There have been some updates after that version.

3x3 Grid (thick lines): with camera-ui not freezing (turn on/off from the menu)
note: overlay.png is still available as an option, just add your file and it will work (but the rest of the ui will freeze until you unload), if you want to use the non-freezing 3x3, simply remove the overlay.png from your sdcard.

    2.35 filmgate: with camera-ui not freezing ( turn on/off with EV+OK)
note: if you are on NX1 you need to sacrifice another shortcut to use this one,
and simply rename EV_OK.sh to the one you like to use, before installing.
note2: it is possible to adjust the filmgate, just add the desired proportion as a parameter,
but you need to modify the bash command.
    ex (for 16/9): /opt/usr/nx-ks/onscreen_235 1.77

    here you go:

    v2.79
    added: Custom overlay
    - start from ( settings> overlay ). It loads your own custom overlay from the root directory of the sdcard ( sdcard/overlay.png ). Once activated the touchscreen will not work, and histogram will be "frozen" until you deactivate it ( reminder: Ev+Ev/Ok to start the menu for nx500/nx1)

note that the preview of the playback will not work, however press "ok" for the video playback to start, and the recorded video with the overlay on top will show.

you can make any overlay you like, as 720x480 transparent PNG  (replace the overlay.png with it)

Its better tho shoot at UHD or 4K and deliver in 1080p than shoot in 1080p when you can for quality reasons.  ISO performance is better.  Colors are slightly better.  Image is more detailed.

Can we get some chart tests with this focal reducer? Sharpness across all parts of the frame need to be accounted for. Also what about lens coating? Does this flare in direct light? Can you try it with wider and longer lenses.  I know the Metabones lenses have their focal length limits in particular with the Sony e mount adapters.

could the following be used on the NX1?

    From here: http://x265.readthedocs.org/en/default/cli.html

    --nr-intra <integer>, --nr-inter <integer>
Noise reduction - an adaptive deadzone applied after DCT (subtracting from DCT coefficients), before quantization. It does no pixel-level filtering, doesn’t cross DCT block boundaries, has no overlap, The higher the strength value parameter, the more aggressively it will reduce noise.
Enabling noise reduction will make outputs diverge between different numbers of frame threads. Outputs will be deterministic but the outputs of -F2 will no longer match the outputs of -F3, etc.
Values: any value in range of 0 to 2000. Default 0 (disabled).

There's an option in the menu turn NR off for photos. Wouldn't that be a starting point to figure out how to do it for video?

Since 120fps doesn't play nice with the bitrate hack has anyone tried PAL 100fps?  I feel like that should work without issue since the hack brings the 120fps recordings down to 106fps.

Minor update, still doing what Im doing, still digging and documenting what changes Im finding in the firmware, have started to explore with telnet and the camera. Its looking good. Have a few ideas on how it utilizes firmware updates but nothing solid yet. But I like how both stages are progressing. Although i wish I had more to show haha but dumping c isnt going to have a point! I should have a major update in a few days though!

Chant said he might look into increasing resolution and maybe bitrate for the MJPEG, honestly I think the focus should be more on the MJPEG rather than the HEVC which is just painful to work with already and any higher bitrate will make it even more painful to work with than it already is, so instead of having a thorn in our bums, MJPEG would be the better pick here for easy editing.

Even before this hack, the shadows could be brought up quite a bit. Even in higher contrast situations than this. When you set the PP levels to 16-235 it actually shows, that the contrast here it no so harsh.
What I'm really interested in is testing these new things against the old things in the same conditions.

NX1 feels like the better bang for your buck unless you shoot a lot of nightclub stuff or wedding receptions.  Or you could simply invest in faster glass.
