Colorgraded the Models-footage from vimeo done by @John Brawley in ACES colorspace (Rec709 Idt) just using curves and log tools.
Got rid of the harshness using blur and nodes qualifying brighter skintones with even more filtering. Used curves to compress highlights. Even added NR and grain. Looks way smoother now - download the ProRes 4K file to see for yourselves.

    Wonder what you guys think
Looks good to me at least lol
BTW, I think the Balloon clip looks very much shows the Blackmagic signature look.
Reminds me a lot of my old BMCC 2.5k, just with more detail and way less aliasing and moire. Stunning!

Shot this last weekend. Mostly in to 150 fps. Some shots were overexposed, but you get the idea, it was very sunny and hot.
Used a DEC lens regain, Sigma 18-35 and Canon 85mm, shot mostly handheld with stabiliser on. Two shots are twixtored.
Straight from the camera the Rec709 is awesome, period. I added an osiris lut to pop some colors.

You may like to see these pics of the new Fujinon 50-135mm Cabrio in E Mount - yes E mount !! - WHY OH WHY  !!!!
This lens is causing quite a stir since it was announced , Fujinons legendary Cabrio quality in an affordable lens - Mathew Ducclos is going to mod it and hack an inch off the back and add a Canon mount - now that is interesting now its usable by the masses !
I did speak with Tadashi Sasaki of Fujinon who said they MAY offer this lens in Micro 4/3 as it is possible to make without a huge retool - Now this lens with a GH5 would be a killer indie feature film makers dream !

Also the SLR Magic 8mm was at the show on the Holden stand on a GH5 - see pics ....approx £300 - available now

Jonathan Lee reacted to jcs in Canon 1DX-II vs. 1DC - Which one would you buy?
Yes, the 1DX II's touch screen PDAF is very useful. The tracking is decent, though appears to use some form of feature/corner tracking such that when the object changes significantly, it completely loses track of the object. For example, I was filming a show dog walking on hind legs and spinning. After locking track on his face, when he fell down, the track was completely lost and focus immediately went to the background. This ruins the shot. Instead, the algorithm should default to tracking near the last track at the same spatial depth (the dog was still in focus- it should have stayed and picked up a new track based on the pixels already in focus). I write image processing algorithms for my day job, and I'm surprised they didn't implement it the right way.
We also use the C300 II, and I'm finding the 1DX II more useful for location shoots as it's much smaller and lighter than the C300 II (fully rigged with top and side handles). In 4K, the 1DX II is also a 1.33 crop vs 1.5 for the C300 II (1DX II is FF in 1080p). While the C300 II has Canon Log 2, which produces ARRI-like highlight handling (and along with other settings has similar colors so ARRI 3D LUTs can be used etc.), it cannot do touch-screen AF as with the 1DX II. However, it can do WIFI device touch AF with the WFT-E6A (the 1DX II requires the newer WFT-E8).
One nice thing about the C300 II is the 1080p is excellent, and the 50Mbps IPB is not only very small, but still looks great for low-camera motion shots. The 1DX II's 30Mbps 1080p is good, but not really 1080p (perhaps someone will do resolution tests) and has aliasing and Moire (note the C300 II has aliasing and Moire on very fine detail fabrics, for example. Something else to look forward to improvement for the next cameras (capturing at 8K (or more) and filtered down-sampling to reduce and/or eliminate aliasing).
In summary, the C300 II is a superior camera to the 1DC in every way (except perhaps size/stealth and crop factor), and we find the 1DX II to be a superior camera than the C300 II for certain types of shoots. The 1DC is still an amazing camera, however the 1DX II is superior in real-world shooting (remember shooting -1EV + using a log-like profile (Cinestyle or your own) + HTP gets you the same level of highlight detail as the 1DC in CLog (see earlier post in this thread showing the results in actual video with the 1DC). PDAF is indeed a massive help for focus, but still needs work (could be improved via firmware, though Canon doesn't do firmware updates very often). For the show dog example, manual focusing with a single operator (handheld) is nearly impossible as both zoom and focus must be done at the same time (with a balanced shoulder rig and lots of practice it should be possible, however will never be as good as a computer (when the software works properly ;)).

    Hi guys,
I have been using the A7R II and the RX100 IV for travel in Cuba, check my video if you want to see the result.
So far I loved the RX100 for the slowmo (I filmed everything in 120fps with it) and the A7R II was good too. The IBIS is not great but better than nothing especially when you dont have an IS lens.
No overheating problem (this is mostly a problem for people who record long times). The biggest problem that made me sell it is ergonomics (body and menus, ..). It is atrocious.
Also I am very disappointed with the AF. Actually my 2 biggest challenges during my trip for video were focus and ergonomics shits of the A7R. Having to set everything all the time was a pain, and the AF was not satisfying. I had no time for manual focus for the type of shots I did so missed a lot of shots because of this. I did focus manually 25% of the time though but it was a pain too.
The only solution for me is DPAF from Canon or A6300 AF (I did not try it).
Rolling shutter is insane on the A7R.
I used the 60p FHD mode sometimes and also the FF mode instead of crop mode sometimes without noticing a big difference.
I used a Pilotfly H1+ that was ok. Used it only for the RX100.

The good thing is the combo RX100/gimbal 120fps and the A7R II for DoF shots and 4k.

Who has used this combo successfully?
What do you think about the video? I feel horrible about how Vimeo destroyed it, the original file is SO clean on my screen... But I guess we are all in the same basket here.

Hey Mattias, do you still have your Nikon D750?
I'd love to see a comparison between the D750 and the 5D III. Nikon Flat versus 5D III RAW. Does that massive leap in bitrate grant you a huge advantage in the final image?

Put some Raw DNGs in the footage download thread so people that are interested can play around.
I shot them to test and stretch the DR.
One ETTR. one with a few highlights blown and one with a lot of them blown.
This image is from the last one. The highlight recovery brought back most of the window.

Well pretty much everything I talked about in the video applies to the Cinema Camera, but there IS one thing...

I JUST got this cage - showed up in the mail yesterday. And I think it's going to be GREAT. - $237.
It has a lot of similarities to the Movcam BMPCC cage - like the nice big base so the thing won't tip over when you set it down etc..
It looked like overkill to me at first but the price was great and I've had decent luck with "the cine city" before so I ordered it.
Now I can tell I'm going to use this without the left handle - that's just unnecessary for most setups, but I like the right handle with the record trigger for sure.
It's not made as flawlessly as the Movcam but it's definitely good. The included rods are cheaply painted and I already scratched them, but I'll be replacing the bottom rods with 40cm Fotasy rods anyway. the finish on the rest of it is better than on the rods. Some of the rigging it comes with I probably won't ever use - but it's nice to have it all included in the price anyway. You never know what you'l need...

This is a bunch of basic information about affordable camera support gear.
A lot of people who are new to all this Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera stuff (or DSLR sized cameras), and folks who don't have much money to spend have been asking me about all this lately. I don't have a lot of time to do gear reviews, so I decided to try to cram as much information as I could into this one video hoping to answer as many questions as I can all in one place.
    Items covered in this video:
    BMPCC Cages
    Rail Systems
    Shoulder Rigs
    External Batteries
    Follow Focus Devices
    Matte Boxes
    Cats and Dogs Living Together
    Tripods
    Jibs
    Gimbal
    Carry Case
*Note: The "one size fits all" cage I show here costs $149. I forgot to mention that.

    Movcam BMPCC Cage  - $323
    Fotga Follow Focus - $170
Follow Focus Speed Crank - $13

Ive been getting a lot of questions about the Red One. Many remind me of when the BMCC was new and people seemed to think it was more difficult than regular cameras and that you could only shoot with thousands of accessories.
Back then I did a quick beginners guide on what you needed and how to set it up for a basic shot.
So for fun I did a similar thing for the R1, even though I bet not even 1/100 is interested compared to the Blackmagic.
Again, this is just on how to get it running and produce an image, not how to make good looking videos

Im also still amazed at how enjoyable Redcode is to work with.

With a SmallHD monitor with Sidefinder mounted to the side of a BMMCC, you could end up with a form factor similar to a Director's Viewfinder perhaps?
