "see things".  Not really worried about the CPU or even media bay in this case.

Sucks either way.  Sounds like some sort of firmware update is coming might have some sort of rate increase, but I think I'd like to know more about if they are trying to protect the sensor itself or if it's actually just crippled.

Plus side, images are nice off of it.  I'm certain with all of this though an actively cooled 8K cinema camera will be coming to the Canon C series lineup outside of the Japan only one they currently have.

In ProAv's Q & A video, Mehdia Mehtal spoke about unlimited recording externally as long as camera was powered by the mains. She said you wouldn't have to worry about limits, externally but emphasized mains power. She also spoke vaguely about Canon lifting time limits at some point.

EXIF data on the camera after recording hour straight in 104 degree Texas heat ( direct sunlight ) didnt go higher than 65 C, and after instantly switching to internal recording the camera acted as if it hadn't even been powered on prior with full times available in all desired modes. Camera was very hot to the touch as well. It also seemed to cool down very quickly as EXIF data showed it was at 30 C within 14 minutes.

As I've replied on YouTube – all modes "overheat"! It's just that the message about it is displayed only when switching to 8K / 4K HQ / slow motion.

Meaning: you can be sitting in the menus, or taking a couple of stills for an hour. As soon as you switch to video – camera will let you know it was "overheating" all this time and can no longer film. Even power off.

It puzzles me why won't Canon do a hybrid camera for all of us to eventually spend millions on RF glass?

I actually have the R5 and a set of RF lenses, so I can personally confirm the behavior of the cameras overheat protection protocol is questionable. I've seen it throw the warning at idle, and in the menus. I've used it with the ninja V for over an hour continuously and after it became really HOT, switched over to recording internally in HQ modes with full time allowance as if the camera had never been turned on prior to internal recording.

It puzzles us all but I'm certainly not going to buy a C300 mk iii or a RF cine camera in an attempt to fulfill the void in what they sold as the R5.

Thinking about it, I'd go as far as to say that he's talking in such cautionary terms about the video features as though he were describing them as being some sort of "use at your own risk" modification like Magic Lantern rather than an actual finished, manufactured, retail product from a world leading brand.

    It is utterly, utterly weird.

    Very weird...

Speaking on the external recording, He actually says  'we don't know if it has potential to damage your camera, and please do keep that in mind'

I guess if Canon doesn't speak to it, the shops have to say something to their customers.

Likewise, over the years bought lots of gear from Pro AV, one of the better suppliers. But him ending with 'for lots of people looking for a hybrid this is one of the best options' is a pretty damning thing to say with a straight face.

'People that tend to do more stills than video work, but still do quite a bit of video work, this is going to be great'.  another quote that stood out...  the problem with these kind of statements is, its not what Canon said the camera would be! I remember DPreview, and Canonrumors were full of frustrated photographers feeling left out because all Canon was promoting on this camera was the video specs of this so-called hybrid.

I like ProAV as a company to buy from and their videos about products are hype free and informative.

However, I think that video is a misstep by them and there are some presumptions in there from them about how you could use it that won't leave them with a leg to stand on when people want to return them.

I'm utterly baffled why they would make a video about something with that many caveats in it without closing with "and of course we won't be taking any orders for these until all of these issues are at the very least clarified by Canon".

I agree, I usually like their videos... but you pinpointed my reasoning for posting this video here.
